Club News Another wet week caused fixtures to be cancelled although a pleasant day’s weather on Sunday allowed the annual Keith Strong Memorial match to take place and saw Binfield retaining the trophy. Special mention this week goes to Colin and Mikey’s U13 “Sunday” team who, with the help of five members of the U11 squad, overcame Reading in their BYCL match through a fantastic team performance.

Parent Coaching Session(s) With a significant number of parents using the net facilities with their children we thought it might be worthwhile holding one or two sessions for parents to give them some basic skills and drills to help them help their children’s cricketing development. The sessions will be on Saturday evenings and will hopefully coincide with club social events. More details to follow…

New Changing Block Development work will be starting in the next month or so and volunteers will be needed to assist. E-mails will be sent out asking for help – if everyone can give a little time to help it will make a big difference. Many hands make light work….

Binfield Cricket Club Friendly XI Sunday 25th May v Bracknell (Keith Strong Memorial Game)

For once, a fine day’s weather allowed a senior fixture to take place but only after extensive mopping up operations on Saturday and Sunday morning took enough water from the ground to get the game underway. Mike Staves, on debut, scored an elegant 41 and Paul Edgington a fluent 45 allowing Binfield to post a competitive total of 175 for 9 from their 40 overs. Bracknell made a good start in reply but their innings tailed off to 141 all out in the 37th . were shared amongst the Binfield bowlers with Tony Boad and Ian Goddard both claiming three and the other four shared between Barney Sykes and Steve Andrews. Highlight of the Binfield fielding performance, apart from Mike Staves’ left arm throwing, was a stunning diving catch from Mikey Allan-Canty. An enjoyable day’s cricket played in good humour - it was a fitting occasion to remember both clubs’ dear friend, Keith Strong.

Midweek XI Tuesday 20th May v Finchampstead

Finchampstead 181-6 (15 overs) Binfield 89-3 (15 overs)

Berkshire Stags (VI) Sunday 18th May v Dorset Dolphins

Berkshire Stags won

U9 Thursday 22nd May v Wokingham (home - BYCL) – Cancelled due to rain

U11 Tuesday 20th May v Boyne Hill (away - BYCL)

Binfield 62-8 (16 overs) Boyne Hill 63-2 (14.5 overs)

Rain delayed the start of the match at Boyne Hill and caused a reduction in the overs to 16 per side. Binfield won the toss and decided to bat first but the batsmen found scoring difficult against accurate Boyne Hill bowling. Captain for the day, Billy Barnby top-scored with 8 but despite most others getting off the mark Binfield were still a few runs short of a competitive total. Improved running between the wickets would have helped increase the score. Despite a valiant effort in the field, Boyne Hill reached their target with an over to spare. A few less wides would have helped increase the pressure on the Boyne Hill batsmen but ultimately the home side were comfortable victors. Billy Barnby took the only to fall to a bowler but the highlight in the field was a direct hit from Sam Pemberton to run out the other Boyne Hill batsman who lost their wicket. Overall, it was not a bad performance considering the inexperience of the team through the loss five players being called up to the U13s.

U13 – Sunday Tuesday 20th May v Reading (away - BYCL)

Reading 112-8 (20 overs) Binfield 113-5 (18.2 overs)

Binfield Cricket Club A fantastic team performance from the U13s, including five players from the U11s, allowed Binfield to storm to a five wicket win at Reading. Robert Andrews and Matthew Nicholls both retired having scored 30 as they laid the foundations for the successful run chase.

U13 – Monday Monday 19th May v Henley Jaguars (home - BYCL)

Henley Jaguars 85-8 (20 overs) Binfield 86-4 (13.4 overs)

A good Binfield bowling and fielding performance restricted Henley Jaguars to 85 for the loss of eight wickets from their 20 overs. The best of the bowling figures were Lewis Wilson 4 overs, 2 for 13 and Joseph Gaffney 2 overs, 2 for 8. In reply, Binfield looked to be struggling as they lost early wickets but Nat Majakas (30) and Eddie Lee (32), both retired, saw Binfield safely home with six overs to spare.

U13 Cup Wednesday 21st May v Wokingham (away - BYCL Cup)

Wokingham 89-5 (20 overs) Binfield 76-9 (20 overs)

The hastily arranged.second round match of the BYCL U13 cup saw Binfield fall thirteen runs short in their run chase against Wokingham. Despite missing key players, Binfield put up a determined performance but fell a little short of their victory target.

U15 Monday 19th May v Emmbrook & Bearwood (away – BYCL)

Emmbrook & Bearwood 130-9 (20 overs) Binfield 130-3 (20 overs)

Despite having only eight players, the U15s put in a great performance, in taking nine Emmbrook & Bearwood wickets and restricting them to 130 from their 20 overs. In reply half centuries from Callum George (his first for Binfield) and Harry Lee allowed Binfield to get close to the home team’s total but ultimately the U15s were unable to get over the line as the match finished with scores level in an exciting finish.
