Preistoria Alpina, 42 (2007): 109-118 ISSN 09-0157 © Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali, Trento 2007 Transalpine pass routes in the Swiss Central Alps and the strategic use of topographic resources Philippe DELLA CASA Department of Pre-/Protohistory, University of Zurich, Karl-Schmid-Str. ���������������������������4, 8006 Zurich, Switzerland E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY - Transalpine pass routes in the Swiss Central Alps and the strategic use of topographic resources - Using examples from the San Bernardino and the St. Gotthard passes in the Swiss Central Alps, this paper discusses how the existence of transalpine high altitude pass routes can be inferred, even though there is a lack physical evidence, from specific Bronze and Iron Age settlement patterns in access valleys. Particular attention is given to the effect of topography within the territorial and economic organizational area on transalpine tracks and traffic routes. A set of recurring patterns, such as strategic position, natural and/or artificial protection, presence of “foreign” materials, can help identifying (settlement) sites with particular functions as regards traffic and trade within the systems of territorial organization. Moreover, the paper also addresses socio-dynamic issues of the problem of transalpine pass routes. ORGANISING ANARCHY SPATIAL STRATEGY , PREFIGURATION , AND THE POLITICS OF EVERYDAY LIFE ANTHONY JAMES ELLIOT INCE THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY QUEEN MARY , UNIVERSITY OF LONDON 2010 0 ABSTRACT This research is an analysis of efforts to develop a politics of everyday life through embedding anarchist and left-libertarian ideas and practices into community and workplace organisation. It investigates everyday life as a key terrain of political engagement, interrogating the everyday spatial strategies of two emerging forms of radical politics. The community dimension of the research focuses on two London-based social centre collectives, understood as community-based, anarchist-run political spaces. The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), an international trade union that organises along radical left-libertarian principles, comprises the workplace element. The empirical research was conducted primarily through an activist-ethnographic methodology. Based in a politically-engaged framework, the research opens up debates surrounding the role of place-based class politics in a globalised world, and how such efforts can contribute to our understanding of social relations, place, networks, and political mobilisation and transformation. The research thus contributes to and provides new perspectives on understanding and enacting everyday spatial strategies. Utilising Marxist and anarchist thought, the research develops a distinctive theoretical framework that draws inspiration from both perspectives. Through an emphasis on how groups seek to implement particular radical principles, the research also explores the complex interactions between theory and practice in radical politics. I argue that it is in everyday spaces and practices where we find the most powerful sources for political transformation. -

ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA European Train Names: a Historic Outline* Christian Weyers DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.201 Abstract This paper gives a first overview of the onomastic category of train names, searches to classify the corpus and reviews different stages of their productivity. Apart from geographical names (toponyms, choronyms, compass directions) generally indicating points of origin and destination of the trains in question, a considerable number of personal names have entered this category, of classical literary authors, musicians and scientists, but also of many fictional or non-fictional characters taken from literature or legendary traditions. In some cases also certain symbolic attributes of these persons and finally even heraldic figures have given their names to trains. In terms of their functionality, train names originally were an indicator of exclusiveness and high grade of travel quality, but they developed gradually, as they dispersed over the European continent, into a rather unspecific, generalized appellation, also for regional and local trains. After two periods of prosperity after 1950, the privatisation of railway companies starting in the 1990s had again a very positive effect on the category, as the number of named trains initially reached a new record in this decade. ***** The first train names appeared in England in the 1860s in addition to names for steam locomotives, and on two different levels. The Special Scotch Express between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh (inaugurated in 1862) was called by the public The Flying Scotsman from the 1870s, but it succeeded as the official name not before 1924. Also the names of the German diesel trainsets Der Fliegende Hamburger and Der Fliegende Kölner were colloquial name creations, as were the Train Bleu and the Settebello operated from 1922 and 1953 but officially named in 1947 and 1958, respectively. -

A Nomadic War Machine in the Metropolis: En/Countering London’s 21st Century Housing Crisis with Focus E15 Paul Watt Abstract This paper builds upon Colin McFarlane’s (2011) call in City for an ‘assemblage urbanism’ to supplement critical urbanism. It does so by mapping the spatio-political contours of London’s 21st century housing crisis through the geophilosophical framework of Deleuze and Guattari’s A Thousand Plateaus (2013) and Hardt and Negri’s analysis of the metropolis in Commonwealth (2009). The paper examines the Focus E15 housing campaign based around a group of young mothers in the East London borough of Newham. In 2013 the mothers were living in the Focus E15 Foyer supported housing unit for young people in Newham, but they were subsequently threatened with eviction as a result of welfare cuts. After successfully contesting the mothers’ own prospective expulsion from the city, the campaign shifted to the broader struggle for ‘social housing not social cleansing’. The paper draws upon participant observation at campaign events and interviews with key members. The Focus E15 campaign has engaged in a series of actions which form a distinctive way of undertaking housing politics in London, a politics that can be understood using a Deleuzoguattarian framework. Several campaign actions, including temporary occupations, are analysed. It is argued that these actions have created ‘smooth space’ in a manner which is to an extent distinctive from many other London housing campaigns which are rooted in a more sedentary defensive approach based around the protection of existing homes and 1 communities – ‘our place’. It is such spatio-political creativity – operating as a ‘nomadic war machine’ – which has given rise to the high-profile reputation of the Focus E15 campaigners as inspirational young women who do not ‘know their place’. -

Ein Star wird geboren. 60 Jahre VT 11.5 und TEE Zum 60. Jubiläum dieses Eisenbahn-Kultobjektes und des TEE-Verkehrs schauen wir auf seine reiche und wechselvolle Geschichte zurück. Mitte der 1950er Jahre nahm die Wirtschaft in Europa wieder Fahrt auf, die westeuropäischen Länder begannen nach den Verwüstungen des Zweiten Weltkrieges neue Beziehungen zu knüpfen.In diesem Zusammenhang beschlossen acht europäische Bahngesellschaften ein gemeinsames Zugangebot einzuführen: den Trans-Europ-Express, kurz TEE. Das moderne Schnellzugnetz sollte die europäischen Metropolen miteinander verbinden und speziell den zahlungskräftigen Geschäftsreisenden der Wirtschaftswunderzeit eine Alternative zum Auto- und Luftverkehr bieten. Für dieses neuartige Verkehrssystem beschaffte die Deutsche Bundesbahn mehrere Triebzüge mit Triebwagen vom Typ VT 11.5, die im Juni 1957 in Betrieb genommen wurden, später kamen auch lokbespannte Züge zum Einsatz. Mit dieser Entscheidung schrieb die DB Geschichte. 15 Jahre lang waren die deutschen Dieseltriebzüge als TEE im Einsatz und prägten das Image des internationalen Schnellzugverkehrs wie keine andere Zuggarnitur. TEE-Zug (VT 11.5) im Hauptbahnhof Frankfurt am Main, um 1960. Symbol für ein Europa ohne Grenzen Eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit den europäischen Nachbarn war von Beginn an von großer Bedeutung für die Deutsche Bundesbahn. Beispielhaft steht dafür die im Jahr 1951 zunächst mit den Französischen Staatsbahnen gegründete europäische Güterwagengemeinschaft „EUROP“, wodurch ein umfangreicher, frei verfügbarer europäischer Güterwagen-Pool entstand. Drei Jahre später einigte sich die DB mit den meisten europäischen Bahngesellschaften darauf, künftig im Personenreiseverkehr nur noch zwei, im Komfort angeglichene Wagenklassen zu führen. Ein weiteres Ergebnis der wachsenden (west)europäischen Kooperation war die Gründung des europäischen Schnellzugnetzes TEE. Die Entwicklung begann 1954 mit der Gründung der Trans-Europ-Express-Kommission mit Sitz in Den Haag. -
