Cholera Epidemiological Week 15 (10 – 16 April 2017)
Situation report for acute watery diarrhoea/ cholera Epidemiological week 15 (10 – 16 April 2017) Cumulative key figures Highlights 10 – 16 April 2017 A total of 2,984 AWD/ cholera cases and 34 deaths (CFR– 1.1%) were reported during week 15 (10 – 16 April 2017) in 50 2,984 new cases in week 15 districts in 13 regions. Of these, 175 cases were reported from Iidale village(in-accessible) district Baidoa in Bay region, which 34 deaths (CFR–1.1%) in week 15 represents 5.9% of the total cases. There is a slight decrease in the number of new AWD/ cholera 51.9 % cases females cases and deaths reported – 2984 cases/ 34 deaths were 33.4% of cases are children under 5 recorded in week 15 compared to 3128 cases/ 32 deaths in years of age week 14. 50 districts reported AWD/ cholera New locations that have reported new AWD/ cholera cases cases and deaths are: Busul Village, Mintane, Saydhalow and Landanbal Village Baidoa district in Bay region, Abudwak Galinsor Village, Addado district Guriel Village, Dusmareb 28,408 cumulative cases since week 1 district in Galgadud region and Bulomarer Village district Kurtunwarey in Lower Shebelle region. Additional alerts were 558 cumulative deaths (CFR–2.0%) recorded from other regions or districts; verification by since week 1 to week 15 surveillance officers is ongoing. Situation update A total of 2984 AWD/ cholera cases and 34 deaths (CFR–1.1%) were reported during week 15 (10- to 16th April 2017) from 50 districts in 13 regions. Of these cases, 175 cases were reported from Iidale village district Baidoa in Bay which represents 5.9% of the total cases; Out of 10 stool samples collected from Bardere district, 6 have tested positive for Vibrio Cholerea. -

SOMALIA Food Security Outlook Update May 2015 Gu crops developing normally in South-Central KEY MESSAGES Figure 1.Projected food security In Jowhar District in Middle Shabelle and Sablale District in Lower Shabelle Region, outcomes, May to June 2015 flooding in the high-productivity riverine areas will likely lead to a below-average harvest and long delays in that harvest. This will likely increase local cereal prices, reduce agricultural labor demand, and lead to deteriorating food security outcomes between now and the delayed harvest in August. In pastoral areas, increased livestock production and values will likely result in increased access to milk and meat, increased income from milk sales, and better food security between now and September. Northwest Agropastoral livelihood zone will likely have a below-average Gu maize and cash crop harvest in July. Households will likely reduce food consumption between then and the Karan harvest in October. CURRENT SITUATION In mid-April, Gu rains started in South-Central. Since the start, average to above average rainfall was received in most parts of the country. Rains have refilled water catchments, shallow wells, and communal dams in rural areas, and they have Source: FEWS NET helped increase browse availability and improve grazing conditions. Figure 2. FSNAU Food Security Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit - Somalia & Nutrition Issued June 30, 2016 Quarterly Brief - Focus on Post Gu 2016 Season Early Warning KEY ISSUES Based on ongoing monitoring activities and the findings of the FSNAU’s rapid field assessment (June 2016) and climate forecasts for 2016 Hagaa (June - July) and Deyr (October - December), the Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) projects deterioration of food security conditions in parts of Central and Southern agricultural livelihoods of Somalia in the post-Gu period (July-December 2016). The foreseen deterioration is attributed to below average Gu harvest outlook as a result of unfavourable Gu rainy season, while Hagaa (June - July) seasonal rains are also expected to be below normal. In addition, next Deyr rainy season (October-December) is likely to be below average in most parts of the Climate country due to likely La Nina event. Markets • Flood-affected areas of Hiran and Middle Shabelle are likely to be most affected, particularly during the Hagaa dry season. Similarly, livestock-dependent coastal areas (Coastal Deeh Pastoral and Cowpea Belt) of Central, where poor households mostly own small ruminants, are also likely to see deterioration Nutrition in their food security situation due to the impact of poor Gu rains and anticipated unfavourable Deyr rainy season this year. Agriculture • On the other hand, recent Gu rains have helped to recover pasture, water and livestock conditions in pastoral areas in the Northwest, including the drought-affected areas of Guban and Northern Inland Livestock Pastoral (NIP) livelihoods. The agropastoral areas of Northwest, which were affected by drought over the past two years, are likely to see some improvements due to projected above average Gu-Karan rains (July-September) with a positive impact on major harvest in November. -

Protection Cluster Update Funded by: The People of Japan Weeklyhttp://www.shabelle.net/article.php?id=4297 Report 27 th January 2012 European Commission IASC Somalia •Objective Prote ction Monitoring Network (PMN) Humanitarian Aid This update provides information on the protection environment in Somalia, including apparent violations of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law as reported during the last two weeks through the IASC Somalia Protection Cluster monitoring systems. Incidents mentioned in this report are not exhaustive. They are intended to highlight credible reports to inform and prompt programming and advocacy initiatives by the humanitarian community and national authorities. GENERAL OVERVIEW Clan tensions resumed between Sool, Sanag Clan militias (SSC), including Dhulbahante clan militias and Somaliland forces in Buuhoodle district of Togdheer region after the Somaliland military launched an attack against the SSC militias and captured Buuhoodle town. The fighting resulted in a number of civilian casualties and over 2,000 displacements mainly within Buuhoodle district. Reports suggest that the majority of IDPs returned to their villages when the fighting ended. Following the tensions in Buuhoodle, the Somaliland forces were deployed in parts of Sool region to prevent Dhulbahante clan members from declaring a separate clan administration in the area, which could be perceived by Somaliland authorities as prejudicial to Somaliland’s sovereignty. Following the deployment, members of the Dhulbahante clan demonstrated in favour of creating a separate administration in Laas Canood town, but were faced with a police crackdown. Reports indicate that four civilians were wounded and over 60 people were arrested and detained by the Somaliland security forces. -

An appraisal of the ‘Dervish state’ in northern Somalia (1899-1920) By Markus V. Hoehne University of Leipzig May 13, 2014 ___________________________________________________________________________ The Somali Dervish ‘state’ was related to the Dervish uprising, that shook the British Protectorate and other parts of northern and also partly southern Somalia between 1899 and 1920. A ‘state’ implies a minimum of centralised and institutionalised power (i.e., a government), a territory and a population. The Somali Dervish state indeed featured a clear centralised governance structure, with Sayid Mohamed Abdille Hassan on top. The Sayid (which is an honorary title; the British called him ‘Mad Mullah’) was surrounded by a group of trusted commanders and advisors who were members of the Dervish council (in Somali called khusuusi). Together, the Sayid and the council controlled the military units. Islamic judges had the task of upholding law and order among the Dervishes and their kin. But clearly, Mohamed Abdille Hassan had the power to take the final decision in all matters he deemed important. The Somali Dervish state never had a clearly demarcated territory. The Dervishes operated between different temporary local centres (e.g., Aynabo, Buuhoodle, Eyl, Taleeh) in northern Somalia and, for a shorter period, had also stations in central Somalia such as Beledweyn. When confronted with superior colonial forces, their usual strategy was to retreat to the sparsely inhabited and arid hinterland. Also the population of the Somali Dervish state fluctuated. It consisted largely of the close patrilineal relatives and wives of the followers of Sayid Mohamed Abdille Hassan. Only temporarily did the Dervishes establish more permanent centres of power and ruled over larger areas.
