METHODIST CHURCH (www.brentknollmethodistchurch.com) Minister Revd. Steve Bennett Happy New Year! No - I haven’t had too much sun (chance would be a fine thing as at the time of writing it's still August and it's tipping it down). But September marks the beginning of the new church year and to celebrate it, we have decided to do something different here at the Methodist Chapel. On the last Sunday of each month, we are going to have an informal time of fellowship together enjoying cake, refreshments, singing and activities. We hope this will be a time where villagers of all ages who may not be able to come to church on a Sunday morning are able to come and join us at a different time. These times of fellowship will be following the themes of the season and this month, we shall be meeting up on Sunday 29th September at 4pm in the school room to celebrate all things harvest. Do come along and enjoy the fun and fellowship. We shall be celebrating our traditional harvest festival on Sunday 15th September at 10.30am. The church will be decorated with local produce, which shall be distributed around various charities in the area following the service. All donated tinned goods will be donated to the Foodbank. The service will be followed up by a shared lunch together to which all are welcome. Margaret Trapp will continue to lead our ecumenical time of fellowship on the first Monday of each month. We shall meet up on Monday 2nd September at 2.30pm in the church. And again, all, of course, are welcome to join us. A big thank you to all who supported our August coffee mornings. At the time of writing, we have not held them all, so I am unable to let you know the amount of monies raised for charity. I will let you know the amounts next month - but a big thank you in advance to all who have helped raise money for these much needed causes. In the meantime, it’s all change for our young people as they start school, change schools or move up a class. Our thoughts and our prayers are very much with them all at this challenging yet exciting time in their lives. From all of us at Brent Knoll Methodist Church, we wish you every blessing. Rosemary Krull Preachers for September at 10.30am 1st September : Rev Stanley Pipet (Holy Communion) 8th September : Mr Len Horlock 15th September : Rev Steve Bennett (Harvest Festival) 22nd September : Own arrangement 29th September : Mr Chris Luker Toddlers Can’t wait to hear what our toddlers have been up to during the Summer holidays when we return for the start of the new term on Tuesday 10th September. We all had great fun on our Summer outing to Court Farm, enjoying the milking demonstration and tractor rides as well as meeting some horses, Shetland ponies, pigs and donkeys. We will be thinking of Alice and Summer as they start school in September. Looking forward to seeing everyone else on 10th. Jane

A time for grace and patience September is the month when schools go back, harvest services are being planned, and the College of Bishops takes place. Yippee! Actually I’m not being sarcastic. Of course there’s always a sense of this is a month when many of us feel ‘back at work’. It can seem a busy month with lots to challenge us. However, we do have some agency in how we approach the tasks of daily living, don’t we? So, for instance, at the College of Bishops this month, we shall do more work on ‘Living in Love and Faith’, the theology, social anthropology, biblical scholarship and scientific knowledge being considered as the Church reflects on issues of human identity, sexuality and marriage. I’m looking forward to it. And that’s not being sarcastic either. You see, it is not that this will be an easy topic, something which we can just all agree to but rather it will be an opportunity to meet together with one another in the presence of God. We will no doubt have some difficult conversations, grapple over imponderables, find ourselves feeling vulnerable, but this is the stuff of life, and seeking to find God’s way in a world which has little time for religious faith anymore. The College meets in an Oxford college over a few days and it can sometimes seem rather distant from the everyday world in which we live. However, we always celebrate Holy Cross day while we are there. The Collect for that day reminds us that “the passion of thy blessed Son hast made an instrument of painful death to be for us the means of life and peace”. That surely means that life and peace can be found even through the experience of pain and death. In fact sometimes it’s the only way to find them. Dealing with complex issues, tackling challenging tasks, is not about finding the easiest and quickest route to an answer. Sometimes it requires much more from us and we need the grace and patience of the Christ who made Himself a sacrifice for us. The following is the prayer we use on Holy Cross Day after we receive bread and wine together: perhaps we need to use it more as we face the challenge of seeking to live as men and women of God in His world today. “O faithful God, whose Son bore our sins in his body on the tree and gave us this sacrament to show forth his death until he come: give us grace to glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, for he is our salvation, our life and our hope.” The Rt Revd Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton Our Choir needs YOU! Bring your friends too. Our choir is recruiting new members, particularity Basses and Tenors. There are NO auditions, and you’ll make lots of new friends. So why not free up Thursday evenings and join our friendly choir for a good sing. The Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society’s Spring term starts on 5th September 2019 in the Methodist Church hall, College Street, Burnham at 7.20pm. This term we will be learning Christmas music from various composers, including Handel and Elgar, in preparation to sing at our Christmas concert on Thursday 12th December 2019. There are no auditions. We welcome anyone who loves to sing quality choral music. All music will be provided, and help will be on hand if you need it. The first three weeks are completely free, so why not come along and sing with others who enjoy music. Our Spring concert is on Saturday 25th April 2020 in St Andrew’s Church, B-o-S. Any question or queries email our secretary via our New website. www.burnhamandhighbridgechoral.org.uk or phone 01278 783511. Julie Skinner

Save Our Special ceiling - St Michael’s Church appeal….and lead theft It never rains but it pours. Just as we were getting into our stride and making significant inroads into our target of £15,000 for our lead roof repair, we suffered a major blow. On August 5th we lost our North aisle lead roof to theft. Unfortunately the rain did pour in and the North aisle was inundated. Our vicar, Kevin Wright, acted swiftly. Our insurers were informed and within a day a temporary covering was installed. Members of our congregation have cleared up and we are now drying out. Particular thanks must go to Frances James, who was on hand to do most of the manual work shifting what was necessary away from the deluge. As I write, we are looking at ways of ensuring our project remains on track. The temporary cover is keeping the worst of the rain out but we have to make sure that the roof is watertight for the Winter. We are hoping to obtain grant funding for this work, and we still have to make sure that as much grant funding as possible is available for the actual releading work that is scheduled for next Spring. We have received a setback when our initial application for funding was rejected but this simply means that we shall have to revise our grant funding strategy, and redouble our efforts in this direction. Just to recap briefly, our Appeal is directed towards protecting our beautiful and unique wooden carved ceiling in the North aisle, which was erected around 1480. The ceiling has 96 panels that are all carved differently, 24 angels and 6 roof bosses. The appeal is based on sponsoring these parts of the ceiling. If we succeed in sponsoring all the parts we will raise our target sum of £15,000. To date we have received £7,500, exactly half of what we require. I would like to thank those who have contributed so far. All roof bosses have been sponsored and over half the angels. Twenty four panels are spoken for. We need to continue in the same vein and ensure we reach our target by the end of the year. An Appeal letter and form was circulated to every household in Brent Knoll in June. I can quite understand that this form may have, for whatever reason, gone missing. So please look in your pending file, dig out the form and complete it! If you can’t find it a replacement can be obtained from Caroline at the Village Shop, or from the church. It may appear that the sum of money we are seeking in individual sponsorship of a Panel (£100) is quite large. We want to make it quite clear that we welcome any contribution, however small. A number of Community Panels will be set up and smaller contributions will go towards sponsoring these. So, do bear in mind that “Every Little Helps”. There will also be a number of fundraising events during the rest of the year, which will be advertised in the Brent Knoll News and by poster. Brian Freestone presents ‘A Night at the Movies’ on Saturday September 14th; there is a musical concert, ‘Raise the Roof’, at St Michael’s on Saturday October 5th and a Medieval Feast in the church on Saturday November 16th. And finally, watch out for St Michael’s Angel Ale. We are taking a leaf out of the medieval church wardens “fundraising manual”, and obtaining a special labelled brew, which will be on sale at the Parish Hall Bazaar, and our fundraising events. Ged Keele, Coordinator, Friends of St Michael’s Church Packed Lunches In an effort to support our village shop, I made an arrangement with Caroline to supply my packed lunch. I have had the pleasure of eating the most delightful sandwiches – tasty, fresh and filling. The advantages of less food waste at home, extra time and not having to worry about lunch have been a bonus. The assortment of wonderful assortment of sandwiches has been quite a revelation and a gastronomic surprise. Equally, for the Summer, I have switched to very tasty salads. By far better than the average supermarket sarnie and cost wise cheaper. Really worth having a chat with Caroline. SEPTEMBER BRENT KNOLL NEWS 1616

The June meeting day had dry weather! After what seemed like weeks of rain, this was a pleasant surprise and not the only surprise of the day. Mrs Jean Ticknell was booked to give a talk and duly turned up on the correct day and at the correct time. What was the surprise? We were expecting a talk entitled “Glastonbury Festival” but Jean had come prepared for, what I think was called, “Our Farm”. The Ticknell farm is a dairy farm of some 700 acres and 250 milking cows. There were some facts and figures but the talk was very entertaining and I am looking forward to her return when she will present “Glastonbury Festival”. Numbers were a little down on normal, which could explain why so much food was left at the end. I could not find fault in the quality and believe me, I tried everything! The July meeting was not held at the Parish Hall but was a Garden Party held at Briarfield. Although the day started dry, we were slightly inconvenienced during the afternoon by three very light showers. Being a hardy bunch, we did not let a small problem such as a little precipitation spoil the afternoon and we just partied through it. On arrival, all of the members were persuaded to join in an Ice-Breaker game of “Who Am I” with one member identifying their identity within moments, whilst others required most of the afternoon. It threw up some interesting suggestions and I think everyone enjoyed it. For once I am not able to say that we had the usual raffle as this one was free, though some generous individuals did try to make a payment! We also had one of Chris’ fiendish quizzes, but with two groups tying on 14 points out of 30, it cannot have been that bad, there were just a few questions to which no-one knew the answer. Numbers were a little down on normal, one member being very poorly and no doubt others on holiday, but we enjoyed the usual raffle and refreshments with me indulging in a little too much cake! The next meetings are as follows:- 2019 September 18th - Mr Peter Blund Prison Education and Training October 16th - Mr John Strickland Lifeboats November 20th - Christmas Fayre We are a friendly group and welcome visitors and new members, preferably over the age of 18. We meet at 2.30pm in the Parish Hall on the third Wednesday of every month. For further information contact Karen Russell on 769382 or Ann Robson on 760981. CGR WI Craft Group We will meet at 2.30pm on Monday September 16th in the Methodist Church school room. We are a small friendly group which likes to knit or craft, chatter and have a cuppa. We have been pleased to welcome new ladies to our group and it has been interesting to see what they have achieved in their crafting. We are continuing to knit hats and scarves for Mission to Seafarers, as well as blankets for premature babies. You don’t have to be a WI member to join us. We would love anyone who does craft of any kind or who would like to learn to join us, we also love seeing what others are doing. For further details please contact me on 01278 760691. Brent Knoll House Histories European Heritage Year 1975 W. I. Book – 34 Continuing with a little more about the war-time period, Peter Sandy related how he had been in the Home Guard prior to 1942, when he got his call-up papers. Archie Fay of the Red Cow was in charge of the Home Guard and they did quite a bit of drilling, but also had to look after the Waterworks on the hill once a week. Apparently Archie Fay had been in the cavalry, presumably during the First World War. Various reports were given of some of the regulars of the Red Cow. Mac Rich reported that Ralph senior (Mac’s dad) was known for his morning daily journey (Sundays excepted) to the Red Cow in his pony and cart, returning in time for his lunch. However, he did always check his stock first. Perhaps the one I like best, though, came from Tony Steer who recalled that the policeman was over six feet tall [I seem to recall that at one time policemen always had to be six foot or more – can anyone verify this?] and would cycle round Brent Knoll three times every day calling at each of the three pubs in turn to see if there were any “important messages” for him. They don’t make them like that anymore! Archie Fay was mine host at the Red Cow for thirty two years, but he died in January 1959. His wife, Winifred Mary Fay, was granted the licence of the Red Cow at Burnham-on-Sea annual Licensing Session the following month, on the 7th of February 1959. She had been born Winifred Foster, into a farm labouring family in Winterborne Zelston, near Blandford in Dorset, in 1891, so was sixty seven years old at that time. Both she and an older sister, Mabel, became domestic servants in Zeals, Wiltshire. Eleven servants were listed in Zeals House, but the only family member listed is Geoffrey Sebag-Montefine, who was 17 years old at the time but still listed as the head of the household. Winifred and Archie were married in Blandford in 1920. A couple of months ago, I mentioned some statistics regarding the number of various types of licensed premises recorded in 1928 in the Rural District Council. When Winifred was granted her licence, other similar statistics were noted, which are an interesting contrast. Whilst the earlier report noted only beerhouses and alehouses, this report has only 15 beerhouses, as opposed to 50 previously. No beerhouses are recorded for 1959, there were 11 before, but the number of licensed premises has risen to 105 as there were 79 fully licensed premises in 1959. Actually, that number, 105, shows a small fall from a year or so earlier, as 4 houses are said to have closed in 1958/9. The number of off-licenses remains remarkably similar, as there were 10 in 1928 and 11 in the year 1958/9. Convictions were not mentioned in the 1959 report. Exactly how long Winifred retained the licence at the Red Cow is not clear. Janet Harris is recorded as saying that, back in the sixties, the proprietor of the Red Cow was the heavily moustached John Ireland, an ex-Royal Air Force serviceman. His predecessor was a landlady who moved to the Fox and Goose. Which suggests that Winifred was that predecessor. Does anyone have any knowledge of this and also of the heavily moustached John Ireland? If so, please do get in touch and I will mention it next month. One of the sources of information I use are local newspapers going back well into the nineteenth century. From these, I checked the latest date that I could find for the property auctions I have mentioned over the last few months, which was the 28th March 1975. That does not prove that they stopped then, but advertising was a major element in making them a successful event. Having said that, one of the best stories I know of those sales goes back to 1933 when Doug Raffells said that his father bought Hillside House in an auction at the Red Cow. Apparently, he got it for a good price because no one else turned up for the auction! Continued on page 20

Brent Knoll House Histories – Continued Which brings us to the latest chapter in the history of this local pub. The present landlord, Mike was asked to open the Village Fête and gave a short synopsis of his life for the Fête Programme. As many of you may not have seen that I will repeat it here, with one or two small additions. Mike was born in 1944 in Queen Camel in Somerset. He attended Ansford Secondary School before becoming an apprentice at Claridges Hotel in London. Janet was born Janet Chapman, a year earlier than Mike, in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, which is where they were married in 1965. They had three Claridges Hotel, London

children, Helen, Andrew and Amy. Together they joined a hotel group known as Hunt Edmond Hotels, where they became joint managers of various hotels in the Cotswolds area. In 1970 they acquired the tenancy of the Knowle Inn in Bawdrip, where they remained for ten years, before coming to the Red Cow in 1980. Mike’s comment was that they have remained, happily, ever since. Perhaps the only downside to their Knowle Inn Bawdrip tenancy was in November 2012 (was it really as long ago as that?) when the rhyne in front of the Red Cow overflowed and they had water in the bar, the restaurant and the kitchen, several inches deep. That was on a Wednesday, but amazingly they were open again for business on the Thursday evening. Wow. John Page

VILLAGE FÊTE - THANK YOU Again the sun shone for the Village Fête and a good time was had by all. Thank you to all those who attended this event and thank you to everyone who helped in the morning getting the Green ready and clearing away at the end of the afternoon. Thank you for all the donations and thank you to those people who bought raffle tickets. The Village Fête Committee are grateful to everyone who supports this event and helps to make it a successful afternoon, with proceeds this year again being shared between the Parish Hall and the Friends of St Michael’s. Chest Tomb to the memory of Edward Symes Parish Surgeon, St Michael’s Church, Brent Knoll Further to my item in the July/August edition of the Brent Knoll News, I have been asked if I would be willing to continue with this Project. Having already worked on it for 12 months, and after much consideration, I have agreed to give it one more try. I informed the Parish Council of my decision at the July meeting. As I have said previously, I have been Informed by Historic that as the Tomb is Grade 2 listed and not Grade 2* then what is necessary for the project to proceed is: 1. Permission from the District Council Conservation Officer and 2. Permission from the Church Authorities by way of a Faculty. I am in contact with the Conservation Officer, who is willing to provide a specification outlining the work that he requires to be carried out. Once I have received this I will put the work out to tender and when a price is known I will check to see if the necessary finance is available. If it is available I will the ask The Friend's of St Michael’s to obtain the necessary permission. As you can, see there is a lot of work involved, which will take time and I can see that it will be 2020 at the earliest before any work will be done. Autumn babies In September, we get our last orphans of the year which will be baby hedgehogs. If the hoglets are very late arriving, the mother will sometimes desert as it is more important for her to survive than to worry about the youngsters finding food. Of course there are the ones where mum has been killed, and they come out during the day looking for food and crying. The Autumn too is time that we worry whether hedgehogs are going to be big enough to survive the Winter by hibernating, so putting food like cat food out for them will help them – don’t forget the cat biscuits for their teeth. Make sure you have those areas of dry leaves and cover in a quiet corner of your garden to give them somewhere to sleep the Winter away. Adults need to be 600gms to hibernate through the Winter but they will have time to get to their weight until the weather changes, which is usually at the start of November. If you have any concerns, do give us a ring and we are happy to give advice. On 15th September, we are holding a family day at Secret World from 12 noon to 8pm. It’s going to be an It’s a Knock Out with teams of 5 competing in some crazy games! It’s £20 per person as a team and you need to register on [email protected] and find out about the rules. No need to have a team, just come and enjoy the fun. There will be a bar, music, children’s activities and stalls. Entrance £5 for adults and children £2 October 5th is our annual Auction and Ball with this year’s theme being ‘Out of Africa’. Three course meal, music, silent and main auction plus casino. Tickets £45 and tables of ten get 2 bottles of free wine! It’s being held at the Webbington Hotel and there may be a coach if people would like transport. Lastly, although it’s a long way away, on November 23rd, Lloyd and Rose Buck will be giving an evening in aid of Secret World at the McMillan Theatre in . Starlings, Barn owl and a raven will be flying over the audience. Find out about their work in films and programmes. Tickets are already selling. It will be a night not to be missed for all ages. More Rambles from the Rambler Here we are in September, when according to the song “the leaves of brown come tumbling down”, that’s if the winds we’ve been having have not blown all the green ones off. September is when we should be foraging in nature’s larder: there are countless nuts, berries, plums, apples, pears and fungi to be stored. Personally I would steer clear of the fungi as I would not know one mushroom from a magical one. The Summer has provided a marvellous show of butterflies, they seem to have been everywhere. The swallows have produced a second brood and would have flown by the time you read this and then I can power wash the garage and return my car to its home. On a walk recently, I came across a large and deep excavation, I wondered what could have been responsible for such a hole. Then I noticed bees flying into the hole and disappearing under a stone slab. I think a badger could have been the culprit on a mission to extract honey but was halted by the huge stone. The B’s deserve an A for choosing such a site. Have you seen the pretty flower displays outside properties in the village, I especially liked Chris Fears “Asters on Castors”, I know there were no asters but it’s the only flower I could think of that rhymes with castors. September and it's going back to school time, which reminds me of a story I heard about a young man who was going up to the Secondary school. On his return home at the end of his first day, he was quizzed by his father as to how it went. The lad was eager to relate his experience, which was totally positive; he told his father that as well as lessons there were extra clubs one could join. His father listened and said that if he joined a club he would give his full backing to the lad. The following week the lad came home and told his father he had joined the drama group and that he had been given the part of a married man in the latest production. His father told him not to worry but to keep his head down and to work hard at becoming a respected member of the group and that he might then earn a speaking part in the next production. It’s only a joke ladies. The Rambler

Welcome back to Sudokus after the Summer break. I thank Klaus Brenner for providing the Easy Sudoku in the shape of a star, which I think most people will be able to solve using basic techniques. The 17 clue Sudoku is a bit more difficult but still not much so! Let’s see if we can have a record number of solutions sent in this month. Several people solve them each month, but don’t send them in. Please make this an exception! Congratulation to Jenny Butters who solved the Sandwich Sudoku that I sent to regular punters. Just 10 persons sent answers in last month. Comments were “Thanks David -enjoyed these” – “Thanks for those David.”– “Good fun, thank you”. Solutions came from, Klaus Brenner, Pauline Chadwick, Christine Hall, Mac Hares, Liz Ibrahim, Chris Marsh, Frankie and Geoff New, John Spiers and Ted Toon. Dear Friends, Many of you will have visited churches, perhaps while on holiday, and frustratingly found them to be locked. This is a sad reflection on both sides of our society. Some people may in the past have abused the church and either stolen things or done expensive damage. However, locked doors have also sometimes resulted from a mistaken view that the building is somehow the preserve of the members of the congregation to be protected at all costs from the world outside and only used on Sundays – how wrong! It is my delight that all three of the church buildings in this parish are open every day to all- comers. Many people, literally from all over the world, have shown interest in the unique history of each place or been trying to trace relatives, others have popped in to find a peaceful place to sit awhile and maybe to pray. There are often messages in the visitors’ books and prayer requests left in the prayer areas. While God does not live in a building (He’s not that restricted), churches are indeed special places, often built on particular sites where people have historically felt very close to God. There are those who refer to these places as numinous or “thin places”. The still, cool, atmosphere, surrounded by ancient stones with the stories they could tell, is conducive to meditation and a deepening awareness of the faith that has driven people to maintain the fabric for so long to bear witness to God’s presence in these communities. The flags on which they walked and the font in which thousands have been baptised are a direct link with those godly people. And through the regular, week-by-week worshipping congregation this faith is kept alive today. The church doors are open as an invitation; just as Jesus’ arms are open, to welcome us all. If you have not recently dropped in to one of the village churches, please do so. Sit quietly. Perhaps pick up a hymn book, look at the Bibles that are around, read a leaflet or magazine; open your eyes and study a stained-glass window or, best of all, close your eyes, simply “be” in God’s presence and listen. In the stillness, God may speak to you: out of the sheer and slender silence (see the story about Elijah in 1 Kings 19:11-13); may He draw you to Himself and touch you with His love. Blessing,

The Revd. Kevin Wright, Priest-in-Charge, The Parish of Three Saints

Brent Knoll Weather Report – June/July 2019 June got off to a promising start with high pressure to the south of the UK, and enough sunshine to take the thermometer to 24.9°C at lunchtime on the 1st. Unfortunately, the promise was not fulfilled until about three weeks later - from the 2nd onwards things went downhill, and it wasn’t until the end of the month that Summer arrived. The problem was that the high pressure moved off east and settled over central Europe, where it blocked the progress of Atlantic lows which queued up over the UK. The result was persistent cloud and rain, below-normal temperatures and high humidity. Now we know what the middle of the Atlantic feels like when a blocking high sits over the UK bringing us sunshine. The 7th is worth a special mention, when a lively low moved from the Bay of Biscay into the English Channel. Since the low was to our south, it created an easterly breeze, and late in the afternoon, this breeze met a north-westerly airflow, creating a convergence line roughly along the course of the M5 from Devon to Bristol. There was nowhere for the air to go but up, and as it cooled it generated torrential rain - about 20mm fell in one hour over Brent Knoll. There was thunder and lightning, and a funnel cloud (a mini-tornado) was photographed over the Knoll - one of several seen in the south-west that afternoon. This was the wettest day we have recorded since the station was set up, with a total of 44.8mm. Fortunately things were calmer and drier for the Fête the next day, but there was hail and thunder on the 9th and it wasn’t until the 21st that the weather began to improve. The Summer Solstice finally saw high pressure over the UK, with sunshine and respectable June temperatures at last. Perhaps a little too respectable by the end of the month, when the high moved east a little and combined with lows to the west to draw hot air up from the south - we recorded 30.9°C here on the 29th, but Europe reached 45°C. Overall this was our second-wettest June, with a total of 123.4mm, and the average temperature was about a degree below normal at 14.6°C. The first half of July saw pleasant Summer weather with high pressure never far away – there was plenty of sunshine, almost no rain and a light westerly breeze. The sky was clear for the lunar eclipse on the 17th, but on the 19th low pressure to the west of Ireland produced 18mm of rain – two-thirds of July’s total. Fortunately it was dry for Music on the Green the following day (another near-miss), but there was a brisk breeze during the evening to keep the dancers on their toes. The next week or so saw the warmest weather of the month, but not the sunniest. Once again high pressure to the east of the UK combined with lows to our west to draw warm and humid air up from the south, producing a maximum of 31.9°C on the 23rd, and overnight thunderstorms. Things freshened up when the Scandinavian high moved away on the 26th, and the month finished with bright and breezy weather and Summer showers. July was on the warm side with an average of 18.2°C, and dry with 26.4mm of rain so plenty of time for haymaking – a good Summer month. BRENT KNOLL VILLAGE SCARECROW WEEKEND

21st & 22nd September 10am-4pm

WELL, WELL, WELL, HAVE WE GOT A TREAT IN STORE FOR YOU ALL!! Thanks to 50 (yes 50!) wonderful families and groups in Brent Knoll we are going to have 50 extra bodies in BK on 21st and 22nd September. A massive thank you to these families and groups who are willing to give of their time and skills to put on this fantastic show in our village for us all to enjoy. Some of these local families support us every year, some have a ‘gap’ year and then come back and again this year we have several new scarecrow makers - we are so grateful to them all. We also gain many visitors to the village over the weekend and the whole village is alive with activity; families on bikes, people walking around and chatting to each other and people in cars not wanting to miss the ones on the outskirts of the village. Some people have told us that they visited the area for the scarecrow weekend and later bought a house in the village – Some visitors come along every year with their children or grandchildren to enjoy a family day out in the fresh air to enjoy the scarecrows and our lovely village. Some people use scarecrows to identify where a particular place is – they say where the ...... scarecrow was! Please start at the Parish Hall where you can buy your trail sheet and map. Start/finish/ or have a midway stop at the Parish Hall and enjoy reasonably priced food and drinks. We will also be selling souvenir badges, pens and mugs this year. Please share this event with all your friends and families and support your local Girlguiding groups; Brent Knoll Guides, Brownies and Rainbows. Don’t forget to follow Sally Scarecrow on Facebook and our Instagram brent_knoll_scarecrow_festival – where we will be sharing scarecrows from the past to ‘whet your appetite’ and remind you what’s in store in the lead up to the weekend! Thank you to Caroline at the Village Shop who will be selling Trail Sheets and maps in September, also members of Girlguiding Brent Knoll and Brent Knoll School will have Trail Sheets for sale. September Nature diary The Guardian Nature Diarists often take time off from their “local patch” and report on nature in other parts of country, and occasionally in foreign parts. I have previously reported from Botswana, and this month I shall journey to the south coast of England and write about the Jurassic Coast. This refers to the coastline between Exmouth in the west (Triassic era 250 million years ago) and Studland near Swanage in the east (Cretaceous era 100 million years ago). The reason it is called the Jurassic Coast is that most of the coastline in between is composed of limestone and shale from the Jurassic period (225 million years ago). The stretch of coastline that extends from Lyme Regis to Swanage contains some of the most fossil rich rocks in the country. The rocks also contain deposits of oil shale and at certain points can actually be set alight! Near Swanage there is enough oil to for it to be worth drilling commercially, and there is a successful onshore oil field at Wytch Farm. The Jurassic Coast is important for nature conservation for three reasons. First, the fact that most of the coast is either limestone or chalk means that its flora is rich and diverse. Alkaline soils are botanically much richer than acid soils, and this botanical diversity provides suitable habitat for a wide range of butterflies. Second, the wetlands associated with estuaries and inlets around the south coast are important wintering grounds for birds. Third, one of the most important points for bird migration, Portland Bill, is on the Jurassic Coast. It juts out into the English Channel and provides the first arrival point for Spring migrant birds. There are two locations that we visit in Dorset that regularly yield good wildlife sightings. The first is the Isle of Portland. This is basically an enormous mound of limestone that is approached from Weymouth by a causeway running beneath the end of Chesil Beach. This is an amazing pebble ridge that forms the coastline from Portland in the east to Abbotsbury in the west, a stretch of 18 miles. Near Portland rare little terns nest each Summer. Portland itself is studded with quarries, which were set up in the 17th and 18th centuries. The stone was off loaded on the coast directly into ships that then sailed up to London. Many of our famous London landmarks e.g. St Pauls Cathedral, the Bank of England and the National Gallery are built of Portland stone. The worked out quarries contain a rich flora, and on our visit this July we saw significant numbers of chalkhill blue butterflies. At Portland Bill the wind can be fierce but this produces magnificent plumes of sea spray as the waves pound against the rocks. Watching gannets wheeling in the sunlight against stormy grey clouds on a Winter’s day is a wonderful experience. Durlston Country Park is situated on the coast above Swanage. The centrepiece of the Park is a Victorian “castle” built by the Mowlem construction firm as a gift to local people. It was financed out of the profits from local quarrying. South of the castle is the Great Globe, a map of the world carved in limestone 10 feet in diameter. Footpaths run along the coast from the castle and these are lined with stone plaques, carved with quotations from Shakespeare and the Bible. This eccentric setting has superb views across the English Channel and the cliffs provide nesting sites for guillemots, razorbills and the occasional puffin. On our recent visit we saw, and filmed, a peregrine falcon consuming a pigeon that it had just killed. The grassland on the cliff tops and inland is famous for its limestone flora. The rare early spider orchid flowers there in significant numbers in late April, and throughout the Summer the turf is studded with a wide variety of wild flowers. Ged Macmillan Coffee Morning Friday 27th September, 10.30-12.30 at Knoll Cottage (next to the village shop) As most of you know, I have recently experienced Macmillan first hand and they are amazing, so, when my lovely neighbour Alison mentioned that she was thinking about hosting a Macmillan coffee morning, I jumped at the chance to help and get involved. So please take this opportunity to join us for coffee and cake on Friday 27th September. If you cannot make that day, please feel free to make a donation to Macmillan in the shop – I am sure that anyone who has been through the process will agree that the Macmillan nurses are wonderful and the service they provide is invaluable.
