ii A Welcome Message From The Chairman of the 2000 MARC National Meet

Dear Fellow MARC Members:

The Colonial Virginia Model A Ford Region cordially welcomes you to the 2000 MARC National Meet in Williamsburg, Virginia. Since this meet is the first MARC National Meet of the new millennium and in considera- tion of our theme “Y2K IN YOUR MODEL A”, we established an overall goal of making your experience here in Williamsburg, Virginia the most memorable possible. A number of individuals in our region have volunteered a significant amount of time and energy to accomplish this goal. A special thanks is extended to everyone outside our region who invested their time and energy in helping with this project.

A number of major decisions were made by our board of directors to make this meet very special. First, the selection of the location of the meet host and overflow hotels within the colonial portion of Williamsburg was of major importance. This accomplishment provides everyone staying in the designated hotels the opportunity to enjoy the colonial ambiance of Williamsburg within a short walking distance of the hotels. Second, we decided that a very special raffle item would be desirable to commemorate the 2000 Marc National Meet. A fully restored 1928 Ford Model A Pickup Truck was selected; the first time a major item of this quality and value has been raffled off at a MARC National Meet. Third, our mandatory tour was carefully designed to use one of the most scenic roads in our country, the Colonial Parkway, connecting Yorktown and Jamestown via Williamsburg. There will be a minimum of stops and delays on the tour with a luncheon at our destination, the Carter’s Grove Plantation, which overlooks the beautiful and serene James River. And finally, a major high point of the meet will be the “Model A Day at Busch Gardens” beginning at 10:00 AM and including a buffet dinner within the park following the closing of the park to the general public at 6:00 PM. The MARC admission price is half the general admission price.

Please stop by the hospitality area for light refreshments or if you have any questions regarding directions, dining suggestions, points of interest, etc. Also, if you require any additional information or assistance, feel free to stop any of our members who will be wearing distinctive polo shirts and badges.

On behalf of the Colonial Virginia Model A Ford Region, we all hope you will have a most enjoyable stay with us.

Sincerely,

Barry R. Wise Chairman, 2000 MARC National Meet

introduction 1 A Welcome Message From The Colonial Virginia Region

THE COLONIAL VIRGINIA REGION welcomes each of you to the MARC 2000 National Meet and especially to Williamsburg, Virginia. We are pleased that you have chosen to join us at the first national meet of this millennium.

We hope that your stay in Williamsburg and the surrounding areas will be a pleasant and interesting experience, one that you will remember many years into the future. As you will see during your stay here, there is much to see and do in “The Historic Triangle” comprised of Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown. It was in this very triangle of the new world that our country and government actually began. The area is rich in history and has some of the best and most interesting colonial restorations that you will find anywhere. It is our sincere hope that, in addition to attending the various meet events, you will find time to drive your Model A Ford to some of the historical plantations and sites in and around Williamsburg-of particular interest is Yorktown Battlefield where our independence was won.

This area has something of interest for everyone of all ages; history, science museums, beaches, theme parks and golf courses. Whatever your pleasure, it is nearby.

Throughout the week you will be able to identify members of the 2000 MARC National Meet staff by their distinctive light yellow colored shirts. Please feel free to ask them for assistance on any matter for which you may need help.

Again, I thank you for joining us and hope to meet each of you during your stay here.

On behalf of all members of the Colonial Virginia Region, I wish you a pleasant fun-filled week and a safe journey home.

Sincerely,

Bill Lee President

Mandatory Tour The Mandatory Tour will be held on Thursday, June 8th, and will encompass the entire National Park Service Colonial Parkway. Line-up will be based on your registration number and will begin at 8:30 A.M. on Nicholson Street in the heart of historic Colonial Williamsburg. The 54-mile tour route and was selected to provide participants with a continuous, unobstructed scenic drive for the entire tour. (A separate sheet will be provided detailing information for the short, 8 mile tour for Fine Point, AA Commercial and any other A’s that don’t want to take the longer tour). While traveling through a diverse environment, the Parkway provides MARC members the opportunity to view open vistas of the York and James Rivers, as well as shady passageways through pine and hardwood forests. The tour route was specifically designed to provide each participant with the unique experience of viewing all of the Model A’s traveling on the tour. The tour will stop for a picnic lunch on the grounds THURSDAY of the majestic Carter’s Grove Plantation overlooking the broad expanse of the James River. Following lunch, tour participants are invited to tour the grounds before returning to the host hotel via the picturesque “Williamsburg Country Road This tour is a requirement for Model A’s that have undergone Fine Point and Touring Class judging on Wednesday and is the final qualification for all car judging awards. Generally, all Model A’s take this tour and will receive a red or blue ribbon for participation. The Blue ribbon is for Authentic Model A’s passing a 14-point authenticity check. If you have requested a blue ribbon we recommend you have the authenticity check accomplished at the repair tent next to the Texaco station on Tuesday or Wednesday from 8 to 4 PM. A 14-point inspection team will also be located at the Carter’s Grove Plantation picnic area following the Mandatory Tour on Thursday tour for those that will not be able to complete their check on Tuesday. Please read your Tour Booklet carefully for detail information concerning the Mandatory Tour. The Mandatory Tour will terminate at Carter’s Grove after driving from Colonial Williamsburg to Carter’s Grove on the “Country Road”. EVENTS:

22 Carter’s Grove Carter’s Grove plantation was a bequest from Robert “King” Carter of Corotoman plantation to his grandson, Carter Burwell. “King” Carter’s will stated “that this estate in all times to come be called and to go by the name of “Carter’s Grove.” Carter Burwell built the main house between 1750 and 1755, and it remained in the Burwell family until 1838. In the seventeenth century, the property was known as Martin’s Hundred. It was the site of the short-lived settlement of Wolstenholme Towne, which was established in 1619 near the James River just southwest of the mansion. Wolstenholme Towne was abandoned after most of its inhabitants were killed in the Indian massacre of 1622. Carter Burwell lent funds for the passage to America of Richard Baylis, an English artisan who created the interior woodwork of walnut and pine. Reflecting the unerring taste and skill of the master craftsman, the paneling in the entrance hall with its exquisite composition and detail is considered to be the most significant feature of the house. The preservation of Carter’s Grove during the Civil War is remarkable since a number of similarly exposed James River homes were destroyed by Federal gunboats. Describing how large contingents of Union forces marched past tidewater plantations, the Prince Indiana’s deJoinville recounted that “the inhabitants would hang out a white flag. Colonial Williamsburg’s renowned chef will introduce the secrets of making beautiful party hors d’oeuvres, pastries, entrees or desserts based on specialty Tidewater area recipes. Computer Seminar The computer seminar is designed as a basic introduction to computers and a demonstration of how the computer can be used in conjunction with the internet to access a wide variety of information relating to the Model A. This introductory seminar will commence with a presentation of computer basics-the computer, keyboard, monitor, printer and the necessary hardware and software to get up and running on the internet. The presentation will show actual internet sites related to the Model A and actual information that may be obtained by the Model A enthusiast while sitting in his or her own home working with a computer. The presentations will be given in the Cascades on Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 AM. Colonial Floral Seminar The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation will give two Floral Arranging demonstrations during the 2000 MARC National Meet. The first demonstration will be held on Tuesday at

FRIDAY 1 PM. The second demonstration will be held on Friday at 11 AM. Both demonstrations will be held in the Garden Room at the Cascades. Colonial Williamsburg floral designers will demonstrate how to create traditional colonial centerpieces and table flower arrangements using natural ingredients. Era Dancing Lindy Hop performers and instructors, Buck and Teresa revive the original swing dance. The Apostles of Swing, Buck Smolow and Teresa Egan, are bringing the Lindy Hop back to its roots. Through performance, lecture, instruction and video presentation, Buck & Teresa have brought swing dancing into the lives of thousands. The dance that started the swing craze the first time around in 1926 is back for the new millennium. The Lindy Hop, these days often referred to as “The Gap Dance” thanks to the popular TV ad, was started in Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom by a black teenager - Frankie Manning. The dance spread through the black community and soon crossed over into the white community as the jitterbug. Buck and Teresa have trained with the best swing dancers in the world and take great pride in being renowned Lindy Hop instructors. “We faithfully recreate the same dance that began the swing era in Harlem in the 1920s and spread to the world throughout the 1940s. A fun part of our program is the presentation of video showing Lindy Hop in the movies through the years. It opens up time for discussion and question and answer. We really enjoy meeting folks who did the dance the first time around who relate stories to us about how swing dancing was a part of their file - and still is in many cases. We love to hear about the ballrooms and crowds from days gone by because we are actively involved in bringing those crowds back. It was a more genteel age and we appreciate that.”

ost Model A Clubs have their own guru—-that one individual who seems to have come out of the womb with a 3X spark plug in one hand and a wrench to turn it in the other. This is the guy in the club that we all call when, despite our best efforts and our male (or female) egos, we just have to ask for advice. MWell, we in the Colonial Virginia Region are most fortunate in having such an individual in our club and his name is Bob Williams. In this area his name is synonymous with Model A Expert—-the guy who knows everything there is to know about Model A’s and who we all pray is in the tour when we break down on the road. Bob was born 71 years ago in Poquoson, Virginia-just down the road a few miles from Williamsburg. As a youngster in the early ‘40s Bob worked at an assortment of odd jobs. One of these jobs was for a local grocer who had a 1930 Fordor Sedan, a ‘41 Desoto and a ‘42 Ford panel truck. Since most of the men of driving age were away at war Bob learned to drive well before he could get a drivers license and helped deliver groceries to local homes and fishing boats. In 1946 Bob went to work for the local Ford garage where, on rainy days the local farmers LEGEND would bring in their Model T’s, Model A’s and other cars for an oil change and a grease job. Bob greased the cars, changed the oil, fixed flat tires and pumped gas and started acquiring the vast knowledge of automobiles and, in particular, Model A’s, that he would so very fre- quently put to good use over the ensuing years.

A Bob’s first car was a Town Sedan with 40,000 miles on it. This beautiful (in Bob’s eyes) car had been sitting in a farmer’s barn for two years, with a clutch that was stuck in gear. Using Bob’s bosses ‘31 AA wrecker the car was towed to the garage where it was made ready for the road in no time at all. “Most At age 15 Bob went to work at NACA (now NASA), having faked his age (told them his people birth certificate had washed away with the tide in 1933 !!) and told them he was 16. One of Bob’s more interesting experiences occurred about a year later when he actually towed a would have broken down Pepsi Cola truck to the garage with his Model A—-in first gear all the way. A year or so later at age 18 Bob met a beautiful young lady named Mazie Benthall who to live three worked at NACA and had an office right next to the water cooler. Bob found himself drink- ing an inordinate amount of water—far more than anyone else in his group and it seemed to lifetimes have had a very favorable effect on him—he proposed to and then married Mazie in 1948— his often stated best decision of his life. to enjoy In May of 1960 Bob got interested n Volvos and still drives them occasionally. Also about this time Bob started taking an interest in sports cars and in 1963 Bob entered upon his themselves racing career. His enthusiasm for the Model A permeates any gathering and he is the person that each of us looks to for the ultimate solution to our Model A problems. Probably the most often repeated phrase when area Model A enthusiasts gather is “let’s ask Bob” when there is uncertainty as to the right way to restore a car or we are stumped Bob Williams and his A 400 as to how to get it running again. Bob’s A-400 had been cut into four pieces when he found it and the friend who was with him said, “Bob your not going to buy that piece of junk-you’ll never put it together” Two and a half years later that “piece of junk” is Bob’s pride and joy and sits in the #1 spot in his Model A Room. This is the car that he drove to Jacksonville for the National Meet two years ago and it was the only A-400 at that meet. Another of Bob’s Model A’s that he is particularly proud of is his little red pickup truck which was another basket case when he purchased it in pieces a few years ago. Bob restored this truck and has driven it to four National meets. A particularly interesting twist in Bob’s long string of Model A purchases is his AA stake bed
