Astrology Vs. Astronomy Name: Pd. Date: Astrology vs. Astrono my Astrologists claim that a person’s character and destiny can be determined by the position of the sun, moon, and stars at the time of his or her birth. A person’s sign is the constellation that the sun is in at the time of birth. To say that the sun is in a sign is to say that the constellation, the sun, and the earth are in a straight line. Astrologists use 12 constellations, found in a circle around the sky. The dates that the sun is in each constellation vary by approximately 4 ½ weeks, and have not changed for millennia. Astronomers know that the sun actually travels through 13 constellations, and that the sun stays in each constellation for a different amount of time, depending on the size of the constellation. Astronomers also know that the direction the earth is pointing in changes slightly over a thousand years, so the position of the constellation the sun is in has changed slightly. Each personality type (which has both positive & negative qualities) matches an astrological “sun” sign. 1. My birthdate is _________________. My partner’s birthdate is _________________. 2. Ask your partner questions about themselves for a few minutes so that you can judge what personality type they are without asking them specific questions about character traits listed. I am personality type ____. My partner is personality type ___. 3. After the personality number for each sign is revealed and given you your own zodiac tables, write down which signs both of you actually are, and if you match: Sign you guessed: You: Your Partner: Actual sign by birthdate: You: Your Partner: Does this Match?(Yes or No) You: Your Partner: Answer these questions!: 1. If the stars really controlled your personality, how often should you be right at matching the zodiac sign to the personality? [What percentage?] 2. If personality traits were chance/random, how often should you be right based on the signs of the zodiac? [1 of of every ____. What percent?] 3. What percentage of people in this class picked the correct sign for themselves? 4. Does astrology really determine your personality? Explain how you can tell. 5. Why might a person think that his or her horoscope seems to be true? This belt is considered special because it is where the sun, the moon, and the planets all move. The word zodiac means “circle of figures” or “circle of life”. As the earth revolves around the sun, different parts of the sky become visible. Each month, one of the 12 constellations show up above the horizon in the east and disappears below the horizon in the west. If you are born under a particular sign, the constellation it is named for can’t be seen at night. • The Zodiac: Comparison of the Ancient Greek Mythology and the Popular Romanian Beliefs
THE ZODIAC: COMPARISON OF THE ANCIENT GREEK MYTHOLOGY AND THE POPULAR ROMANIAN BELIEFS DOINA IONESCU *, FLORA ROVITHIS ** , ELENI ROVITHIS-LIVANIOU *** Abstract : This paper intends to draw a comparison between the ancient Greek Mythology and the Romanian folk beliefs for the Zodiac. So, after giving general information for the Zodiac, each one of the 12 zodiac signs is described. Besides, information is given for a few astronomical subjects of special interest, together with Romanian people believe and the description of Greek myths concerning them. Thus, after a thorough examination it is realized that: a) The Greek mythology offers an explanation for the consecration of each Zodiac sign, and even if this seems hyperbolic in almost most of the cases it was a solution for things not easily understood at that time; b) All these passed to the Romanians and influenced them a lot firstly by the ancient Greeks who had built colonies in the present Romania coasts as well as via commerce, and later via the Romans, and c) The Romanian beliefs for the Zodiac is also connected to their deep Orthodox religious character, with some references also to their history. Finally, a general discussion is made and some agricultural and navigator suggestions connected to Pleiades and Hyades are referred, too. Keywords : Zodiac, Greek, mythology, tradition, religion. PROLOGUE One of their first thoughts, or questions asked, by the primitive people had possibly to do with sky and stars because, when during the night it was very dark, all these lights above had certainly arose their interest. So, many ancient civilizations observed the stars as well as their movements in the sky.

Astrology & Astronomy 4. Astrology & Science 5. Conclusion : the success of Astrology and the role of Science • References The influence of celestial bodies on Earth has several obvious manifestations : life on Earth depends on the Sun, seasons are linked to its position in the sky (due to the non–perpendicularity of the Earth’s rotation axis with respect to the ecliptic plane), … Seasons … ocean tides are controlled by the position of the Moon (via its differential gravitation) and of the Sun, and eclipses are due to Sun–Moon–Earth alignments. Solar eclipse High/Low tides Astrology extrapolates these factual influences by postulating that the positions of the Sun, Moon and 8 planets* other than Earth (hereafter the « luminars ») with respect to the sky background, as well as with respect to each other, influence terrestrial events and human psychology and destiny. *wandering celestial bodies Apparent trajectory of Mars as seen from Earth, and explanation The position of luminars is considered - relative to the tropical zodiac, defined by Hipparchus* : 12 « signs » dividing in 30° sectors the band of constellations upon which the motions of the Sun and planets are projected during the year, with an arbitrary origin at the vernal – spring – equinox (γ), and - relative to the « houses », a local reference frame dividing the local sky in 12 sectors.

Dreshkamsha: "One third of a Rashi is called Dreshkamsha. These are totally 36, counted from Mesha, repeating thrice at the rate of 12 per round. The 1st, 5th and the 9th Rashi from a Rashi are its three Dreshkhamsha and are, respectively, lorded by 1. Narada, 2. Agasthya 3. Durvasha." The meaning of the word DRESH – KANA DRESH mens seeing or visualizing objects which are apparent or hidden (obscure) in nature. KANA means corner or trine (Trikona). Therefore, Dreshkana represents the varga (division) where the signs, trine to each other, convey apparent as well as hidden personality and nature (swaroopa) of the native. • Claudius Ptolemy: Tetrabiblos
CLAUDIUS PTOLEMY: TETRABIBLOS OR THE QUADRIPARTITE MATHEMATICAL TREATISE FOUR BOOKS OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE STARS TRANSLATED FROM THE GREEK PARAPHRASE OF PROCLUS BY J. M. ASHMAND London, Davis and Dickson [1822] This version courtesy of http://www.classicalastrologer.com/ Revised 04-09-2008 Foreword It is fair to say that Claudius Ptolemy made the greatest single contribution to the preservation and transmission of astrological and astronomical knowledge of the Classical and Ancient world. No study of Traditional Astrology can ignore the importance and influence of this encyclopaedic work. It speaks not only of the stars, but of a distinct cosmology that prevailed until the 18th century. It is easy to jeer at someone who thinks the earth is the cosmic centre and refers to it as existing in a sublunary sphere. However, our current knowledge tells us that the universe is infinite. It seems to me that in an infinite universe, any given point must be the centre. Sometimes scientists are not so scientific. The fact is, it still applies to us for our purposes and even the most rational among us do not refer to sunrise as earth set. It practical terms, the Moon does have the most immediate effect on the Earth which is, after all, our point of reference. She turns the tides, influences vegetative growth and the menstrual cycle. What has become known as the Ptolemaic Universe, consisted of concentric circles emanating from Earth to the eighth sphere of the Fixed Stars, also known as the Empyrean. This cosmology is as spiritual as it is physical.

  • The Natural Zodiac: the Nature of the Archetypes in Evolutionary Astrology
The Natural Zodiac: The nature of the archetypes in Evolutionary Astrology. An introduction to the teachings of Jeffrey Wolf Green by Mark Jones, U.K. Pluto School, May 2003. The Zodiac itself represents or incorporates the totality of consciousness in human form on the earth in space-time reality. All of our human experience within the relative universe is contained within the 12 signs of the Zodiac. The next central point to understand is that from the perspective of Evolutionary Astrology there is no essential difference between a planetary embodiment of an archetype or that of a house cusp or planet – in simple terms, with the example of the first archetype Aries - there is no difference between the sign Aries, the first house and the planet Mars. They all carry some essential quality as the first of the twelve – they all share an essential similarity. What you are actually looking at when you look at a chart is how any given consciousness is structured. The 12 archetypes provide energy and quality within a multiplicity of possible interactions with each other to create the diversity of possible experience in life on earth. Rather like DNA the 12 strands or archetypes of the zodiac provide a blueprint for all experience. ARIES Aries is a Cardinal, Fire and Yang archetype. This correlates with the nature of energy moving outwards from the center, projected energy (whereas the Yin archetypes correspond to energy returning to the center). Whilst the Yin/Yang dynamic of the signs represents the natural polarity of our universe, the trinity of Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable signs adds a further dimension to the type of energy expressed.
