BLASIOLE & MOELLER EARN G-MAC WEEKLY AWARDS Junior running back Matt Blasiole was named the G-MAC Offensive player of the Week while sophomore kicker Marcus Moeller was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week following outstanding individual performances in 2016 SCHEDULE / RESULTS last week’s loss to Walsh. Blasiole finished with 235 yards of offense (170 rushing, 65 receiving) and two touchdowns. He has 894 yards of total offense Date Opponent Time/Results and seven touchdowns on the season. Moeller went 3-for-3 on field goals including a career-long 47-yard make in the fourth quarter. He is 10-of-12 on 9/3 Taylor (IN) W 39-33 the season and ranks 9th in NCAA DII with a 83.3% field goal success rate 9/10 at Truman State (MO) L 3 -35 9/17 Notre Dame (OH) L 21-49 9/24 at Robert Morris (PA) L 19-21 THE DROUGHT CONTINUES 10/1 at Saint Francis (PA) L 10-52 Malone’s loss to Walsh last Saturday marked the eighth straight defeat in the rivalry. The Pioneers led 18-17 after Blasiole’s touchdown in the third quarter 10/8 Alderson Broaddus (WV) L 16-35 but Walsh regained the lead on its next possession. Malone put together a 12- 10/15 Haywood (TN) W 50-0 play drive before Moeller’s field goal made it 24-21. The Pioneers, however, 10/22 at Walsh L 21-24 managed just 10 yards and failed to generate a first down in their final four 10/29 God’s Chosen 2:00 PM possessions. If it’s any consolation, the three points were the closest Malone 11/5 at Kentucky Wesleyan 2:00 PM has come to beating Walsh since a three-point loss in 2010. Since then, Malone 11/12 at West Alabama 3:00 PM had loss the previous five rivalry meetings by an average of 20 points. Malonepioneers.com MALONE FOOTBALL 2016 GAME NOTES COACH’S CORNER RED ZONE STRUGGLES The Pioneers’ ineffectiveness in the red zone most certainly affected the outcome of last Saturday’s contest. Malone made it inside the Walsh 5-yard line Fred on two separate occasions in the first half but was twice forced to settle for short Thomas field goals. The inability to score red zone touchdowns has been a trend all season as the Pioneers have reached the endzone on just 30% of their 20 red Malone University zone possessions and have settled for nine red-zone field goals. Of the six red Head Coach zone touchdowns, the Pioneers’ only passing touchdown came on 4th-and-goal First Season (2-6) from the two in the waning seconds of the Robert Morris game. Quarterback John Iacucci, who completes a respectable 55.7% of his passes outside of the 20 INDIVIDUAL LEADERS yard line, is just for 4-of-19 (21.1%) when the field shrinks. Malone Season Records EXPLOSIVE PLAYS Passing Passing In stark contrast to the red zone deficiencies, the Pioneers have had no John Iacucci Billy Bob Orsagh shortage of big plays. Matt Blasiole’s 53-yard touchdown run in the second 97-186, 1315 yds, 5 TD (2007) 3293 yds, 24 TD quarter against Walsh was the Pioneers’ eighth touchdown of 25 yards or longer this season. Earlier in the game, Blasiole caught a career-long 62-yard Rushing Rushing pass to set up a first quarter field goal. In a second quarter-drive, John Iacucci Matt Blasiole Bernard Payton ‘07 hit Ashton Dulin for a 35-yard strike. On the season, Malone has had 29 plays of 128 att, 679 yds, 5 TD 327 att, 1637 yds,19 TD 20 yards or longer John Iacucci Joel Peterson ‘01 68 att, 113 yds, 2 TD 217 att, 1165 yds PIONEERS TO WATCH ON SATURDAY Offense: In what expects to be another chance for the Pioneers to rest their Receiving Receiving starters and get some reps fot the reserves, look for freshmen running backs Ashton Dulin Derek Deardorff ‘08 37 rec, 649 yds, 3 TD 69 rec, 1155 yds, 14 TD Damon Williams and Calerb D’Haiti to get a heavy dose of carries. The duo Matt Blasiole Derek Deardorff ‘07 combined for 140 yards and three touchdowns two weeks ago against 17 rec, 215 yds, 2 TD 60 rec, 1118 yds,13 TD Haywood. Football 101 SCYF: Football is a full contact sport. We will help teach your child how to play the game of football. Football is a team sport. It takes 11 teammates working together to be successful. One mistake can ruin a perfect play. Because of this, we and every other football team practices fundamentals (how to do it) and running plays (what to do). A mistake learned from, is just another lesson in winning. The field • The playing field is 100 yards long. • It has stripes running across the field at five-yard intervals. • There are shorter lines, called hash marks, marking each one-yard interval. (not shown) • On each end of the playing field is an end zone (red section with diagonal lines) which extends ten yards. • The total field is 120 yards long and 160 feet wide. • Located on the very back line of each end zone is a goal post. • The spot where the end zone meets the playing field is called the goal line. • The spot where the end zone meets the out of bounds area is the end line. • The yardage from the goal line is marked at ten-yard intervals, up to the 50-yard line, which is in the center of the field. The Objective of the Game The object of the game is to outscore your opponent by advancing the football into their end zone for as many touchdowns as possible while holding them to as few as possible. There are other ways of scoring, but a touchdown is usually the prime objective.

  • Coaching Special Teams 126 Coaching Youth Football Coaching Special Teams 127
8 Coaching Special Teams 126 Coaching Youth Football Coaching Special Teams 127 ll phases of the kicking segments of a football game are referred to as “special teams.” Just as you teach the offensive and defensive segments to Ayour team, you also will coach all phases of the kicking game. At times, players focus more on their duties on offense and defense and downplay their roles as special teams players. However, special teams are an integral part of a successful football team, and you, as the coach, must remind all players that their contribution on special teams is just as important as their contribution on offense and defense. Kicking-Game Rules The following are special rules that apply only to special teams and should be taught to players as you coach the different phases of the kick- ing game: • A player signals a fair catch by extending an arm above the head and waving it from side to side. The receiving player cannot hit or be hit after a fair catch, and the ball cannot be advanced after the catch. • The kicking team may down the football after the ball has hit the ground. • No one on either team may block below the waist. • No player on the receiving team may touch the punter or kicker unless the receiving team has blocked the kick or the kicker runs with the ball. • A field goal is a scrimmage kick and uses the same rules as the punt. • On a kickoff, after the ball has traveled 10 yards, it is a free ball and either team can gain possession of it.

  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Patrick Mannelly Long Snapper Award
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Patrick Mannelly Long Snapper Award Announced Three of the leading experts in football long snapping have joined forces to create the Patrick Mannelly Long Snapper Award that will be presented annually to the best senior college long snapper. Chris Rubio of Rubio Long Snapping, Kevin Gold of Longsnap.com and the former NFL long snapper the award was named for, Patrick Mannelly, created the Award that will be presented for the first time on December 14, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois. Long snappers are the ultimate anonymous and unsung heroes of football. No successful field goal, extra point or punt can happen without a successful snap to get it started. The Patrick Mannelly Long Snapper Award will shine a bright light on these unnoticed but essential components of football and provide rare recognition for the impactful role they play in today’s game. This will be the one award and night that a long snapper will actually want the attention. The Patrick Mannelly Long Snapper Award is determined by a committee that will include former NFL long snappers, punters and kickers, special team coaches, sportswriters and other experts. The Award will be presented to the overall best long snapper at the Division I FBS level. The winner must be of senior standing, have started 75% of games in his senior year, snap on punts and placements, and demonstrate strong mentality, notable athleticism, as well as speed, accuracy and consistency in their snaps. Additional information about the Award can be found at https://patrickmannellyaward.com, on Twitter @MannellyAward or Instagram @MannellyAward.

  • The “Loco Punt Formation” Article By: Jared Van Acker, Head Football Coach, Galax, Va
THE “LOCO PUNT FORMATION” ARTICLE BY: JARED VAN ACKER, HEAD FOOTBALL COACH, GALAX, VA I want to first off give thanks to American Football Monthly and the extensive knowledge on the game of football that is published within its pages every month. I look forward to the day when the new issue reaches my doorsteps to see the new and innovative minds/trends in the greatest game in the world. I have been the Head Football coach at Galax High School for the last two years and like all coaches I stress the importance of all three phases of the game of football: offense, defense, and special teams. I believe that one of the most important phases is special teams and unfortunately many coaches don’t emphasize its importance until it bites them in the backside. A couple of years ago while I was a young assistant coach, I put some of my own thoughts into a punt scheme that I used while I played at Quincy University, now an NAIA school in Quincy, IL. Like all coaches across America we are “thieves” when it comes to our ideas and schemes and I devised a fun and effective punt formation that I call the “Loco Punt”. This punt formation has been a very effective tool in the punt game for our football team and blends a solid spread punt scheme with an arsenal of fakes to keep the pressure off the punter and to allow for a successful punt and coverage. With this scheme we have been able to change the landscape of many football games! In the two years that we have used the “Loco Punt” we have had only one punt blocked and numerous first-down conversions from the array of fakes that we use.

  • Long Snapping Techniques
Long Snapping Techniques Snapper must practice 15 to 30 minutes a day to master the fundamentals and skills of being a snapper. The snapping workout should be divided into two phases. 1) Individual drills with a partner- this should be a daily routine prior to actual snapping practice. 2) Snapping drills- repetitive snapping to a holder, punter or stationary target. Stretch Routine It’s important to be thoroughly loose before snapping. Key muscle areas are the groin, hamstrings, arms, lower back, shoulders and wrists. Finish stretching with the clock stretch. Clock Stretch: This stretch starts with the snapper spreading his feet as wide as possible and with his back flat, knees slightly bent, arms extended out in front of the body and the hands together. Start at twelve o’clock and go clockwise, then repeat counter clockwise. Touch both and hands at each number of the clock during the rotation. Snapping Progression Step 1: Stance- The most important aspect of long snapping is a comfortable stance. He must point his toes straight ahead with feet parallel and his weight equally distributed on the big toes and heels. The distance between the snapper’s feet should be no wider than his shoulders. It is important to have a solid base, which allows him to lower his body to the ground. This creates a solid foundation to operate from. The snapper’s back should be flat with knees bent, forming a “Z” in the knees. Weight should be equally distributed between the insteps of the feet, ankles, knees and hips. Next, the snapper should lay his stomach on the thighs for support.
