JOB DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT: FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS

JOB TITLE: THEATRE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR (Director of Co-Curricular Plays)

REQUIREMENTS: A. Education Level: Bachelor’s degree with teaching certification

B. Experience Desired: Degree in theater or course work in theatre. Experience in high school, college, community and/or professional theatre.

C. Physical Requirements: This position requires constant hand-eye and mind-eye coordination, hearing; intermittent repetitive motions with the wrists, hands and fingers, sitting, walking, and keyboarding. The position requires frequent lifting, bending, stooping, pulling, speaking, turning, grasping and carrying.

D. Other Requirements: Willingness to commit large amounts of time to produce a play. (Average is approximately 18 hours per week for 5-6 weeks.) Possession of extensive background in dramatic literature. Must be knowledgeable of current trends in theater.

REPORTS TO: Principal Assistant Principals Fine Arts Coordinator Theatre Coordinator (if not also holding that position)

RECEIVES GUIDANCE The above, plus other theatre FROM: professionals in city and state, i.e. other high schools, colleges and community theatre.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: 1. Chooses the play for production – reading a number of plays before making this choice. 2. Advertises auditions. 3. Selects the scenes for auditions. 4. Conducts auditions. 5. Prepares audition forms. 6. Casts the show – discussing with parents, if necessary, the rationale for casting choices. 7. Prepares the rehearsal schedule. 8. Blocks the play – before rehearsal. 9. Confers periodically with all designers of technical aspects of the show (set, lights, sound, costumes, make-up, etc.) 10. Reads through the show with the cast. 11. Conducts rehearsals with the cast. 12. Communicates interpretation of the show with the and technical designers. 13. Develops characters with the actors. 14. Conducts rehearsals. 15. Approves each aspect of the technical development of the show. 16. Approves all aspects of publicity design –posters, tickets, programs, T-shirts, etc. 17. Conducts warm-ups prior to rehearsals and performances. 18. Meets with and communicates to Fine Arts Coordinator on all items of travel, budget, standards, calendar and schedules. 19. Selects and trains an assistant director. Organizes and supervises the cast party at the end of the production. 20. Performs other duties as assigned.

B. Climatic Environment: Some District work areas are not climate controlled and are subject to extremes of temperature and humidity.

C. Hazards: Prepares actors to work safely in a environment, e.g. situations, break-away props, falls, etc

D. Work Year duty/extra pay positions are for a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Duties of the position may be performed any time during that time period depending upon the position/season.
