This collection represents a new host record for L. atrox and the first record of H. pagrosomi from E. tumifrons in Japan. The hosts and geographical distribution of these copepods are also reviewed. Key words: Copepoda, Evynnis tumifrons, fish parasite, Hatschekia pagrosomi, Hiroshima Bay, Lernanthropus atrox INTRODUCTION Sparids are widely distributed and commercially caught in coastal temperate and subtropical waters of Japan, where they consist of 13 species in three subfamilies and four genera (Nakabo, 2013). Of these species, red seabream, Pagrus major (Temminck and Schlegel, 1843), is the most important species in fisheries and abundantly caught in various waters of Japan. The parasite fauna of this species has been well studied in Japan: for example, as many as 24 species of metazoan parasitic helminths (3 monogeneans, 13 digneans, 4 cestodes, 3 nametodes, and 1 acanthocephalan) were reported only by Dr. -

LAL MOHAN** Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Cochin 682 031 ABSTRACT Hie sciaenid fishery of the Indian Ocean is reviewed. Coastal areas of the Indian Ocean are divided into various geographical zones such as east coast of Africa, Red Sea, Arabian and Persian Coast, Pakistan and Indian Coast, Burma and west coast of Malaya, west coast of Indonesia and the western coast of Australia. Hie sciaenid fish landings of each zone is studied. 34 species of sciaenid fishes are considered commercially important among the 48 species of sciaenids occurring in the Indian Ocean. Species composition of the sciaenid fishes in each of the above zone is discussed in detail. The landings of each species is estimated and tabulated. The total landing of the sciaenids in the Indian Ocean is estimated to be about 198,480 tonnes. OtoUthes cmieri is considered to be the most abundant sciaenid forming about 14% (27,5331) of the sciaenid landing of the Indian Ocean. The next important species was Pterotolithes lateoides with 12.7% (25,464 t). The northwest coast of India was the most productive area for the sciaenids contributing about 26% of the sciaenid catch of the Indian Ocean, Burma Coast was also another rich area accounting 16.0% of the catch. Unfortunately, marine zooplankton biodiversity is not well known because of difficult morphological identifications and lack of taxonomic experts for many groups. In addition, the large taxonomic diversity present in plankton and low sampling coverage pose challenges in obtaining a better understanding of true zooplankton diversity. Molecular identification tools, like DNA barcoding, have been successfully used to identify marine planktonic specimens to a species. However, the behaviour of methods for specimen identification and species delimitation remain untested for taxonomically diverse and widely-distributed marine zooplanktonic groups. Using Canadian marine planktonic crustacean collections, I generated a multi-gene data set including COI-5P and 18S-V4 molecular markers of morphologically-identified Copepoda and Thecostraca (Multicrustacea: Hexanauplia) species. I used this data set to assess generalities in the genetic divergence patterns and to determine if a barcode gap exists separating interspecific and intraspecific molecular divergences, which can reliably delimit specimens into species. I then used this information to evaluate the North Pacific, Arctic, and North Atlantic biogeography of marine Calanoida (Hexanauplia: Copepoda) plankton. -

A total of 1656 fish species under two classes, 40 orders, 191 families and 683 geranra reported from marine and estuarine waters of Tamil Nadu. In the checklist, 1075 fish species were primary marine water and remaining 581 species were diadromus. In total, 128 species were reported under class Elasmobranchii (11 orders, 36 families and 70 genera) and 1528 species under class Actinopterygii (29 orders, 155 families and 613 genera). The top five order with diverse species composition were Perciformes (932 species; 56.29% of the total fauna), Tetraodontiformes (99 species), Pleuronectiforms (77 species), Clupeiformes (72 species) and Scorpaeniformes (69 species). At the family level, the Gobiidae has the greatest number of species (86 species), followed by the Carangidae (65 species), Labridae (64 species) and Serranidae (63 species). Fishery status assessment revealed existence of 1029 species worth for capture fishery, 425 species worth for aquarium fishery, 84 species worth for culture fishery, 242 species worth for sport fishery and 60 species worth for bait fishery.
