CEO Rick Lofgren Coming to Celebrating 40 Years of Service! On Tuesday, May 13, Rose DDC May 20 for Town Hall Dover, Food & Nutrition Services, celebrated 40 years of service with Daniel Drake Center! In 1974, Rose was looking for work and her neighbor suggested that she apply at Drake Center. Rose

started in Environmental Services and eventually became an EVS Supervisor. In 1995, Rose started in Food & Nutrition Services and has been there ever since. When asked what is one thing that stands out “from back in the day,” Rose said “herself.” Turns out she was a patient here for three weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. In August, she will be 20 years cancer free. Her doctor said that she would never walk again. With the help of her therapists and her son literally pushing her out of her wheelchair (tough love), she proved her Welcome New Associates doctor wrong. Kara Brown, Admitting What has kept her here for 40 years? Rose said, “the people.” Jeanine Cox, Case Management Quiana Dixon, Christ LTAC Not only did she celebrate 40 years at DDC, but on May 23, Rose Paul Foster, EVS and her husband, Jeffrey, have been married 50 years! Rose and Stephanie Holimon, EVS Jeffrey have four children, three sons and one daughter, and four Robin Hughes, Lab grandsons. Yvette McFarlane, Cardiac Rehab Milestones are big in May for Rose and we wish her many more Sarah Mellie, LTAC 4 North happy, healthy years! When someone asked, “when are you Kelly Moore, Occupational Therapy leaving?” Rose replied, “Never! As long as I can walk in here.” Palak Patel, LTAC 3 North Shonda Simmons, Float Pool Congratulations Rose! Evian Taylor-Benton, Medical Records

DAISY Award On Tuesday, May 13, the following nurses received the DAISY Award to honor the super-human work nurses do for patients and families every day in hospitals around the country: Loida Haysbert, LPN, BWP; Denise Cornist, LPN, 2S; and Janna Campbell, RN, 4N. Each winner received a DAISY Award recipient pin, a Healer’s Touch hand carved statue and an award certificate proclaiming “Extraordinary Nurse.” The DAISY foundation was formed in January 2000 by the family of Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of complications from an immune disease. His family was so impressed by nursing care he received during his illness that they were inspired to form the foundation. Congratulations to all nominees: Janna Campbell, RN, 4N; Denise Cornist, LPN, 2S; Liz Dietrich, RN, 3N; April Green, MSN, RN, Educator; Loida Haysbert, LPN, BWP; Misty Lewis, LPN, BWP; Melanie Milton, LPN, BWP; Jamie Phillips, RN, 3S. The following are the DAISY award winners nominations: Loida’s nomination: • “She is always busy but will drop whatever she is doing to help a person.” • “She brought brightly colored scarves, checked in frequently and was her rock for a young patient dying with cancer.” • “Always willing to jump in and get it done.” • “She handles problems herself and doesn’t pass the buck.” Denise’s nomination: • “Ms. Cornist was a great asset in the ODH survey…and was very professional.” • “I have always admired her work ethic.” • “She takes ownership of the wounds on the unit while completing her own assignments.” • “She is always on top of her patients.” Janna’s nomination: “Janna is a sweet person with a big heart who cares a lot about her patients. She is always kind and maintains a positive attitude when working with patients, families and staff!” Thank you all for your RITE Core Values and the hard work that you perform day in and day out! The Rededication Ceremony The Rededication Ceremony was planned by Nursing Leadership as Pictured, DAISY Award Winner, Janna Campbell the finale to National Nurses Week. May 12 is the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birthday. It was a tribute to the chosen profession to rededicate Nurses to nursing. Each unit had an enlarged, color Nightingale Pledge which nurses autographed. These were displayed in the courtyard during the candlelight ceremony. Nurses shared their calling to become nurses through their stories, they lit each other’s candles to celebrate their commitment and altogether, as one voice, they pledged themselves to continue to pursue their dedication to their patients and nursing. Rick Sturgeon, Clinical Manager, 3 North, said “One of our newest nurses, Holly Viox, was able to attend this inspiring event. It was a really nice start to her new career as an RN here at Daniel Drake. I believe it is just one more way that nursing leadership is striving to elevate nursing in our facility.” What’s Up Page 2 Friday, May 16, 2014 Celebrating Hospital Week May 11-17 On Friday, May 16, the weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of associates when rain forced Hospital Week festivities to move indoors. Their behaviors violate our RITE Values, but all too often are accepted as “normal.” Failure to identify and intervene in these behaviors, leads to a culture of fear and intimidation. What to do? For HCWs to find joy in the workplace, the development of an environment of mutual respect is critical. In health care today, teamwork is essential for safe practice. Teamwork is impossible in the absence of mutual respect. To find joy in our daily work, HCWs need an environment where they are treated with dignity and respect by everyone, where they have the tools and equipment to make a contribution to the team and the HCW is recognized and thanked for what they do.
