Hardy 3 April 2015 Hardy 2 Liberty University College of Arts and Sciences Master of Arts in English ________________________________________________________________________ Carl Curtis, Ph.D. Date Thesis Chair ________________________________________________________________________ Mark Harris, Ph.D. Date Committee Member ________________________________________________________________________ Brian Melton, Ph.D. Date Committee Member Hardy 3 Abstract Doctor Who is a long-running, incredibly popular work of television science-fiction, with a devoted fanbase across the Western world. Like all science fiction, it deals with the weighty questions posed by the culture around it, particularly in regards to ethics, politics, faith/belief, and the idea of the soul. These concepts are dealt with through the lens of the Secular Humanist ideology held by the showrunners and by many of the people who watch the show; however, in many areas, elements of the Christian worldview seep through. The conflict between these two worldviews has serious ramifications for the show itself, as it prevents the titular main character from being able to be a traditional, identifiable hero and pushes him ever close to the realm of the anti-hero. This thesis uses Joseph Campbell’s idea of the monomyth, or universal hero’s journey, to provide a framework in which to explore how Christian precepts in the show aid the Doctor in his heroic journey; how Secular Humanist ideologies draw him away from that path; and finally, how the resulting contradictions create an anti-hero who no longer represents the heroic ideal he is supposed to uphold.

“Words Win Wars”: Relatedness, Alterity and the Function of Dialogue in Doctor Who Literary Studies English Language and Culture MA Thesis Lenneke Maan s0954500 9th of July 2014 First Reader: Dr. Michael Newton Second Reader: Dr. Evert-Jan van Leeuwen Maan 1 Little Boy: “Are you afraid of monsters?” Doctor: “No. They're afraid of me.” Maan 2 Acknowledgements / First Things First, But Not Necessarily In That Order First and foremost, I would like to thank Michael Newton and Evert van Leeuwen, for making my scholarly education into an all the more bearable, and even – dare I say – unambiguously fun process. Without your tips and guidance, I would never have thought of writing a 30-page poem, or understood that it is not at all academically frowned upon to write a master's thesis about ones favourite television programme. Moreover, I would like to thank them for being so human; your demonstrating that (for example) one can be a university professor while being a drummer in a band and/or so absent-minded that one turns up for class wearing odd shoes (yes, I did notice) has been wholly invaluable. Also, I would like to thank my mum Ellen for the loving near-endless supply of cups of coffee and tea, my friends Lianne, Linda and Robert for both much-needed distractions as well as listening and pretending to have an idea what it is I am going on about, and Shereen for the shared moaning and critical reflection on writing our theses. • Acting for Auntie: from Studio Realism to Location Realism in Bbc Television Drama, 1953-2008
ACTING FOR AUNTIE: FROM STUDIO REALISM TO LOCATION REALISM IN BBC TELEVISION DRAMA, 1953-2008 RICHARD HEWETT, MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy DECEMBER 2012 Abstract Acting for television has hitherto been a much-neglected field; by focusing solely on screen performance, usually via textual analysis, the small amount of work thus far conducted has largely ignored the various conditioning factors that combine to shape it. This thesis is designed to address that lack, drawing on a combination of archive research, original interviews and textual analysis to provide a multi-perspectival, historical overview of acting in British television drama, spanning the live era to the present day. The programmes selected as case studies herein derive from historically distinct production contexts: namely, the live drama of The Quatermass Experiment (BBC, 1953); the ‘as live’, pre-recorded videotape of Doctor Who (BBC, 1963-89); and the move to Outside Broadcast location work, utilising a ‘rehearse/record’ process, on the first series of Survivors (BBC, 1975-77). The fact that each programme has since been re-made in the 2000s allows for both a comparative study and a chronological development of television acting. The significance for acting of the shift from multi-camera studio to single camera location work is represented here by the models of studio realism and location realism. However, the physical site of performance is just one of several determinants that are examined throughout. Actor experience, technology, drama training and production process together comprise a complex set of variables that are in a constant state of flux.

Doctor Who DRAMA Series 3 Series Premieres: 19 August 2007 on PRIME Introduction The hugely successful science-fiction series returns with a brand-new companion for David Tennant’s popular Time Lord. Fans of Billie Piper were as devastated as the Doctor to lose Rose at the end of Series 2, but newcomer Freema Agyeman is fast gaining an enthusiastic following as Martha Jones, a smart, sassy and sexy medical student who encounters the Doctor when her present-day London hospital is transported to the moon. Viewers have already met the Freema as Adeola in Army of Ghosts (Episode 12, Series 2) but this character suffered a terrible fate at the hands of the Cybermen. Martha Jones is a brand new character. Executive producer/writer Russell T Davies says: “The search for a new companion had been underway for some time when I first saw Freema Agyeman. She had come in to audition for the part of Adeola in Series 2. “Watching her during filming confirmed what an exciting new talent she was, so, under cover of darkness, we called her back in to audition with David for the role of the new companion. It was an immediate and sensational combination, and her range, presence and charm blew us all away. “David and Freema are terrific together, and we’re delighted to have chosen her to join the Doctor for more adventures in time and space … Martha’s a brilliant addition to the TARDIS crew, the perfect foil for the Doctor. Freema Agyeman says: “Auditioning with David in secret down in Cardiff was unbelievable, but I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d actually become the new companion.
