FERRIS2 College of Engineering, University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming 82071 The subspecies of Parnassius phoebus Fabricius in North America have been in a state of confusion for a number of years. This is, in part, a result of the papers published by Bryk and Eisner in the 1930s and later by Eisner in the 1950s and 1960s. McDunnough, 1936a, b took exception to some of their work, but most of the Bryk and Eisner taxa persist. Additional names have been proposed by Bang-Haas and Wyatt. Other workers who have contributed to the nomenclature in this species include Doubleday, H. and W. H. Edwards, Holland, Neumoegen, Stichel, Wright, and several others whose taxa were sunk into synonomy by dos Passos in 1964. If forms are counted, then there are forty-four names recognized by dos Passos. Four ad¬ ditional subspecies and several form names have been proposed since completion and publication of the dos Passos checklist. Of these more than fifty names, five apply to arctic races and the remainder apply to populations associated with southwestern Canada and the western United States. In addition, Bryk and Eisner have published a number of infraspecific names not rec¬ ognized by dos Passos. At this point, one must examine taxonomic philosophy. There are “lumpers” (everything is Parnassius phoebus), “middle-of- the-roaders” (there are some valid subspecies), and “splitters” (specimen A has a spot that specimen B lacks, thus they are nomenclaturally distinct). Our European colleagues tend to be “splitters” to a greater degree than workers in the U.S. and have carried this process to extremes in some instances. Eisner, 1955b, cites ten “aberrational” names to be applied to both wings in Parnassius, twenty-seven such names to be applied to FW vari- ublished with the approval of the Director, Wyoming Agricultural Ex¬ periment Station as Journal Article no. Lepid. ations, and thirty names for HW variants. These apply to ground color, marginal fascia, spot size, color of spots, etc. and are ap¬ plied singly or in combination, e.g. Parnassius phoebus sayii form magna + quadropicta + albopicta + rubroocellata. The latter translates as a specimen of P. ph. sayii which is especially large, with four red costal spots on the FW that have white centers, and red spots on the HW. Another specimen from the same colony might not be designated “albopicta’ since its FW spots are uniformly red. The foregoing is not intended to belittle any workers, but to indicate the extremes to which nomenclature can be carried; such combinations are found frequently in the Bryk and Eisner literature. Workers in this country tend to recognize variations within a given species as originating from environmental factors, geo¬ graphic isolation, genetic variation, etc. Within given colonies of a butterfly species, there can be variations based upon the gene pool, and in multivoltine species, frequent seasonal vari¬ ations. Blend zones or tension zones are recognized in areas where populations or races overlap. When a strong character, or a group of lesser but consistent characters is recognized which reliably separate groups within a species, then subspecies may be designated. This is the general philosophy espoused by the I.C.Z.N., but the categorization stops at this point. Infraspecific names (forms, aberrations, etc.) are not recognized. In view of the variability of biological entities, this seems a wise policy. With regard to the above introduction, the intent of this paper is to attempt a rational taxonomic review of Parnassius phoebus, with particular regard to the Rocky Mountains. In¬ sufficient study material is available to review the arctic sub¬ species in detail. Several of these taxa are known only from type series housed in European museums. All are perhaps valid taxa as a consequence of extreme geographic isolation. For complete¬ ness, they are listed with their authors, dates, and type localities.

In this natural reserve, butterflies are very common and they are an important insect group as flower visitors. The butterfly species in this guide were collected from six vegetation types distributed in this tropical coastal ecosystem. The aim of this guide is to provide knowledge about the diversity of butterflies to local people, for educational proposes and ecotourism. Stavenga1 Abstract Background: Longwing butterflies, Heliconius sp., also called heliconians, are striking examples of diversity and mimicry in butterflies. Heliconians feature strongly colored patterns on their wings, arising from wing scales colored by pigments and/or nanostructures, which serve as an aposematic signal. Results: Here, we investigate the coloration mechanisms among several species of Heliconius by applying scanning electron microscopy, (micro)spectrophotometry, and imaging scatterometry. We identify seven kinds of colored scales within Heliconius whose coloration is derived from pigments, nanostructures or both. In yellow-, orange- and red-colored wing patches, both cover and ground scales contain wavelength-selective absorbing pigments, 3-OH-kynurenine, xanthommatin and/or dihydroxanthommatin. In blue wing patches, the cover scales are blue either due to interference of light in the thin-film lower lamina (e.g., H. doris) or in the multilayered lamellae in the scale ridges (so-called ridge reflectors, e.g., H. sara and H. erato); the underlying ground scales are black. In the white wing patches, both cover and ground scales are blue due to their thin-film lower lamina, but because they are stacked upon each other and at the wing substrate, a faint bluish to white color results. Lastly, green wing patches (H. doris) have cover scales with blue-reflecting thin films and short-wavelength absorbing 3-OH-kynurenine, together causing a green color.

    The genetics and evolution of iridescent structural colour in Heliconius butterflies Melanie N. Brien A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Science Department of Animal & Plant Sciences Submission Date August 2019 1 2 Abstract The study of colouration has been essential in developing key concepts in evolutionary biology. The Heliconius butterflies are well-studied for their diverse aposematic and mimetic colour patterns, and these pigment colour patterns are largely controlled by a small number of homologous genes. Some Heliconius species also produce bright, highly reflective structural colours, but unlike pigment colour, little is known about the genetic basis of structural colouration in any species. In this thesis, I aim to explore the genetic basis of iridescent structural colour in two mimetic species, and investigate its adaptive function. Using experimental crosses between iridescent and non-iridescent subspecies of Heliconius erato and Heliconius melpomene, I show that iridescent colour is a quantitative trait by measuring colour variation in offspring. I then use a Quantitative Trait Locus (QTL) mapping approach to identify loci controlling the trait in the co-mimics, finding that the genetic basis is not the same in the two species. In H. erato, the colour is strongly sex-linked, while in H. melpomene, we find a large effect locus on chromosome 3, plus a number of putative small effect loci in each species. Therefore, iridescence in Heliconius is not an example of repeated gene reuse. I then show that both iridescent colour and pigment colour are sexually dimorphic in H.

INTRODUCTION Nessaea is a small distinctive genus of colorful butterflies in the subfamily Eurytelinae. The male and female adults have a bright, turquoise blue, diagonal crossband on the dorsal forewing, and unique apple-green coloration on the ventral surfaces of the wings. The males are black above, and most species have some orange on the dorsal hindwings. The females are brownish above with a blue crossband. Striking differences in wing coloration and pattern appear to reflect a record of phylogenetic history in both species and subspecies. Nessaea and Catonephele were previously combined in the genus Epicalia, and a revision by Stichel (1899) included Nessaea and Myscelia in the genus Catonephele. Rober, in Seitz (1915), and other authors have recognized Nessaea as a separate genus. Vane-Wright (1979) revised Nessaea based on specimens in European museums. He designated lectotypes, but did not formally recognize subspecies. He presented a cladistic study based on eight wing color/pattern elements. His revision was of great value in the present study. A phylogenetic and biogeographic study of the subtribe Catonephelina (Jenkins, unpub.) indicates that it is comprised of four monophyletic genera, Catonephele, Nessaea, Myscelia and a new genus Catocelia. Cladistic analyses required morphological studies and a revision of Nessaea to allow morphological comparisons with Myscelia and Catonephele (revised by Jenkins, 1984 and 1985, respectively).

    AN ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF THE BUTTERFLIES (LEPIDOPTERA: RHOPALOCERA) OF BENTSEN-RIO GRANDE STATE VALLEY PARK AND VICINITY JUNE, 1974 Published by TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT BENTSEN-RIO GRANDE VALLEY STATE PARK P.O. 30X 988; MISSION, TEXAS 78572 INTRODUCTION The species listed here in are primarily a result of the collecting by the authors during the period 1972-1973. Certain important records of the previous several years are also included. Additionally, the checklist incorporates records of a number of other lepidopterists. The primary focus of the checklist, then, is upon recent collecting, rather than being an attempt to list all known records from the Mid-Valley area. All lepidopterists collecting in the park and vicinity are urged to send copies of their records to the authors and/or the park authorities. A number of species on the list have been taken in Hidalgo Co. but not yet within the actual confines of the park; the annotations will indicate which species these are. Some of these have been taken at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, approximately thirty miles down river, in habitats similar to those within the park. Others have been taken within several miles of the park, in nearby towns and along roadsides. These species can be reasonably expected to occur in the park, and their inclusion upon this list should alert the collector to their possible presence. The annotations have been kept necessarily brief. They are intended to aid the visiting lepidopterist in evaluating the significance of his catches. Local larval food plants are given where known. Much, however, is still to be learned regarding the life histories of even some of the commoner species.

Checklists of the butterflies (Lepidoptera) collected in two rainforest study sites in the Tuxtlas Mts., Veracruz, Mexico are presented. A total of 182 species of butterflies were recorded at Laguna Encantada, near San Andres Tuxtla, and 212 species were recorded from the nearby Estacion de Biologia Tropical “Los Tuxtlas” (EBITROLOTU). We collected 33 species not included in G. Ross’ (1975–77) faunistic treatment of the region, 12 of which are new species records for the Tuxtlas. We present a list of the skipper butterflies (Hesperioidea) of the Tuxtlas, including a state record for the giant skipper, Agathymus rethon. At both study sites, we observed seasonal patterns in species abundance during periods of reduced precipitation. Our data indicate an apparent increase in butterfly species-richness in the Tuxtlas over the last 25 years. This increase reflects more efficient sampling due to advances in lepidopteran ecology and improved collecting methods, as well as the effects of habitat disturbance. A comparison between the butterfly faunas of the two rainforest sites revealed that a higher percentage of weedy, cosmopolitan species were present at Laguna Encantada, the smaller, more disturbed site. We anticipate further changes in butterfly species-richness and faunal composition as the mosaic of habitats in the Tuxtlas continue to be modified.

Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Erebia medusa, E. epipsodea, mtDNA, COI, ND1 Abstract. The extensive genus Erebia is divided into several groups of species according to phylogenetic relatedness. The species Erebia medusa was assigned to the medusa group and E. epipsodea to the alberganus group. A detailed study of the morphology of their copulatory organs indicated that these species are closely related and based on this E. epipsodea was transferred to the medusa group. Phylogenetic analyses of the gene sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (COI) and mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1) confirm that E. medusa and E. epipsodea are closely related. A possible scenario is that the North American species, E. episodea, evolved after exclusion/isolation from E. medusa, whose current centre of distribution is in Europe.
