PREFACE The past two decades have witnessed a revival of interest in Coventry Patmore, whom the world has come to know as 11 the poet of nuptial love." In 1921 Frederick Page collected and published a large uumber of Patmore's latest essays under the title of Courage~ Politics and other Essgys, while Osbert Burdett published a microscopic examination of the Patmorean theme under the title The Idea of Patmore. The numerous articles commemorating the centenary of Patmore's birth were followed in 1924 by a biography of his daughter Emily, a religious of the Holy Child Jesus, whose life is a kind of commentary on the odes of ~ Unknown ~· Frederick Page's study of Patmore's poetry appeared in 1933. -

“She Left the Window”: Challenging Domestic Ethos in Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White Rachael Zeleny Abstract: Historically, literary critics have considered Wilkie Collins’s Woman in White as yet another example of a novel that tentatively endorses alternate ver- sions of acceptable femininity but ultimately confines women within the traditional- ly confines of domesticity by the novel’s close. To draw such a conclusion, however, would be to overlook Collins’s intertextual relationship with artists and paintings of this time. By employing the lens of visual rhetoric, a reader has a better under- standing of how Collins uses Marian Halcombe’s proximity to windows throughout the novel as a means for challenging domestic ethos to the very last page. In short, she is an angel and I am—Try some of that marmalade, Mr. Hartright and finish the sentence, in the name of female propriety, for yourself “ — Marian Halcombe, The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins Wilkie Collins’s sensation novel The Woman in White (1859) was a runaway bestseller. As demonstrated by the quotation above, Marian Halcombe cannot be located within the restrictive categories of Anglo femininity that circulated in mid-nineteenth-century Britain. Marian’s identity crisis rings true consider- ing the popularity of a singular paradigm of middle-class femininity, the Angel in the House, as coined by Coventry Patmore in his 1854 narrative poem of that title. -

Although rhyme has come to be regarded as an unsophisticated sound effect, for Victorians it provoked urgent questions about the relationship between past and present, the importance of national and ethnic identity, and even the nature of human experience. In nineteenth-century literary historical prose, the advent of rhyme signaled the beginning of the modern European literary tradition and, by extension, the emergence of modern subjectivity. Its origins were consequently a matter of passionate dispute. Through a range of formal techniques from stanzaic patterning to assonance to blank verse, poets entered live debates about rhyme: whether it began in the East or West, how it moved into English literature, whether it signified spiritual achievement or cultural decline, and how it registered in the mind and body. Drawing on a rich archive of prose written and read by Victorian poets but largely neglected now, I show that nineteenth- century conceptions of literary history were not identical with our own. -

Kline, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Professor David Riede, Adviser Approved by Professor Clare Simmons _______________________ Professor Amanpal Garcha Adviser Graduate Program in English ABSTRACT Educated Speech: Victorian Philology and the Literary Languages of Matthew Arnold and Arthur Hugh Clough argues that Matthew Arnold’s and Arthur Hugh Clough’s poetry and its political and social resonances can be fruitfully illuminated by focusing on the extended encounter between the language of their poems and Victorian philology—the nineteenth-century discourse that brought together issues of language, history, class, culture, and nationalism. This dissertation explores the ways that Clough’s and Arnold’s understanding of their medium was shaped by a sustained engagement with this complex and heterogeneous cluster of linguistic ideas including the persistence of eighteenth-century concepts of language, Romantic philology, and the emergence of historicist/comparativist orientations to language that all co-exist during the Victorian period. I argue that Arnold’s and Clough’s evolving understanding of language emerges from the ways in which Victorian philological insights are mediated through the Victorian educational establishment, and subsequently has such a mediated understanding is translated into specific and significant aesthetic features in their poetry such as the use of slang or the deployment of the simile. Further, because both Clough and Arnold subscribed to the central creed of Victorian philology—that language indexed cultural health—, the ii grounding of such aesthetic and formal qualities of the poems in this discourse allows us to recover or foreground additional aspects of the political and cultural resonances of Arnold’s and Clough’s poetry. -

Pre-Raphaelite Emblematics in the Germ
Chapter 2 “Thoughts towards Nature”: Pre-Raphaelite Emblematics in The Germ Emblematic structures, themes, and references pervade the Pre-Raphaelites’ short-lived inaugural magazine, The Germ, but the particular uses contributors made of these measures reveal a range of attitudes towards the groundedness and hence the reliability of signs. The fact that the emblem embodies both a tacit recognition of the failure of language and an attempt to redeem it makes it especially interesting as a site on which a variety of approaches to poetic rep- resentation may be seen to play out: in all its diverse forms, the emblem offers a paradigm for the practices of signification and interpretation that proposes to stabilize language in the face of representational and even cosmological doubt. By looking closely at selected criticism and poems from The Germ, this chapter will argue that reading Pre-Raphaelite literature with an awareness of its emblematic structures shows us how its poetics and verbal-visual aesthet- ics respond to ontological and representational uncertainty. As the previous chapter established, conceived on the one hand as a didactic tool in which natural objects stand in for rhetorical or spiritual truths, and on the other as a hybrid verbal-visual language that promises to supply the communicative deficiencies of both image and text, emblems are a self-conscious attempt to establish a system of signs with inherent, necessary, and stable meanings. For the Pre-Raphaelites at this early stage, the emblem is a representational tool that unites the promise of “truth to nature” – that Ruskinian ideal of an unme- diated presentation of the world – with a self-aware and sophisticated metapo- etics that reflects on the very nature of these encoding and decoding processes themselves. -

Reconsidering the Victorian Angel in the Light of Butler’s Concept of Performativity as a Key Indicator of Gender Identity Construction Dr. Monia Chouari University of Sousse, Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences of Sousse, Department of English, Sousse, Tunisia Abstract Amid the fast changes and repercussions of the French and Industrial Revolutions, women's critical status in the British transitory period stimulated the Victorian elite, such as Elizabeth Gaskell, to raise the complex issue of femininity and womanhood in her writings. Given the predominant concept of the woman as an angel, this study sets forth to examine the mechanisms of the building-up of women characters wrestling with the Victorian ideal of the angel that has been established by theorists of domestic ideology, namely the leading figures, Coventry Patmore John Ruskin. Gaskell’s discourse represents an attempt to transcend the established norms of traditional femininity in contradiction with masculinity. This argument is corroborated through three analytical angles. While the first section presents the socio- cultural background of women as angels, the second one analyses the female characters' performance within the theoretical framework of Butler's concept of “performativity” through which gender identity is ‘enacted,’ and the third section examines the role of the language in the selected novels, namely Mary Barton and North and South, to validate the subversive discourse towards founding the New Woman's identity.
