By BEVERLY SLAPIN SAN FRANCISCO, June 28— It was festive as ever, with balloons and rainbow flags lining the length of Market Street, the outrageous Sisters o f Perpetual Indulgence mocking the church, and with Gays for Brunch, Gays Against Brunch, Les­ bians Against Brunch and Lesbians Against Pot- lucks marching and dancing to the beat of rock, jazz, salsa, and country music in the sunny San Francisco afternoon. But the theme of this year’s march, the tenth in San Francisco, since the Stonewall Rebellion in New York City, was “Front Line of Freedom,’ a recognition, as organizers said, “of our integrity and peril.” It was the largest and most political Lesbian/Gay Freedom Day Parade ever, accord­ ing to organizers and participants alike, a some 300,000, with 50 floats, and 160 contingents, marched from the Embarcadero to the Civic Cen­ ter, angrily denouncing the New Right’s threat to their existence. The chants and placards tliis year both de­ monstrated the Fighting spirit of a community under attack, as well as their willingness to “ex­ tend hands around the world to those struggling SAN FRANCISCO, June 28— Some 300,000 lesbians, gay mpn, and their supporters marched here today. Many cities choose the weekend closest to June 27-29 so that the celebration will coincide with the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. The Stonewall Rebellion of June 28, 1969 in New York City is widely recognized as the birthplace of the gay rights movement and is commemorated annually in gay communities around the world with pride parades and festivals. June 5: World Environment Day By resolution 2994 (XXVII) of December 15, 1972, the General Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day, to deepen public awareness of the need to preserve and enhance the environment. That date was chosen because it was the opening day of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm1972), which led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Twenty years later, the Assembly convened UNCED in Rio de Janeiro, where nations came together to take the decisions needed to rekindle the hopes of the 1972 Conference and to take up the challenges of a viable and equitable balance between environment and development and a sustainable future for the earth and its people. Residents, merchants, and those who work in the Central City area of the Tenderloin are at the “mercy” of the hundreds of thugs, drug addicts, thieves, and murderers who have descended upon the area from the East Bay which is conducting a hard crack down on the criminal element in those towns and cities. And they come to the Central City, because it is the poorest area of the city and it is the only area where you can get a cheap room, cruddy as it may be. The San Erancisco Police Department’s only response to the drastic rise in violent crime in the Central City, is to say “We don t have enough men and women.” Really? is the response to that typical SFPD excuse for their incompetence. Eor the residents and mer­ chants of the Central City know that the SEPD has a Vice/Morals Squad that has nothing better to do than to harass gays in the Cen­ tral City and in the Polk area. Violent crime is up over two hundred percent over last year and most of these go unreported, for waiting for a police car is like wait­ ing for a turtle caravan to pass.

On Saturday, organizers scrapped a major cannabis rally in downtown Denver at the last minute, and hundreds of flight cancellations at Denver International Airport frustrated the plans of travelers aiming to spend the week sampling the state’s legal cannabis market in honor of the cannabis high holiday. But that didn’t mean folks weren’t still ready to pre-party. On Saturday afternoon, customers lined up in the lobby of Simply Pure, a Denver recreational marijuana shop, since the shop’s “4/20 Block Party” product specials (one-gram joints for $4.20 and other deals) had filled the retail space to capacity. As customers from as far away as Washington, D.C., sniffed at sample jars filled with cannabis strains, a sales representative from Incredibles, a marijuana edibles company, manned a nearby display table, handing out branded pens and lighters and promoting the virtues of the company’s spiked chocolate bars. “It’s great if you drop it into your coffee,” he told a prospective customer.
