The Hastings College Alma Mater

- A. Loran Olsen, Composer (1962)

Dear Friends, again we sing

In voices loud and strong

To Hastings College echoing

Once more our glorious song.

To her white and crimson banner,

To her spirit proud and free

To Alma Mater now we sing

In loving loyalty. (Hastings to thee)

Hastings College Football 2019 Position Breakdown with quotes from Head Coach Tony Harper

The 2019 Hastings College football campaign was certainly filled with its ups and downs finishing the year 5-6 (3-6). During the year, the Broncos started three different quarterbacks, which provided some inconsistent play from that position. Hastings will have to look for a front-runner at that position while trying to replace the second all-time leading rusher in school history. The Broncos will also have to see who will try to fill the shoes of its first All-American defensive player in 24 years. There will also be a new face at key positions on special teams, as Hastings will look to find a new kicker and

along with all new faces at and kick return. There are many questions coming into fall camp but there is still experience coming back as well.

Offense Replacing Tahj Willingham is no small feat as he rushed for 1,256 yards last season while scoring eight touchdowns. He amassed 3,675 yards and 40 touchdowns in his career placing him at No. 2 in school history in career rushing yards and at No. 4 in career rushing touchdowns. The front-runner for being the No. 1 is really wide open. Fall camp will be critical to see if he will face any competition for the starting roll. Head Coach Tony Harper discusses what he has seen at leading into fall camp, “We had some injuries early in the spring before spring ball even started so we had a running back by committee, we had multiple guys back there from Malik Thorpe to Brenton Bell to a couple other young guys,” Harper continued. “So there was a lot of reps chewed up by new guys and I think that was one of the reasons coach Head went really slow deliberately on installing the run game. That’s a position you know we do have guys coming back in a Tyree Nesmith who is the only one that has game experience but we think Bell is going to have an opportunity and you’re going to see some freshman playing in that position and competing for that role. They are going to get every opportunity throughout camp and fortunately we come to camp on August 4 and we don’t play the first game until August 31 so we have time where we don’t have to rush it and push the panic button. We can take time and get a lot of different reps, we’re splitting practices up so these running backs are going to get lots of carries throughout camp.” The two favorites to be the top guy at are Isaiah Jackson (SR/Compton, CA) and Griffin Roberts (JR/Fort Collins, CO). Each quarterback picked up starts last year but Jackson looks to have the edge heading into camp. His best game came against Top 10 powerhouse Northwestern where he went 16-for-36 for 224 yards and three touchdowns as the Broncos gave the Red Raiders a run for its money before falling 39- 29. Harper touched on the quarterback situation, “Griffin Roberts was limited in the spring as he was able to throw the ball and a few things in Skel,” Harper said. “Isaiah Jackson really did a great job of embracing what coach was trying to get done over there. I think he has a pretty good grasp of the but the thing that Jackson has is his leadership, guys are rallying around him. I mean he is our No. 1 guy going into fall camp and we expect him to be the guy coming out of camp. Now we know things can change as we have a lot of young pups coming in, you still have Griff coming off the injury but Jackson has assumed command of the offense and he will be our starter.” At wide out, Hastings will miss one of the more consistent receivers in recent history in Jordan Johnson. Last year Johnson led the team with 47 catches for 737 yards and four touchdowns. He finished his career with 2,063 yards and 15 touchdowns. He currently is second in school history in receiving yards in a season when he amassed 931 in

2016. He sits third in school history in career receiving yards with 2,063. Hastings will look to Anthony Martinez (SR/Oceanside, CA), Tyler Miller (SO/Baytown, TX) and Terrance McIntyre (SO/San Diego, CA) to pick up the reins. “Riley Ostendorf had a really good spring you know, he is a bigger target,” Harper said. “You have a couple other guys that are coming back in Terrance McIntyre, Anthony Martinez and Tyler Miller. Anthony Martinez has to be the leader not just on the field but in the class room as well in regards to what we are trying to get accomplished. He has to step up and hold everybody accountable because coach Head’s only around those guys 20 hours a week so there is a lot of extra hours that those guys are off so we are going to put a lot of pressure on him. We finally get Keioty Stenhouse on the field in the crimson on a Saturday so we are excited to see what he brings. What we’re missing right now at that position is the big, physical go up and get the ball like the Noah Housh’s, like Travis Brown, Micheal Novicki, and Jordan Johnson. So you are probably going to see a couple young guys competing at that position.” Maybe the most important piece of that Bronco offense will be the offensive line where Hastings will have to replace four starters from a year ago. With Ula Tausaga, Frank Vierra, Sam Young and Blaine Morrow gone due to graduation, fall camp will be hugely important in assessing the depth chart. Look for Stefphon Sherman, Jon Satterly, Justin Heine (JR/Waco, NE), Pat Hudson (JR/Gothenburg, NE) and Rico Santana (SR/Tomball, TX) to bolster the offensive line in 2019. Harper knows that with any offense to click, the offensive line is the key, “To be honest with you, that’s what sets the tone for everything,” Harper continued. “That is probably the biggest question mark, maybe concern going into this season because we lost so much experience. I don’t care who you are, you cannot replace a 22, 23, 24-year-old young man with an 18 and 19 year old kid right out of the gate. There is going to be some bumps and bruises and I think that’s why I get so fired up having coach Head here because he is the o-line coach. He has a ton of experience, he played that position at the highest level, he will get those guys set and ready. The thing is there will be a lot of question marks, you know we bring back Hud (Patrick Hudson), Jon Satterly as your book tackles so you’re kind of feeling pretty good right there. We have a couple young guys that we redshirted last year that haven’t played on a Saturday but they’ve been with coach Head now for a full year. We have some good ones coming in and I don’t think we will be quite set in the first couple of weeks. I think it’s going to take some time for coach Head to find what he feels comfortable with.”

Harper also talked about the new schedule and how it will affect fall camp and getting the schemes implemented, “It’s a negative and a positive,” Harper said. “The negative is that in the past, we had two weeks and bam, we’re playing football. So we really had to get a lot of stuff in early and people will say well you had two-a-days every single day to get ready. Well we really didn’t because of the new rules with the one one, the acclimation so if you look at this year compared to the last two years, in reality we have just as many if not four more practices to get installed what we need to get installed.

The biggest challenge for us now is with school starting so much earlier, they guys’ brains will be all over the place so we need to get on a schedule, stick to the schedule. We need to make this schedule as simple and as black and white for those guys so they can feel comfortable. We are going to have a lot of prep time, more meeting time and sometimes the meeting times with the young kids is just as important if not more important then actually being on the field. Now we have the time to install stuff and hopefully they can regurgitate it back out there on the field. We as coaches have to do a very good job of taking it slow, let’s not rush anything and let’s make sure we master one thing before we move onto the next.”

Defense Replacing a guy like Anthony Murray is really not an easy thing to do being the teams first defensive All-American since 1995 when Shawn Bennett did it as a defensive lineman. Murray led the team with three interceptions but two of those he returned for a touchdown. His first one sparked a comeback win against Concordia as his pick six tied the game 13-13 late in the third. In his final game as a Bronco, he sparked the Broncos with a 65-yard pick six to give Hastings a 7-6 lead heading into halftime against Dakota Wesleyan as Hastings went on to win 21-13. But that is just one of four players Hastings will have to replace in the defensive backfield as Murray, Wesley Jardim, Ross Ostendorf and Cornelius Barber III are all gone. This group consisted of the top two tacklers on the team, the fourth top tackler on the team and the seventh best tackler on the team. A bright spot will be the return of Josh Stansell (JR/Baton Rouge, LA) as he has plenty of starting experience from two years ago and some from this past year. The Broncos will have to look to players like vet Nathan Holdridge (SR/Castle Rock, CO), Chris Rodriguez, DaeRon Jones, Mikel Drehle and then hope some of the new faces along with some second year guys stepping up to fill some big shoes. Coach Harper knows fall camp will be critical since there will be so many new faces especially in the secondary, “We lost our entire secondary at corner, free safety and corner. We lost an outside safety in Ross Ostendorf,” Harper continued. “We lost three starting however we bring back three starting linebackers because we played so many guys at that position. In the secondary we bring back two guys that played safety, we bring back two guys that played corner so in the grand scheme of things we have at least some game-like experience. Now they weren’t technically called a starter or No. 1 on the depth chart but at least we have guys that have had the ball fly by their ears every so often. For us in the spring, it was kind of like the offense, we wanted to limit it and we wanted to get close to mastering the coverages that we were putting in. We limited our pressures, we limited our fronts, we limited our coverages to allow the guys to play faster. I think they picked it up pretty well once that first week was over. I think we were flying around pretty well because they know what the expectations are.” The strength of the Bronco will certainly be on the defensive line where Keyuntea Kinney (JR/Marietta, TX) Kendall Oberheide, and Abdul Marei (SR/Houston, TX) had solid seasons a year ago. Hastings will have to replace two

All-Conference performers in Austin Bretting and Tyler Parthemer but there is plenty of depth there. At , guys like Tydus Clay (SO/Conroe, TX) and Tyler Kennedy will have great opportunities to show what they are made of if the Bronco defense is going to have a successful 2019 campaign. “We’re looking at being on the same page and flying to the football,” Harper said. “I know that’s simple and I know that’s coach speak but at the end of the day on defense let’s be honest, if you overwhelm guys there is going to be breakdowns. We have got to see our guys communicate, we have to see them playing with a reckless abandoning like we did a few years back. I thought the defense played better as the year went on last year. That’s what we have to get, we have to make sure everybody knows exactly what they are to do and how it fits off the guy in front of them, beside them and behind them. I think that they have taken some good steps in that direction as I have seen guys in the spring open their mouth and say good things in regards to coaching their teammates up. We have Alex Allen who is done playing but he is going to help us coach this year. He knows this defense as well as anybody out here because he’s been in it for four years. It’s all going to be setup up front, losing Austin Bretting, Tyler Parthemer, those guys are very good football players but we do have Kendall Oberheide, Keyuntea Kinney, Abdul Marei, Robert Hernandez, Chance Bollen coming back. We have some guys up there with experience but now we just have to make sure we are on the same page and knowing this thing from front to back.”

Special Teams This is probably where the most question marks are for this team as there is no returning starter at any position. Willingham and Murray are gone so Hastings has experimented with some new faces in the spring and we will see who will emerge during fall camp. With really no options returning in the kicking game, look for newcomer Jason Bachle of Grand Island and Ryan Hunter of Aurora to compete for the starting position of kicker and punter. Hastings will also have to replace its long snapper as Cole Fisher has also graduated. What we are going to do when we report on August 4, special teams will be included in every single practice. In the past we waited a week because we had Alex Stogdill, we had Cole Fisher at long snapper, we had return men coming back but this year on the first day of practice we are having special teams’ practices. We are doing drills to hopefully identify different guys from the long snapping, return, cover standpoints. We have three true freshmen kickers coming in, one from Colorado, one from Grand Island and one from Aurora. Those three guys are going to be battling to be our starting kicker and punter. We split our practices for the first week with the first-year players will go in the morning, the vets will come in the afternoon so what we will do is split those special teams kickers into different sessions. We just want to kind of give them a different look and feel to put them under pressure from day one.
