I am also Research 8 personally celebrating my fifth and final year as dean of the college and looking forward to retirement beginning September 2014. I must say it Celebrating 75 Years 10 has been wonderful working with our dedicated faculty and staff who provide our students one of the best educational experiences in higher Arabian Horse Center 22 education. Looking back over my past 37 years of academic service to Cal Poly Pomona and the College of Agriculture, I find it most gratifying New Faculty & Staff 25 to look upon all the positive changes and advances this institution has gone through. The College of Agriculture has emerged over the past five Retirements 26 years of nearly devastating budget cuts to become fiscally stronger, more program-focused and facing a much brighter future than when I took In Memoriam 27 the position as dean in 2008. Our instructional farm budget is balanced, more sustainable and environmentally responsible while still providing students our signature hands-on experiential education. Our faculty have COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE Achievements 28 recently been awarded over $1.2 million in USDA/HSI grants, nearly DEAN’S COUNCIL $1 million in ARI matching fund grants and a new $500,000 grant in Planting a Legacy 32 Renewable Energy, Natural Resources and Environment from the federal Dale Stern government.

This has been a journey that encompasses learning, not just about Arabian horses, but the cultures and history of each country and the people involved with this magnificent crea- ture.     The British Museum exhibition The Horse: Ancient Arabia to the Modern World The British Museum, London 24th May – 30th September 2012 Free admission or the very first time the British F Museum is holding an exhibition devoted to the horse, with a display tracing the animal’s story across thousands of years of human history. The free exhibition, which opened in May and runs until the end of September, is timed to coincide with the Olympic Games, but is also conceived as a Diamond Jubilee present to The Queen, a celebrated horse breeder. The exhibition ranges from a stylised figure which decorated a 3,000 year old harness, to the Georgian thoroughbreds by Anne BrownPhotograph Hambletonian and Diamond, immortalised on a gambler’s gaming chip – appropriately since Hambletonian won a staggering 3,000 guinea prize when he beat Diamond by a short head at Newmarket in 1799. The wild horse was domesticated at least 5,000 years ago and probably far earlier, initially for meat and later for transport, transforming how far man could travel and how much he could carry. The exhibition traces the evolution of the elegant, swift Arabian horses, associated in legend with King Solomon and The Prophet Muhammad. They selected breeding stock carefully to be sound, agile, and loyal. These traits served the horses well in the harsh desert conditions and during frequent wars. B. Kellogg Arabian Horse Ranch was established in 1925 in Pomona, California by cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg to fulfill his long-held dream of breeding Arabian horses. The ranch served as Kellogg's winter home until 1932, when he donated the horses and property to the University of California. The University operated the ranch as the W.K. Kellogg Institute of Animal Husbandry until 1943 when the ranch was transferred to the United States government for use by the United State Army Remount Service. The Army operated the ranch as the Pomona Quartermaster Depot (Remount) and bred horses for the cavalry.
