Holly Ritchie Reverend Dr. Thomas McCulloch is a well-documented figure in Nova Scotia’s educational historiography. Despite this, his political activism and Presbyterian background has been largely overlooked. This thesis offers a re-interpretation of the well-known figure and the Pictou Academy’s fight for permeant pecuniary aid. Through examining Scotland’s early politico-religious history from the Reformation through the Covenanting crusades and into the first disruption of the Church of Scotland, this thesis demonstrates that the language of political disaffection was frequently expressed through the language of religion. As a result, this framework of response was exported with the Scottish diaspora to Nova Scotia, and used by McCulloch to stimulate a movement for equal consideration within the colony. Several "covenants" were made during the strug­ gles against Catholicism and the Church of England so that the Scottish Presbyterians became known as the "covenanters." This was particularly true after the great "National Covenant" of 1638. 1 The Church of Scotland was committed to the great prin­ ciple "that the Lord Jesus Christ is the sole Head and King of the Church, and hath therein appointed a government distinct from that of the Civil magistrate. D thesis University of Stirling 2003 ABSTRACT The nineteenth century saw the revival and widespread propagation in Scotland of a view of Scottish history that put Presbyterianism at the heart of the nation's identity, and told the story of Scotland's history largely in terms of the church's struggle for religious and constitutional liberty. Key to. this development was the Anti-Burgher minister Thomas M'Crie, who, spurred by attacks on Presbyterianism found in eighteenth-century and contemporary historical literature, between the years 1811 and 1819 wrote biographies of John Knox and Andrew Melville and a vindication of the Covenanters. M'Crie generally followed the very hard line found in the Whig- Presbyterian polemical literature that emerged from the struggles of the sixteenth and seventeenth century; he was particularly emphatic in support of the independence of the church from the state within its own sphere. His defence of his subjects embodied a Scottish Whig interpretation of British history, in which British constitutional liberties were prefigured in Scotland and in a considerable part won for the British people by the struggles of Presbyterian Scots during the seventeenth century. M'Crie's work won a huge following among the Scottish reading public, and spawned a revival in Presbyterian historiography which lasted through the century. His influence was considerably enhanced through the affinity felt for his work by the Anti- Intrusionists in the Church of Scotland and their successorsin the Free Church (1843- 1900), who were particularly attracted by his uncompromising defence of the spiritual independence of the church.

A battlefield is of national importance if it makes a contribution to the understanding of the archaeology and history of the nation as a whole, or has the potential to do so, or holds a particularly significant place in the national consciousness. For a battlefield to be included in the Inventory, it must be considered to be of national importance either for its association with key historical events or figures; or for the physical remains and/or archaeological potential it contains; or for its landscape context. In addition, it must be possible to define the site on a modern map with a reasonable degree of accuracy. The aim of the Inventory is to raise awareness of the significance of these nationally important battlefield sites and to assist in their protection and management for the future. Inventory battlefields are a material consideration in the planning process. The Inventory is also a major resource for enhancing the understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of historic battlefields, for promoting education and stimulating further research, and for developing their potential as attractions for visitors. Brought up “among a peasantry whose ancestors fought and fell for the Covenant,” he felt under deep obligation to prove from “their religious and secular bonds and leagues” that they were neither “a rigid sect in the Christian Church” nor “a restless, rebellious political party.” During his researches, King Hewison discovered that the traditions passed from generation to generation beside many a cottage fireside were substantially corroborated by the records he consulted in various libraries. Today, students of history are taught little or nothing about these God-fearing men, women and children who “loved not their lives to the death” for the sake of ‘Christ’s crown and covenant.’ In this brief study, I hope to remind our generation who these faithful servants of Christ were, what they stood and suffered for, and why we need to restore their principles and life-style to our nation. Eugene Goodrich, Professor Emeritus of History, Mount Allison University To fully understand the following article, it will be helpful to know that the ‘Covenanters’ were a small dissenting group within the Scottish-Irish Presbyterian tradition that claimed to represent the theology of its founders, Jean Calvin in Geneva and his disciple, John Knox, in Scotland, in its purest—and only valid—form. Among their principles and practices: 1. Virulent rejection of episcopacy (rule by bishops, as in the Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran churches) in favour of governance by a select group of lay elders or ‘presbyters’ (the Greek word for ‘elder’). 2. Simplicity of church architecture and church services with no musical instruments and no hymns, only unaccompanied or ‘a capella’ singing of the Psalms, long prayer and even longer sermons. 3. Daily family worship led by the father. 4. Strict Sabbatarianism, reserving the Lord’s Day to public worship while forbidding all unnecessary labour and frivolous entertainment. 5. An annual communion service spread over four days, organized to renew members’ faith in much the same way as revival meetings among Methodists and Baptists. 5. Insistence that Christ is the only legitimate head of both church and state. The state is to be separate from the church, but must govern according to strict Christian principles (as taught by the church); any state that does not do so is illegitimate and must be resisted.
