Many cities choose the weekend closest to June 27-29 so that the celebration will coincide with the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. The Stonewall Rebellion of June 28, 1969 in New York City is widely recognized as the birthplace of the gay rights movement and is commemorated annually in gay communities around the world with pride parades and festivals. June 5: World Environment Day By resolution 2994 (XXVII) of December 15, 1972, the General Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day, to deepen public awareness of the need to preserve and enhance the environment. That date was chosen because it was the opening day of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm1972), which led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Twenty years later, the Assembly convened UNCED in Rio de Janeiro, where nations came together to take the decisions needed to rekindle the hopes of the 1972 Conference and to take up the challenges of a viable and equitable balance between environment and development and a sustainable future for the earth and its people. On Saturday, organizers scrapped a major cannabis rally in downtown Denver at the last minute, and hundreds of flight cancellations at Denver International Airport frustrated the plans of travelers aiming to spend the week sampling the state’s legal cannabis market in honor of the cannabis high holiday. But that didn’t mean folks weren’t still ready to pre-party. On Saturday afternoon, customers lined up in the lobby of Simply Pure, a Denver recreational marijuana shop, since the shop’s “4/20 Block Party” product specials (one-gram joints for $4.20 and other deals) had filled the retail space to capacity. As customers from as far away as Washington, D.C., sniffed at sample jars filled with cannabis strains, a sales representative from Incredibles, a marijuana edibles company, manned a nearby display table, handing out branded pens and lighters and promoting the virtues of the company’s spiked chocolate bars. “It’s great if you drop it into your coffee,” he told a prospective customer.

Gay pride advocates work for equal “rights and benefits” for LGBT people. The movement has three main premises: that people should be proud of their sexual orientation and gender identity, that sexual diversity is a gift, and that sexual orientation and gender identity are inherent and cannot be intentionally altered. In June of 2000, Bill Clinton deemed the month of June, “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.” The month was chosen to remember a riot in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan that is thought to be the beginning of the gay liberation movement in the United States. June is now the month of acceptance and the month to welcome diversity in communities regardless of sexual orientation.     Identities, Sexualities and Commemorations: Pride Parades, Public Space and Sexual Dissidence Identities, Sexualities and Commemorations: Pride Parades, Public Space and Sexual Dissidence Begonya Enguix Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, [email protected] ABSTRACT In this article, we will approach the mechanisms used for entitlement and the way in which public space has been reappropriated and resignified by sexual dissidents as a space for vindication, visibilization and commemoration. We will do so through the analysis of the LGTB Pride Parades in Spain – Madrid Pride in particular – and through an analysis of the relationship between territorialisation, communities (shared identities) and political activ- ism. The use of public space as a specific locus for entitlement and commemoration has only been possible in Spain since democracy was restored and, therefore, it is politically meaningful. LGTB Pride Parades marching through central streets do not only occupy, but ‘produce’ space and identities. They constitute a privileged field for the analysis of the mechanisms through which sexual diversity manifests and expresses social and subjec- tive identities which are intertwined with discourses and counter-discourses that can be traced through the participation (or absence) from the event, through the strategies of re- presentation displayed and through the narratives about this event. This work is based on systematic observation of the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Madrid parades and on the observa- tion of 2007 and 2008 Barcelona parades. We have also undertaken in-depth interviews with members of the organisation of Madrid Pride and Barcelona Pride 2009. It is preceded by intensive fieldwork on the gay community carried out intermittently from 1990 to the present day.

(article starts on next page) Proud to Be Pride: A Content Analysis of City Websites Nanna Gillberg, University of Gothenburg, Sweden Petra Adolfsson, University of Gothenburg, Sweden Abstract: In today’s society cities on a global scale are competing for resources and publicity. According to Richard Florida’s creative capital theory, highly educated, creative people are the driving force behind regional economic growth. Creativity has become a main keyword in urban marketing around the world. What the “creative class” is looking for in a place is openness to diversity of all kinds. Hence cities are trying to attract the creative class by communicating this trait. How is diversity in general and gay friendliness more specifically communicated through websites promoting cities? That is the overriding question posed in this article. The article examines the official websites of three of the five largest cities of each continent. Inspired by the work of Florida the studied websites are seen as examples of how gayness works as a form of cultural capital.
