Download Press Release Joan Doerr Views from a Sanctuary 8 May – 2 June 2021 &Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Views from a Sanctuary. This is Joan Doerr’s first solo show with the &Gallery and features a new body of work painted during the past year. “Abstraction is a reflection of one’s emotions, of how one sees the world” Influenced by artists such as Cy Twombly and Prunella Clough, her work is characterised by gestural brushstrokes, mark making and spontaneity. Joan’s bold, expressive paintings are inspired by the shapes, textures and colours observed in the everyday and derived from her immediate surroundings. She works intuitively and instinctively, often applying and removing layers of paint and drawing; sometimes splattering, sometimes carefully reapplying the paint, and continuing the whole process until she is satisfied with their depth and atmosphere. Joan was born in Glasgow. Her home studio is in Edinburgh’s West End. Joan has exhibited widely across the UK, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London in 2014, 2016 and 2017. &Gallery, 3 Dundas Street, Edinburgh, EH3 6QG 0131 467 0618 :: [email protected] :: andgallery.co.uk JOAN DOERR EXHIBITIONS 2021 Views from a Sanctuary, Solo Show, &Gallery, Edinburgh 4th Anniversary Exhibition, &Gallery, Edinburgh Tiny yet Mighty, &Gallery, Edinburgh 2020 The Royal Scottish Academy Annual Open Exhibition online 2019 SSA+VAS Open 2019, Royal Scottish Academy Building, Edinburgh On a Small Scale, Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh Group Show at The Room, An Talla Solais, Ullapool Time Spent Amongst Trees: Society of Scottish Artists, Meffan Museum and Art Gallery, Forfar Palimpsest: Society of Scottish Artists, An Lanntair, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis Visual Arts Scotland Annual Exhibition, Royal Scottish Academy Building, Edinburgh Society of Scottish Artists Annual Exhibition, Royal Scottish Academy Building, Edinburgh 2018 Even More Alchemy, Tatha Galley, Newport-on-Tay, Fife On a Small Scale, Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh The Royal Scottish Academy Annual Open Exhibition, Edinburgh Solo show, Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh Group Show at The Room, An Talla Solais Gallery, Ullapool Open, SSA and VAS Together 2018, The Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh 2017 On a Small Scale, Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh Edinburgh Art Fair - • Scottish Art: Then and Now
Scottish Art: Then and Now by Clarisse Godard-Desmarest “Ages of Wonder: Scotland’s Art 1540 to Now”, an exhibition presented in Edinburgh by the Royal Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture tells the story of collecting Scottish art. Mixing historic and contemporary works, it reveals the role played by the Academy in championing the cause of visual arts in Scotland. Reviewed: Tom Normand, ed., Ages of Wonder: Scotland’s Art 1540 to Now Collected by the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture, Edinburgh, The Royal Scottish Academy, 2017, 248 p. The Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) and the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) have collaborated to present a survey of collecting by the academy since its formation in 1826 as the Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Ages of Wonder: Scotland’s Art 1540 to Now (4 November 2017-7 January 2018) is curated by RSA President Arthur Watson, RSA Collections Curator Sandy Wood and Honorary Academician Tom Normand. It has spawned a catalogue as well as a volume of fourteen essays, both bearing the same title as the exhibition. The essay collection, edited by Tom Normand, includes chapters on the history of the RSA collections, the buildings on the Mound, artistic discourse in the nineteenth century, teaching at the academy, and Normand’s “James Guthrie and the Invention of the Modern Academy” (pp. 117–34), on the early, complex history of the RSA. Contributors include Duncan Macmillan, John Lowrey, William Brotherston, John Morrison, Helen Smailes, James Holloway, Joanna Soden, Alexander Moffat, Iain Gale, Sandy Wood, and Arthur Watson.

  • Download Craft Scotland Celebrates... Wood PDF 6 Feb 2019
MEDIA RELEASE: Craft Scotland and VAS showcase material mastery in wood by Scotland based makers Three of Scotland's most exciting artists present their work in the third Craft Scotland celebrates... exhibition as part of ALIGHT at Royal Scottish Academy In the third of a planned series celebrating craft mediums Craft Scotland is delighted once again to be partnering with Visual Arts Scotland (VAS) to celebrate contemporary woodworking through a presentation of multidisciplinary works from gifted Scotland based makers. This year Craft Scotland has chosen to explore wood through the diverse work of three makers: Charlotte Barker, Beth Legg and Naomi Mcintosh. Their work is presented alongside hirta, a modular structure that acts as a focus for discussion around materiality, design and making. Challenging the common perceptions of wood, this year the Craft Scotland celebrates... wood showcase highlights the versatility of wood as a craft material, and the diversity of applications it can be adapted to. Selected by the VAS committee and representatives of Craft Scotland, the three invited artists will form the starting point for a wider celebration of the diverse discipline of contemporary woodworking throughout the ALIGHT exhibition. A sense of movement is offered by Charlotte Barker, the wood’s natural texture contrasting with the controlled markings of her ceramic vessels. Beth Legg’s objects and jewellery are rooted in the poetic nature of metal, wood and stone and her fascination with hinterlands while Naomi Mcintosh’s designs explore volume, pattern and movement. Speaking ahead of the exhibition opening Craft Scotland Director Irene Kernan said: “Our media-specific showcases were born out of Craft Scotland and Visual Arts Scotland's mutual ambition to exhibit high-quality craft, alongside works of fine art, in a venue fitting of its stature.

These accounts were written by the ministers of the time and, together with snippets from other books such as Alex Warden’s “Angus or Forfarshire – The Land and People”, form the core of our knowledge of the Parish’s past. In the last 50 years the Parish and its people have undergone many rapid and significant changes. These have come about through local government reorganisations, easier forms of personal transport and the advent of electricity, but above all, by the massive changes in farming. Dwellings, which were once farmhouses or cottages for farm-workers, have been sold and extensively altered. New houses have been built and manses, and even mansion houses, have been converted to new uses. What used to be a predominantly agricultural community has now changed forever. The last full Statistical Account was published in 1951, with revisions in 1967.

GENDER REFLECTIONS: A RECONSIDERATION OF PICTISH MIRROR AND COMB SYMBOLS by Traci N. Billings A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Anthropology at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee December 2016 ABSTRACT GENDER REFLECTIONS: A RECONSIDERATION OF PICTISH MIRROR AND COMB SYMBOLS by Traci N. Billings The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2016 Under the Supervision of Professor Bettina Arnold, PhD. The interpretation of prehistoric iconography is complicated by the tendency to project contemporary male/female gender dichotomies into the past. Pictish monumental stone sculpture in Scotland has been studied over the last 100 years. Traditionally, mirror and comb symbols found on some stones produced in Scotland between AD 400 and AD 900 have been interpreted as being associated exclusively with women and/or the female gender. This thesis re-examines this assumption in light of more recent work to offer a new interpretation of Pictish mirror and comb symbols and to suggest a larger context for their possible meaning.

Stunning shell sand beaches fringed with machair, vast expanses of moorland, rugged hills, dramatic cliffs and surrounding seas all contain a rich biodiversity of flora, fauna and marine life. Together with a thriving Gaelic culture, this provides an inspiring island environment to live, study and work in, and a culturally rich place to explore as a visitor. The islands are privileged to be home to several award-winning contemporary Art Centres and Festivals, plus a creative trail of many smaller artist/maker run spaces. This publication aims to guide you to the galleries, shops and websites, where Art and Craft made in the Outer Hebrides can be enjoyed. En-route there are numerous sculptures, landmarks, historical and archaeological sites to visit. The guide documents some (but by no means all) of these contemplative places, which interact with the surrounding landscape, interpreting elements of island history and relationships with the natural environment. The Comhairle’s Heritage and Library Services are comprehensively detailed. Museum nan Eilean at Lews Castle in Stornoway, by special loan from the British Museum, is home to several of the Lewis Chessmen, one of the most significant archaeological finds in the UK. Throughout the islands a network of local historical societies, run by dedicated volunteers, hold a treasure trove of information, including photographs, oral histories, genealogies, croft histories and artefacts specific to their locality.
