J.A. Wiid. Prof. dr. J.A. J.F. Engelbrecht, B.A. Mnr. W. Tyrrell-Glynn, adjunk-direkteur van die S.A. Openbare Biblioteek, Kaapstad, wat op my versoek my Engelse weergawe van die inleiding en die samevattende vertaling gelees het. Die ere-sekretaresse van die Van Riebeeck-Vereniging, mev. M.G. W.J.

THE chapters in this volume upon the Cape Colony before 1848, Natal before 1845, and the Orange Free State, South African Republic, Zulu land, and Basutoland before 1872, contain an outline of my History of South Africa, which has been published in -England in five octavo volumes. In that work my authorities are given, so they need not be repeated here. The remaining c~apters have been written merely from general acquaintance with South African affairs acquired during many years' residence -in the country, and have not the same claim to be regarded as absolutely correct, though I have endeavoured to make them reliable. In prep,!ring the book I was guided by the principle that truth should tie told, regardless of nationalities or parties, and I strove to the utmost. to avoid anything like favour or prejudice. The above was the preface to the first edition of this book, which was __ puJ:>lished in September, 1893. As successive edition!;" aRB"ared the volume was enlarged, and nov: it has been my task to add the saddest chapter of the whole, the one in which is recorded the bc~inning.

Cape burgerschap and faction disputes in Cape Town in the 1770s. Teunis Baartman October 2011 The Cape of Good Hope was rocked by a period of political turmoil at the end of the 1770s and beginning of 1780s. Coenraad Beyers published an extensive study about this period and labelled the protesters: Cape Patriots (‘Die Kaapse Patriotte’). In his view they were pre-Afrikaner burghers who, driven by ideological arguments, opposed a colonial VOC tyranny. This thesis aims to revise this analysis, while seeking to demonstrate that late eighteenth century Cape society was marked by a complex and intertwined network of status groups. Town The burgher protests are used as a case study to illustrate that the Cape settlement was part and parcel of the Dutch empire. The protesters emphasised that their burgerschap was on par with that in cities in theCape Dutch Republic.

1 PALAEONTOLOGICAL HERITAGE: COMBINED DESKTOP & FIELD-BASED BASIC ASSESSMENT Grid connection for the proposed Impofu North, Impofu West & Impofu East Wind Farms near Humansdorp, Eastern Cape John E. Almond PhD (Cantab.) Natura Viva cc, PO Box 12410 Mill Street, Cape Town 8010, RSA [email protected] August 2019 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The present report provides a palaeontological heritage Basic Assessment of the proposed Impofu grid connection. This includes (a) the approximately 120 km-long, 2 km-wide 132 kV grid connection corridor between the proposed Impofu North, Impofu West and Impofu East Wind Farms and the national grid in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) near Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. Potential impacts of the proposed new Impofu collector switching station, wind farm switching stations and short 132 kV transmission lines linking them to the collector switching station as well as of substation extension areas are also considered. The report is based on a combined desktop and field-based study of the preferred grid connection corridor, incorporating a 2 km wide zone, with a special focus on areas underlain by potentially fossiliferous bedrocks. The grid connection study area is underlain by several formations of potentially fossiliferous sediments of the Gamtoos Group, Cape Supergroup, Uitenhage Group and Algoa Group (Sections 6 & 7, Table 1). However, on the southern coastal platform most of the fossils originally preserved in these bedrocks appear to have been destroyed by tectonic deformation and deep chemical weathering. The overlying Late Caenozoic superficial sediments such as alluvium, soils and ferricretes, are likewise of low palaeontological sensitivity. Relict patches of Plio-Pleistocene aeolianites (wind-blown sands) of the Nanaga Formation (Algoa Group) present in the subsurface on the interior coastal platform contain Early Stone Age artefacts but any associated fossils such as mammalian remains, or terrestrial gastropods have probably been destroyed by weathering here.

IDENTIFICATION AND MAPPING OF ENVIRONMENTALLY SIGNIFICANT AREAS IN THE CAPE METROPOLITAN AREA (CMA) HERITAGE COMPONENT Prepared for Cape Metropolitan Council Project No: J90136a June 1999 Prepared by Tim Hart & Belinda Mutti Archaeology Contracts Office Department of Archaeology University of Cape Town Private Bag Rondebosch 7701 Phone (021) 650 2357 Fax (021) 650 2352 Email [email protected] CMC HERITAGE RESOURCES SENSITIVITY STUDY ACCOMPANYING STATEMENT This statement accompanies the set of maps and spreadsheets produced by the Archaeology Contracts Office for Gibb Africa and The Cape Metropolitan Council. It is designed to place the work in context so users of the final product will understand how the information was collected and the implications thereof. 1. Team members We are a team of professional archaeologists who have extensive local knowledge of heritage issues and sites. We have collected the information contained in the spreadsheets and maps. Thus the areas, sites and priorities that have been identified in the study reflect our background and values. Perceptions of what is an important heritage object or site range from places valued by members of a small community, to broadly recognised places of historical or community distinction. This study cannot cover the entire range of possibilities, however we have attempted to identify areas that are known and significant to a range of people who work regularly in the heritage field. This includes historic landscapes, buildings, graveyards (disused), shipwrecks, colonial and pre-colonial archaeological sites. 2. Parameters The new heritage legislation (the South African Heritage Resources Act of 1999) has been the guidline to which we have referred with respect to identification of areas and definition of sensitivity.
