As one of the pioneers programs of graduate and undergraduate study in photography in the India , we aim at providing the best to our students to help them relate practical studies in art & craft in professional context. The Photography program combines the teaching of craft, history, and contemporary ideas with the critical examination of conventional forms of art making. The curriculum at IFT is designed to give students the technical training and aesthetic awareness to develop a strong individual expression as an artist. The faculty represents a broad range of interests and aesthetics, with course offerings often reflecting their individual passions and concerns. In this fundamental course, students will identify basic photographic tools and their intended purposes, including the proper use of various camera systems, light meters and film selection. -

Minoru Photo Club July 24, 2018 There are different ways of creating a sense of movement in photography. From John Hedgecoe’s Photography Basics, he listed four ways – Slow Shutter, panning, diagonal movement and zoom movement. For today, I will share with you what I have researched on the art of panning using a slow shutter speed. There are many unwritten rules in photography. Keeping your camera steady is one of them. Well, for this artistic technique, you will need to forget all you have learned about the importance of shooting with a rock-solid camera. The creative result will be many cool motion-blur images The Art Of Panning (by Natalie Norton) What is Panning? Panning is one of many artistic techniques for more creative photographs. It is the horizontal movement of a camera, deliberately moving or panning the camera, as it scans a moving subject. It is the swinging of the camera - steadily to follow a passing subject, (can keep a moving image in one place on the film). Panning is another effective way of instilling a sense of motion in a picture with a moving subject. The result is a fairly sharp subject set against a blurred and streaked background. This gives the shot a real feeling of motion, speed and action. SOME TIPS & GUIDELINES: Subject/What should I Photograph? – since you want to create a sense of motion, your obvious subject choices include cars, racing cars, joggers, cyclists, etc.. But do try this technique when capturing pets, horses, people running or even someone on a swing. -

This online course was written by Chris Garcia, an Austin American-Statesman Film Critic. The course was originally offered through Barnes & Noble's online education program and is now available on The Midnight Palace with permission. There are a few ways to get the most out of this class. We certainly recommend registering on our message boards if you aren't currently a member. This will allow you to discuss Film Noir with the other members; we have a category specifically dedicated to noir. Secondly, we also recommend that you purchase the following books. They will serve as a companion to the knowledge offered in this course. You can click each cover to purchase directly. Both of these books are very well written and provide incredible insight in to Film Noir, its many faces, themes and undertones. This course is structured in a way that makes it easy for students to follow along and pick up where they leave off. There are a total of FIVE lessons. Each lesson contains lectures, summaries and an assignment. Note: this course is not graded. The sole purpose is to give students a greater understanding of Dark City, or, Film Noir to the novice gumshoe. Having said that, the assignments are optional but highly recommended. The Museum of Modern Art 50th Anniversary NO. 38 •JO RELEASE ON OR BEFORE JULY 11, 1980 "ASPECTS OF FILM NOIR: ALAN LAPP IN THE 40*5" OPENS AT MoMA ON JULY 11, 1980 A series of four important Alan Ladd films forms ASPECTS OF FILM NOIR: ALAN LADD IN THE 40'S, an exhibition running from July 11 through July 15, 1980 at The Museum of Modern Art. To be shown in the series are: THIS GUN FOR HIRE, Ladd's first starring role; THE GLASS KEY; THE BLUE DAHLIA; and the 1949 Paramount production of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic, THE GREAT GATSBY. The films will be shown in 35mm studio prints made available by Universal/MCA and the UCLA Film Archives. Notes from The Museum's Department of Film indicate that "During the 1940's Hollywood studios produced a large number of crime melodramas whose stylistic con sistency has since been given the name of 'Film Noir'. These shadowy and urbane films not only commanded consummate studio craftsmanship, but enabled a charismatic group of performers to express the tensions that provided the thematic content for the 'Film Noir'. At Paramount Pictures during the 1940's perhaps the emblematic figure of the 'Film Noir' was Alan Ladd." The series opens with THIS GUN FOR HIRE at 8:30 PM on Friday, July 11 (to be repeated at 6 PM on Sunday, July 13). The film was directed by Frank Tuttle in 1942 with Ladd, Veronica Lake and Robert Preston and runs 81 minutes. THIS GUN FOR HIRE was the film that launched Ladd's career. -

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORY NOTE: Henry Hathaway (1898 – 1985) was born Henri Leopold de Fiennes on March 13, 1889, in Sacramento, California, to actress Jean Weil and stage manager Henry Rhody. He started his career as a child film actor in 1911. In 1915 Hathaway quit school and went to work at Universal Studios as a laborer, later becoming a property man. He was recruited for service during World War I in 1917, Hathaway saw his time in the army as an opportunity to get an education. He was never deployed, contracting the flu during the 1918 influenza pandemic. After being discharged from the army in 1918, Hathaway pursued a career in financing but returned to Hollywood to work as a property man at Samuel Goldwyn Studios and Paramount Studios. By 1924 Hathaway was working as an Assistant Director at Paramount Studios, under directors such as Josef von Sternberg, Victor Fleming, Frank Lloyd, and William K. Howard. It’s a busy year for birthdays: John Wayne, FROM THE Laurence Olivier, Barbara Stanwyck, Fay Wray, Burgess Meredith, Katharine Hepburn, Gene BOOTH Autry, and Rosalind Russell, among others, would have turned 100 this year. We’re celebrating by NOT slavishly following the mob of classic-movie stations that will be running King Kong and His Girl Friday and Git Along Little Dogies in ’round-the- from the booth clock birthday bashes. Instead, we’re doing what we do best: dig through the vaults for unheralded gems and seldom-screened classics. So instead of Fay Wray screaming and John Wayne shooting, we have Walter Huston saving America (again!) in Gabriel Over the White House, Henry Fonda winning World War II in The Immortal Sergeant, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney putting on a show (again!) in Strike Up the Band, and Judy Holliday foreseeing American Idol’s cult of instant celebrity in It Should Happen to You. And, for a change of pace, we’ve got giant grasshoppers, giant scorpions, giant creatures from Venus, and one tiny, tiny man in a handful of 1950s sci-fi classics scattered throughout the season. (Speaking of anniversaries, if you blinked, you probably missed the 35th anniversary of this very theater back in May. Happy birthday to us.) Program by Michael King (MK) and Michael W. Everywhere Jews are refugees. They persecute us. They kill us. They are burning down our synagogues, seize our property and ban us from our professions. When I’m reading the Nazi paper, I read: ‘Jews own the banks!’, ‘Jews own all the big corporations!’, ‘Jews are so smart and clever they control the world!’ I tell you it makes me feel great!” I was reminded of this classic Jewish joke while reading Vincent Brook’s Driven to Darkness (2009), about the influence of the “Jewish experience” on film noir. -
