CONTACTS: Cynthia Shaw, The Kresge Foundation 248.643.9630 Phone [email protected] Mira Burack, College for Creative Studies 313.664.7939 Phone [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MICHIGAN OPERA THEATRE’S DAVID DICHIERA NAMED 2013 KRESGE EMINENT ARTIST DETROIT, MICHIGAN – JANUARY 9, 2013 - Composer and operatic impresario David DiChiera – a champion of Detroit’s renaissance – has been named the 2013 Kresge Eminent Artist. The Kresge Eminent Artist award and $50,000 prize recognize DiChiera’s contributions as founder, music director, and general director of the Michigan Opera Theatre; his creativity and commitment to the community; and his efforts to build cultural bridges through the arts. A composer whose works include “Four Sonnets” (1965), “Cyrano” (2007) and the children’s opera “Rumpelstiltskin” (1973), DiChiera has presented opera, dance, and musical theater productions in Detroit and throughout Michigan for more than four decades. He has encouraged an appreciation for music and libretto in young people and adults, enriched the operatic repertoire by commissioning and premiering new productions and advanced the proposition that opera should reflect the community in which it is performed. DiChiera has opened the doors to new audiences and been a tirelessly effective force for community vitality, says Rip Rapson, president and CEO of The Kresge Foundation. “David is one of our community's most visionary leaders. He has nurtured an art form that combines music, dance, visual arts, and literature to tell stories of inspiration, power, and relevance – stories that bridge across eras and generations. He has contributed to the physical revitalization of our downtown cultural and entertainment district, re-energizing the landmark Music Hall theater and marshaling support for the opera house.

A new era begins. 2014 ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends of MOT, Michigan Opera Theatre is among our nation’s leading opera companies and I am delighted to be back in Detroit to work with founder and artistic director David DiChiera and a dedicated Board of Directors under the Chairmanship of R. Jamison Williams. My wife Brenda and I are appreciative to all who have extended many kindnesses to us since our arrival early in the year. One of the points of distinction of MOT in comparison with other opera companies in the nation is that our organization consists of three distinct operations: 1) Michigan Opera Theatre: the production and presentation of operas and musical theatre, along with the presentation of dance and education/community programs; 2) Detroit Opera House: the performance venue for MOT presentations and the Broadway Series of the Nederlander organization; a learning center for dance, choral, and other educational activities; and a highly sought- after venue for concerts, conferences, graduations, and other events; and 3) Opera House Parking & Retail Center. Concurrent with an exciting and vibrant range of artistic offerings this past season, members of the Board and Staff have been involved with a planning process designed to address the next phase for MOT. Since the beginning of the year, the Boston based firm TDC, one of the leading consultant agencies in the nation, has been working diligently with Michigan Opera Theatre to assist our organization with a strategic planning initiative. As part of this initiative, there have been a series of audience surveys and focus groups, and several strategic ideas have been tested.

Kim Herron, The Kresge Foundation 248.643.9630 Phone [email protected] Erin Marie McDonald, College for Creative Studies 313.664.7941 Phone [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PHOTOGRAPHER BILL RAUHAUSER SELECTED AS 2014 KRESGE EMINENT ARTIST DETROIT, MICHIGAN – JANUARY 9, 2014 – Iconic Detroit photographer and educator Bill Rauhauser has been named the 2014 Kresge Eminent Artist. Rauhauser has devoted more than 60 years to “being there” – being present and engaged on the city’s streets, inside the studio and inside the classroom. He joins five other artists who have since 2008 received the award and $50,000 prize in recognition of professional achievements, contributions to the cultural community and dedication to Detroit and its residents. Rauhauser is a uniquely literary photographer. As he tells it, the camera shoots what it sees, neither true nor false. He has devoted decades to capturing what he describes as “a society in constant motion, with people on the streets keeping busy – like ‘Waiting for Godot’ – to forget that life is ending.” At 95, the artist is energetic and colorful. Receiving the Kresge Eminent Artist award, he says, is an “honor that really turns me on.” Rauhauser’s photographs have appeared in numerous exhibitions, most notably the influential Family of Man exhibition in 1955 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, at the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington and at the Detroit Institute of Arts. His photographs are currently on display in an exhibition titled “Bill Rauhauser Street Beat: Detroit Photographs c. 1950-1970,” at the Carl Hammer Gallery in Chicago.
