This season saw successes on the pitch: 1st XI Surrey Championship Premier Division Champions for the first time since 1980 3rd XI Division 1 Champions and gain promotion to the Premiership U17s West Surrey Youth Cricket League Division 1 Champions U15s Surrey Cricket Foundation Invitational League Champions and County Cup finalists U9s win the double! Jets are U9 West Surrey East Division Champions and Strikers are Development League Champions We also established a 5th Saturday XI (and ran 7 Saturday sides on one occasion). Congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic achievement that bucks the current participation trend in Cricket. Our fabulous Junior section continued to lead the way playing more than 250 matches. This season has had so many highlights I could not resist a personal selection: The Fantasy league has had a wonderful impact with 95 entries - congratulations to Sam and Dominic for a great initiative that has really brought the club together. Our fantastic girls’ section continuing to excel. Matt Mugan’s epic match reports and his stewardship of the mighty 5ths. The U15s winning the SJIL for the second year.     Boshamengro English Gypsy Musicians MTCD373 Boshamengro Traditional music recorded from Romany fiddlers and other musicians in Southern England 1910 - 2006 Harry Lee (fiddle), Vanslow Smith (fiddle and melodeon), Lemmy Brazil (melodeon) Walter Aldridge (harmonica), Jasper and Levi Smith (harmonica and tambourine) and others The role of Romany musicians in the traditional music of southern England While there is little evidence of the role which Romany fiddlers played in the life of their own communities in the 19th century beyond their frequent appearances at Romany weddings, there is ample documentation of the role which Romany fiddlers played in the 19th and early 20th centuries in the musical life of non-Romany communities - at fairs and on feast days, in dancing booths1, and locally for various forms of Morris Dancing2, as well as in the promotion and circulation of new tunes and dances. The latter process was described to Ralph Vaughan Williams at Tilney St Lawrence in Norfolk on 7th January 1905 by fiddler Stephen Poll (1835 - 1910), who played four ‘country dances’ for him.3 The young composer noted: He used to learn them at [King’s] Lynn Fair, when a new dance was danced he used to learn it by dancing in it - then later he would ask for the same again and then knew the tune and the dance and could start at the top. He used the fiddle for dances - the old country dances used to have more money in them because each couple as they got to the top would give him a penny.4 For all their rose-tinted ink, the 19th century ‘gypsiologists’ made some interesting observations about Romany musicians and their relationship with a settled clientele.

Kent County Cricketers A to Z Part Two 1919 to 1939 Introduction Part Two of the Kent A to Z covers the 92 cricketers who made their entry into first-class cricket for Kent between the wars. With 12 Championship titles, 330 wins and only 49 defeats, Yorkshire dominated throughout the two decades, but Kent could reasonably claim to be the most successful of the Southern counties, twice ending runners-up and in only three seasons failing to finish in the top half of the table. During those inter-war years, cricket was becoming increasingly professional. Of the names listed in the county averages in the 1921 Wisden, over 57% were amateurs. By 1931 the figure had fallen to 41%; and in the last pre-war season it was down to 33%. Kent, in common with one or two other counties, fought hard against the prevailing trend. Throughout the period, they stuck to their long- established policy of endeavouring to field a minimum of three amateurs in every match. In practice, they were quite frequently unable to do so, especially early in the season but, of the 92 cricketers listed in the following pages, 60, i.e. over 65%, were, in the idiom of the time, ‘Gentlemen’.

    Binfield Cricket Club www.binfieldcricketclub.co.uk 11 May 2014 Club News With a slightly better week’s weather, there’s a little more cricket included in this week’s newsletter… The U15s won their 1st round match in the county cup competition, the U11s won their first league match and the Sunday friendly XI managed to complete its first match of the season too. However both senior league teams were rained off on Saturday as were the U13s in their cup match on Thursday. Club Social With the advanced forecast looking good for the weekend we will be having our first social of the season on Saturday evening. We will be firing up the barbecue and the bar will be open all evening. Kwik-Cricket equipment will be available for the children to entertain themselves while parents can relax with a drink. The social will start when the 2nd XI fixture finishes which should be around 7pm but please feel free to come down earlier and watch some of the cricket. New Changing Block Thank to Warfield Parish Council for their donation of £150 which we received this week. The money will contribute to our new changing block fund. Senior Availability We are very keen to see more U15s and U17s starting to play senior cricket. If you haven’t already done so, please register on the website and update your availability. My life though insignificant by national standards, has been full of variety. Although I have found every moment of interest, I fear have lacked the gaiety and as can be seen from this note I often verge on pomposity. When I started to consider writing these reminiscences I made a list1 of the important or interesting people with whom I had, usually very fleeting, contact. Most of them would have laughed at such vulgar "names droppings"! However I hope I may be forgiven for mentioning some to enliven the otherwise dull story. It may be that reverence for "the great" started from the reading of the "Told to the Children" stories2 when Lord Roberts who was still living became one of my heroes. I made up my mind to become a Field Marshall.

Scotch-Irish and German Settlers in Virginia and the Carolinas Introduction During the 1700s many Scotch-Irish and German immigrants arrived in America. They and their children settled parts of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Today, most of their descendants never think about their heritage. Most live in the present, are working on real-life problems, or planning their future. That attitude was shared by their ancestor immigrants 250 years ago. Nonetheless, I suspect most descendants have at least wondered what the word Scotch-Irish means. All my life, I have heard various facts, but never understood how they fit together. Some facts appeared contradictory. So, I investigated, and discovered a colorful story that far exceeded my expectations. My principal objectives were to: Understand certain comments made by grandparents and other relatives over 40 years ago. Understand the confusing adjective Scotch-Irish. Understand the confusing cultural icons of bagpipes, kilts, Celtic whistles, etc. Understand the history of Moravian, Lutheran, Mennonite, Amish, Dunkards, Presbyterian, Puritanism, Huguenot, Quaker, Methodist, Congregational, and Baptist denominations that have churches in the Carolinas. Understand why and when surnames became common. Understand ancestor Margaret Moore‘s recollections of the Siege of Londonderry in 1689. Understand motivations of Scotch-Irish and German immigrants during the 1700s and terms of their Carolina land grants. Understand relations between early Carolina immigrants and Native Americans. Understand why Scotland‘s heroine Flora Macdonald came to live in North Carolina in 1774.
