Forty-two traps were used to attract fruit-feeding butterflies, divided between Cerrado (rupestrian field) and riparian vegetation, monthly over one year. 2245 butterflies, which belonged to 63 species, were recorded. -

In view of the importance of sampling these areas, the present study conducted the first butterfly inventory of a coastal area in the state of Paraná. Samples were taken in the Floresta Estadual do Palmito, from February 2014 through January 2015, using insect nets and traps for fruit-feeding butterfly species. A total of 200 species were recorded, in the families Hesperiidae (77), Nymphalidae (73), Riodinidae (20), Lycaenidae (19), Pieridae (7) and Papilionidae (4). Particularly notable records included the rare and vulnerable Pseudotinea hemis (Schaus, 1927), representing the lowest elevation record for this species, and Temenis huebneri korallion Fruhstorfer, 1912, a new record for Paraná. These results reinforce the need to direct sampling efforts to poorly inventoried areas, to increase knowledge of the distribution and occurrence patterns of butterflies in Brazil. Checklists of the butterflies (Lepidoptera) collected in two rainforest study sites in the Tuxtlas Mts., Veracruz, Mexico are presented. A total of 182 species of butterflies were recorded at Laguna Encantada, near San Andres Tuxtla, and 212 species were recorded from the nearby Estacion de Biologia Tropical “Los Tuxtlas” (EBITROLOTU). We collected 33 species not included in G. Ross’ (1975–77) faunistic treatment of the region, 12 of which are new species records for the Tuxtlas. We present a list of the skipper butterflies (Hesperioidea) of the Tuxtlas, including a state record for the giant skipper, Agathymus rethon. At both study sites, we observed seasonal patterns in species abundance during periods of reduced precipitation. Our data indicate an apparent increase in butterfly species-richness in the Tuxtlas over the last 25 years. This increase reflects more efficient sampling due to advances in lepidopteran ecology and improved collecting methods, as well as the effects of habitat disturbance. A comparison between the butterfly faunas of the two rainforest sites revealed that a higher percentage of weedy, cosmopolitan species were present at Laguna Encantada, the smaller, more disturbed site. We anticipate further changes in butterfly species-richness and faunal composition as the mosaic of habitats in the Tuxtlas continue to be modified. -

INTRODUCTION Revision of a series of genera of neotropical nymphalid butterflies is providing the basis for phylogenetic, biological and distributional studies, as well as allowing accurate identification of species and subspecies. Revisions published are Hamadryas Jenkins (1983) and Myscelia Jenkins (1984). Nine additional genera are under study. The genus Catonephele contains eighteen taxa including eleven species and seven subspecies of medium-sized neotropical butterflies. The wings of the males all have a velvety black background with bright orange, broad bold markings. The females are very different with a blackish background with most species having narrow yellow stripes and many small yellow maculae. Female C. sabrina have a large diffuse rusty brown area on the forewings and C. numilia have black forewings with a yellow diagonal median cross band, and the hind wing black, or with a rust-orange or rust-mahogany discus. The 9 wing pattern of C. nyctimus is almost identical with primitive 9 Mys celia and some 9 Catonephele were formerly included in Myscelia. The marked sexual dimorphism has resulted in several of the females being described with different names from the males with resulting synonyms. This was discovered by Bates (1864) who first correlated some males and females. An error by ROber, in Seitz (1914) showing a male specimen of C. -

YOUNG Invertebrate Zoology Section, Milwaukee Public Museum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53233 ABSTRACT. The early stages and a larval food plant are reported for the first time for Taygetis andromeda (Cramer), as studied in eastern Costa Rica. Various aspects of larval and adult behavior, including feeding and egg-placement, are also discussed for this widespread Central American satyrid. The larval food plant is a grass, Acroceras zizanioides (Graminae). Taygetis andromeda (Cramer) is a common butterfly (Fig. 1) of forest and old secondary habitats from 0 to 1500 m on the Pacific and Caribbean watersheds of Costa Rica (A. M. Young, pers. obs.; P. J. DeVries, pers. comm.). The butterfly is also widespread throughout much of Central America and South America. It is one of four species of Taygetis reported from Central America, along with different species in Mexico, Central America, and South America which often exhibit distinctive patterns of range separation by habitat and elevation (Ross, 1976; Ebert, 1969; Lamas, 1967; P. J. DeVries, pers. comm.). While some fragmentary information on the early stages of South American Taygetis other than andromeda exist (Muller, 1886; d' Almeida, 1922), the present paper constitutes the first report of early stages and larval food plant for T. andromeda. METHODS The majority of observations were made at two localities on the Caribbean or Atlantic watershed of eastern Costa Rica: "Finca La Tigra," near La Virgen (lO0 2S'N, 84°07'W; 220 m elev.), Heredia Prov ince (described as "premontane tropical wet forest"); "Finca Experi mental La Lola," near Siquirres (100 06'N, 8soS0'W; SO m elev.), Limon Province (described as "lowland tropical wet forest"). -

I felt a need to put my thoughts into words and my means of escapism from day to day reality, my pictures and passion for natural history, into something that would last and hopefully act as a light at the end of the tunnel in times of difculty to the reader - my children. The content of the book is for my son and daughter only though the cover I am willing to share. I decided to post this in my diary as putting the book together has helped me through difcult times and I hope it may inspire others to do the same. Here's to a good 2012 ...
