His 1944, 1945, Idaho 1, Navy 1. and 1946 teams were national champions. Temple was coached by Ray Morrison.

In 1987, Jim Young coached Army to an ambush of Bruce Arians’ Temple squad. The 2009 opponents in bold score was tied, 7-7, at halftime, and the Cadets opened the second half running. They finished with 75 rushes in 76 plays for the game. However, on their fourth play of the half, QB Otto Leone caught Temple over-playing the run. He faked a handoff and hit TE Mark Charette for a 64-yard touchdown pass. It would be the key play of the game as the Owls were not able to score aside from Tom Quinn’s two-yard run in the first half. Quinn rushed for 144 yards on 29 carries. The teams combined for just 12 passing attempts on the afternoon.

Beginning with the 1999 season, Army changed its nickname from the Cadets to the Black Knights.

TEMPLE-EMU POSTGAME NOTES • With the win, Temple captured its fifth consecutive MAC home victory and in- creased its league-leading home field record to 8-2 (since TU joined the MAC in 2007). That year, the Owls opened the season at 3-2.

• Temple opened play in the MAC at 3-0 for the first time ever and opened conference play with two threes for the first time since 1967. That season the Owls went a per- fect 4-0 in league play en route to the Middle Atlantic Conference championship.

• Freshman RB Bernard Pierce rushed for more than 100 yards for the third consec- utive game, the first freshman in school history to achieve that feat. He finished with 125 yards on 25 carries. FRESHMAN ACTION After playing the most freshmen in 2006 and 2007, Temple is fielding a team of up- perclassmen this fall. But some of the younger players have already seen game action. DENNIS OUT FOR THE SEASON Junior OL Derek Dennis (Peekskill, N.Y.) will miss the remainder of the 2009 season and is expected to redshirt. He suffered a season-ending knee injury that requires surgery.

IN THE AIR R-sophomore RB/WR Joe Jones (Davie, Fla.) has emerged as the team leader with 190 yards on 14 receptions. In the win at EMU, Jones made two catches for eight yards. In the win over Buffalo, he had a 22-yard reception. At No. 5 Penn State, he led all receivers with 75 yards on four catches.

Junior Michael Campbell (Edison, N.J.) follows with 162 yards and a touchdown on 11 catches. Campbell led the Owls with four catches for 35 yards in the win over Ball State. He had five receptions for 93 yards, including a 44-yard catch, and a touch- down, all career highs, against Villanova.

Senior Jason Harper (Budd Lake, N.J.) is third with 138 yards on eight receptions. He led the receivers with 83 yards in the win at Eastern Michigan.
