Littles August 2014 CHARACTERISTICS OF ONLINE MUSIC COURSES: A SURVEY OF MUSIC FACULTY ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of music faculty toward course suitability for online delivery, the pedagogical practices of online music faculty, and the current predominate characteristics of online music courses. A review of the literature found no studies that surveyed music faculty to find the current characteristics of online music courses. A researcher-designed survey was completed by participants (N = 230) from 160 randomly selected institutions accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The majority of participants were from large universities (10,000 or more students) and did not have previous experience teaching music online. Most universities offering undergraduate and graduate courses online have done so for 4 or fewer years. Music history, music appreciation, and religious studies in music were the most commonly offered online undergraduate courses, and music education, music research, and music technology were the most common graduate courses. -

Black US Army bands and their bandmasters in World War I Peter M. Lefferts This essay sketches the story of the bands and bandmasters of the twenty seven new black army regiments which served in the U.S. Army in World War I. They underwent rapid mobilization and demobilization over 1917-1919, and were for the most part unconnected by personnel or traditions to the long-established bands of the four black regular U.S. Army regiments that preceded them and continued to serve after them. Pressed to find sufficient numbers of willing and able black band leaders, the army turned to schools and the entertainment industry for the necessary talent. -

Introduction Ornithologists have been exploring the possibilities and the methodology of tape- recording and archiving animal sounds for many decades. Primatologists, however, have only recently become aware that tape-recordings of primate sound may be just as valuable as traditional scientific specimens such as skins or skeletons, and should be preserved for posterity. Audio recordings should be fully documented, archived and curated to ensure proper care and accessibility. As natural populations disappear, sound archives will become increasingly important. This is an introductory text on how to tape-record primate vocalisations. It provides some information on the advantages and disadvantages of various types of equipment, and gives some tips for better recordings of primate vocalizations, both in the field and in the zoo. Ornithologists studying bird sound have to deal with very similar problems, and their introductory texts are recommended for further study (e.g. Budney & Grotke 1997; © Thomas Geissmann Geissmann: How to Tape-Record Primate Vocalisations 2 Kroodsman et al. 1996). For further information see also the websites listed at the end of this article. As a rule, prices for sound equipment go up over the years. Prices for equipment discussed below are in US$ and should only be used as very rough estimates. -

Introduction to Global Music the Center for European
Introduction to Global Music The Center for European Studies (CES) and other Area Studies Centers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are collaborating with the student-run radio station WXYC in the production of the Global Music Show. This monthly hour-long program features music from a particular area of the world combined with commentary by guest scholars, who discuss the music played in the context of the culture and history of the region that produced it. To support cultural learning, CES has created student listening guides, pre- and post-listening discussion questions, and resource links for each of their Global Music programs. The programs run about one hour, and so listening and discussion would work well for block schedule classes. If your class runs the traditional hour length, you can have the class listen over two periods, and then discuss. Alternatively, you can assign the listening for homework, and hold the discussion during class time. Music can teach us much about a culture that never appears in a textbook. Use these programs and teaching resources to connect your students with European cultures in a dynamic, new way. Encourage students to continue their exploration of Europe through music.
