Frank, Botanist, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry INTRODUCTION: The perennial, emergent aquatic plant, Nymphoides cristata (Roxb.) Kuntze (Menyanthaceae), has been added to the Florida Noxious Weed and Invasive Species List. This plant was proposed for listing and evidence was presented to the Noxious Weed Review Committee. Numerous ecological studies and weed assessments by the USDA and the University of Florida provided information. Invasive plant managers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and South Florida Water Management District are currently trying to control the spread of this plant. Crested floating heart is an aggressive pest plant that develops dense mats and quickly covers lakes and ponds.This species is documented as naturalized in eight counties in Florida and is also listed by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council as an invasive species that has altered natural plant communities. The committee found that the species exhibited the following invasive characteristics: • vegetative reproduction from plant fragments, bulbils and tubers • rapid colonization of fresh water bodies • persistent roots, rhizomes and leaf fragments make control extremely difficult • easily spread by boat traffic Mats of N. cristata reduce or eliminate the light required by native plant species below the water surface, and thereby eliminate these plants from the water column. -

100 Cold Hardy Trees, Perennials, and Shrubs for Kittitas County Prepared By Hilary Foss, Master Gardener Coordinator Patrice Andersen, Master Gardener Mary Vathauer, Master Gardener 100 Cold Hardy Trees, Perennials, and Shrubs for Kittitas County Gardeners in Kittitas County face unique challenges. Cold winters and hot, dry summers, and lots of wind create a tough gardening climate. Additionally, our county contains a wide range of eco-systems, with varying soils, soil pH, rainfall, and plant communities. At higher elevations such as Cle Elum (1,930 feet), the average growing season is 90 to 120 days with last frosts in late May (approximately May 24 th ) and first frosts in the middle of September (approximately September 11th ). Cle Elum receives about 22” of rain on average. At lower elevations such as Ellensburg, conditions are much drier and frost-free days are longer. The average growing season in Ellensburg is about 120 days with last frosts in early May (May 11 th ) and first frosts around the end of September (approximately September 25 th ). Kittitas County is rated at USDA Zone 5 (-20 °F. minimum). Our tough climate with varying conditions can be baffling to first time gardeners, who are new to the area. A frequent question at our Master Gardener plant diagnostic clinic is “What can I grow here in Kittitas County?” This brochure is designed to help answer that question, listing trees, shrubs, and perennials that are suitable for this area. Appendix 11.5.1: Aquatic Vascular Plant Species Distribution Maps These distribution maps are for 116 aquatic vascular macrophyte species (Table 1). Aquatic designation follows habitat descriptions in Haines and Vining (1998), and includes submergent, floating and some emergent species. See Appendix 11.4 for list of species. Also included in Appendix 11.4 is the number of HUC-10 watersheds from which each taxon has been recorded, and the county-level distributions. Data are from nine sources, as compiled in the MABP database (plus a few additional records derived from ancilliary information contained in reports from two fisheries surveys in the Upper St. John basin organized by The Nature Conservancy). With the exception of the University of Maine herbarium records, most locations represent point samples (coordinates were provided in data sources or derived by MABP from site descriptions in data sources). The herbarium data are identified only to township. In the species distribution maps, town-level records are indicated by center-points (centroids). Figure 1 on this page shows as polygons the towns where taxon records are identified only at the town level. Athyrium Niponicum 'Pictum'
A Horticulture Information article from the Wisconsin Master Gardener website, posted 30 Jan 2004 Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’ The Perennial Plant Association has named Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’ the 2004 Perennial Plant of the Year. This perennial low-maintenance Japanese painted fern is one of the showiest ferns for shade gardens. It is popular due to its hardiness nearly everywhere in the United States, except in the desert and northernmost areas in zone 3. ‘Pictum’ grows 18 inches tall and as it multiplies can make a clump that is more than two feet wide. ‘Pictum’ produces 12- to 18-inch fronds that are a soft shade of metallic silver-gray with hints of red and blue. This lovely fern, which prefers partial to full shade, makes an outstanding combination plant for adding color, texture, and habit to landscape beds and containers. Landscape Uses The magnifi cent texture and color of the fronds electrify shady areas of the garden and make the fern a wonderful companion for a variety of shade plants. Japanese painted fern provides a nice contrast to other shade-loving perennials such as hosta, bleeding heart, columbine, Fronds of Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’ astilbe and coral bells. A popular combination is Japanese painted fern with Hosta ‘Patriot’ and ‘Ginko Craig’. For something different, try Hosta sieboldiana ‘Elegans’. Another friendly companion plant for the Japanese painted fern is Tiarella (foam fl ower). One of the most unique possibilities is to use this fern with sedges. Carex (sedges) are shade-loving, easy-to-grow grasslike plants. Try Carex morrowii ‘Variegata’ or Carex siderosticha ‘Silver Sceptre’. -

Drivers of Macrophyte Assemblages in South African Freshwater Systems THESIS Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY at Rhodes University By Grant Douglas Martin January 2013 i Abstract Abstract Potentially damaging submerged invasive freshwater macrophytes have been identified in South African freshwater systems, but have received less attention than their floating counterparts. To ascertain the changes and effects that these species may have on macrophyte ecology, an understanding of the drivers of macrophyte assemblages is essential. The aims of this thesis were to investigate select abiotic and biotic factors driving introduction, establishment and spread of submerged macrophytes in South Africa. Surveys on the status of submerged plant species in South Africa were conducted to find out the distribution and diversity of the species present, imported to, and traded in South Africa. Numerous submerged indigenous and invasive macrophyte locality records were collected during field surveys, of which many were first time records. Pet stores and aquarist trading activities were identified as potential vectors for the spread of submerged macrophytes through online surveys and personal interviews. These results highlighted the potential these species have for continuing to enter, and spread within South African water bodies. Maximum Entropy (MAXENT) is a general-purpose method used to predict or infer distributions from incomplete information, and was used here to predict areas suitable for the establishment of five of these invasive macrophytes. Many systems throughout South Africa, particularly those in the subtropical coastal regions, were found to be climatically suitable for the establishment of Elodea canadensis Michx., Egeria densa Planch., Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle (all Hydrocharitaceae), Myriophyllum spicatum L. -

Southeastern Europe, river ecology. One record is located in the Mediterranean Region, in Butoniga Reservoir, while the remaining records are from the Continental Region, the majority of them Ključne besede: umetno jezero situated along the Kupa River. Prior to our research, the species was recorded in Croatia only twice, with the older record dating back to the 19th century and the second from recent years, but neither one was confirmed in later surveys. The low number of records of V. spiralis, in spite of a wide-ranging search through hundreds of localities, confirmed the rare status of this species, although the reasons for such limited distribution remain unclear, especially bearing in mind that suitable aquatic habitats are quite widespread in the country.
