Running out of storyBy Michael BattagliaBack in the day, Virgin had quite the line of Doctor Who books out. Not all of them were winners and some were rather mediocre (none were super-bad but I read some that came close) but it was nice to have someone publishing Who books on a more or less regular basis. And then, apparently out of nowhere, the BBC decided that they could do a better job and yanked the license away from Virgin, ending both the Missing Adventures line (which this particular book was part of) and the Seventh Doctor focused New Adventures line. You think that none of this is relevant? Well, I'm not finished yet. The last of the Missing Adventures features the fourth Doctor, Romana (the second one, played by Lalla Ward) and the ever-cheerful K-9. Still running from the Black Guardian (don't ask) they wind up on a planet near the end of Time and quickly get wrapped up in events. -

In mutually caring closed groups and in God’s presence where participants encounter the Scriptures and their need to live a witnessing life, N12 aims for eventual habit change, ministry empowerment, and development of Christlikeness translated into culturally-relevant witnessing. Part One will begin by describing the general trend of decline in both the community and church contexts. -

After all this time anticipating her arrival true, Jodie Whittaker’s first series as the Doctor has been and gone, so we’re dedicating a lot of coverage this issue to it. We’ve got everything from reviews of the series by new president Victoria Walker, to predictions from society stalwart Ian Bayley, ratings from Francis Stojsavljevic, and even some poetry from Will Shaw. But we’re not just looking at Series Eleven. We’re looking back too, with debates on the merits of the Capaldi era, a spirited defence of The Time of the Doctor, and drifting back through the years, even a look at the Virgin New Adventures! Behind the scenes, there’s plenty of “change, my dear, and not a moment too soon!” We bid adieu to valued comrades like Peter, Francis and Alfred as new faces are welcomed onto the committee, with Victoria now helming the good ship WhoSoc, supported by new members Rory, Dahria and Ben, while familiar faces look on wistfully from the port bow. It’s also the Society’s Thirtieth Anniversary this year, which will be marked by a party in Mansfield College followed by a slap-up dinner; an event which promises to make even the most pampered Time Lord balk at its extravagance! On a personal note, it’s my last year before I graduate Oxford, at least for now, so when the next issue is out, I’ll be writing from an entirely new place. -

THE MILLENNIAL CHURCH?: DEFINING THE NEWSPRING VIRTUAL CHURCH A Thesis Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts Communication, Technology, and Society by Lauren Rose Rauchwarter May 2013 Accepted by: Dr. Travers Scott, Committee Chair Dr. Brenden Kendall Dr. Karyn Jones Abstract NewSpring Church is an interesting case study in understanding the rich complexities, which comprise a church community. Through the use of Relational Dialectics Theory, this study has found five dialectical pairs which exemplify the characteristics of the NewSpring community: Flawed/Perfect, Individual accountability/God’s responsibility, Church is faith/Faith is beyond church, Take risks/Accept destiny, Your God/Everyone’s God. These dialectics found only partially reflect the values and beliefs of the Millennial generation, providing a new wrapping on the old, traditional ideas of the church. Therefore, NewSpring needs to reflect and adapt in order to maintain its relevance and livelihood in the future. -

Buddhism BULLETIN World Religions
Interfaith Evangelism BELIEF Buddhism BULLETIN World Religions Founder: Siddhartha Gautama, a prince from northern India near modern Nepal who lived about 563-483 B.C. Scriptures: Various, but the oldest and most authoritative are compiled in the Pali Canon. Adherents: 323,894,000 worldwide; 920,000 in the United States. (Source: www.zpub.com/un/pope/rdig.html [cited 21 March 2001]) General Description: Buddhism is the belief system of those who follow the Buddha, the Enlightened One, a title given to its founder. The religion has evolved into three main schools: 1.Theravada or Southern Buddhism (38%) is followed in Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Cambodia (Kampuchea), and Vietnam. 2.Mahayana or Eastern Buddhism (56%) is strong in China, Korea, and Japan. 3.Vajrayana, or Northern Busshism (6%) is rooted in Tibet, Nepal, and Mongolia. Theravada is closest to the original doctrines. It does not treat the Buddha as deity and regards the faith as a worldview—not a type of worship. Mahayana has accommodated many different beliefs and worships the Buddha as a god. Vajrayana has added elements of shamanism and the occult and includes taboo breaking (intention- al immorality) as a means of spiritual enlightenment. Growth in the United States Core Beliefs Buddhists regard the United States as a prime mission Buddhism is an impersonal religion of self-perfection, field, and the number of Buddhists in this country is the end of which is death (extinction)—not life. The growing rapidly due to surges in Asian immigration, essential elements of the Buddhist belief system are endorsement by celebrities such as Tina Turner and summarized in the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Richard Gere, and positive exposure in major movies Eightfold Path, and several additional key doctrines. -

THE COLLECTED POEMS of HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam
1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour.
