    Assistant / Associate Professor - Academic Gastroenterologist University Health Network, Sinai Health System, and University of Toronto The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and the Division of Gastroenterology of the University Health Network (UHN) and Sinai Health System (SHS) is seeking to recruit a permanent, full-time Clinician-Teacher, Clinician Investigator or Clinician in Quality Improvement in Gastroenterology. The successful candidate must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date will be on June 1, 2017 or to be mutually agreed upon The successful candidate must hold a MD and FRCPC qualifications or equivalent, be eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Gastroenterology and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. In addition, completion of a postgraduate degree such as a MSc or equivalent is required. The position requires an individual who has demonstrated excellence in advanced endoscopic skills which include being proficient in ERCP and associated therapeutic interventions with significant experience in hepatopancreatobiliary malignancy and liver transplantation patient populations. Excellent teaching abilities are also required. The combined Division of Gastroenterology of the UHN and SHS in Toronto is a group of 26 luminal gastroenterologists and hepatologists. The Division has active clinical and research programs in many areas of gastroenterology and hepatology including IBD, nutrition, pancreatic physiology, neurogastroenterology and motility, viral hepatitis, cholestatic and autoimmune liver diseases, fatty liver, portal hypertension, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver transplantation. SHS is a health care organization comprised of Mount Sinai Hospital, Bridgepoint Active Healthcare and Circle of Care as an affiliate, extending SHS’s continuum of care into home and community programs.

A biopsy is a procedure that removes a sample of your tissue so doctors can look at it more closely. A doctor with special training, called a radiologist, does the procedure.     REPORT FOR ACTION Inclusion on the City of Toronto's Heritage Register and Intention to Designate under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act - 100 College Street Date: August 7, 2020 To: Toronto Preservation Board Toronto and East York Community Council From: Senior Manager, Heritage Planning, Urban Design, City Planning Wards: Ward 11 - University-Rosedale SUMMARY This report recommends that City Council state its intention to designate the property at 100 College Street under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act and include the property on the City of Toronto's Heritage Register. The Banting Institute at 100 College Street, is located on the north side of College Street in Toronto's Discovery District, on the southern edge of the Queen's Park/University of Toronto precinct, opposite the MaRS complex and the former Toronto General Hospital. Following the Nobel-Prize winning discovery of insulin as a life- saving treatment for diabetes in 1921-1922, the Banting Institute was commissioned by the University of Toronto to accommodate the provincially-funded Banting and Best Chair of Medical Research. Named for Major Sir Charles Banting, the five-and-a-half storey, Georgian Revival style building was constructed according to the designs of the renowned architectural firm of Darling of Pearson in 1928-1930. The importance of the historic discovery was recently reiterated in UNESCO's 2013 inscription of the discovery of insulin on its 'Memory of the World Register' as "one of the most significant medical discoveries of the twentieth century and … of incalculable value to the world community."1 Following research and evaluation, it has been determined that the property meets Ontario Regulation 9/06, which sets out the criteria prescribed for municipal designation under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, for its design/physical, historical/associative and contextual value.

"The recovery of over ten acres of land in the College-Elizabeth-Hayter-Christopher section of the historic 'Ward,' and the devotion of so large an area to the uses and requirements of a hospital is nothing short of an event in the history of this city." Over 90 years later, and after many significant medical events within the walls of Toronto General Hospital, particularly the main College Wing, the Lieutenant-Governor's words MaRS - 101 College St Health Heritage Report Page 2 Rutty, C.J. - August 2002 are again relevant to a significant new phase in the history of the former "Ward" site. The new mission will be very much entwined with the 101 College Street building, to be called the "Heritage Building," as the centerpiece of the redeveloped site known as the "Discovery District for Medical and Related Sciences," or simply MaRS. Since its official opening on June 18, 1913, and through most of the 20th century, the TGH College Wing stood at the centre of a dynamic discovery district not unlike the new "Discovery District" envisioned by MaRS.

    An Urgent Statement from Hospitals in the City of Toronto and the Regions of Durham, Halton, Peel and York GTA Hospitals Support Further Lockdown Measures December 20, 2020 - Today, on behalf of our patients, health care workers and staff, we are supporting the Ontario Hospital Association’s call for stronger lockdown measures from the Government of Ontario. Across the Greater Toronto Area, COVID-19 infections are continuing to rise, as are hospitalizations and intensive care cases. These trends show no sign of slowing – in fact, a surge in cases following the holiday season is expected to make the situation even worse. Our staff are caring for increasing numbers of COVID-19 patients in hospitals and assisting in other settings such as long-term care homes. They are also keeping up with the care needs of patients without COVID-19 and trying to make progress in the significant backlog of scheduled surgeries and procedures cancelled during the first wave. For many months now, these frontline health care workers have been devoting enormous energy and skill to caring for their patients, at the very epicenter of the pandemic. They are stressed and overstretched. This level of strain is simply not sustainable for much longer. We are seeing increasing numbers of staff becoming ill and not able to work – both with COVID-19 and other illnesses. While we are coping and planning for redeployment, we are seeing more illness and stress and hearing about the toll this is taking on people’s families. We recognize that lockdown measures are challenging for many members of our communities, but we cannot afford to put patients and health care workers at further risk.
