School or Community of Schools

Woolooware High School CITATION

Woolooware High School is a proud White Ribbon School.

The school’s program began several years ago when 2 students spoke to the principal and requested that they address the student body on the statistics about violence against women around the world. The students gained the support of the Student Representative Council and planned and submitted a proposal to the school executive. From this sprang their Breaking the Silence Program.

One of the highlights of the program is an annual walk by students around the local community to promote the message that violence against women is never acceptable. This simple but powerful initiative has now grown into the Sutherland Shire White Ribbon Walk. In 2016, the inaugural walk had approximately 4000 participants, including students from dozens of schools across the Shire.

The Sutherland Shire White Ribbon Walk is now an annual event coordinated by the local police, local council and the school.

It is a credit to the students and staff at Woolooware High School that their initiative has grown into such an important local community event.

Ms L Hennessy PDHPE Teacher

The team consisted of:- Josh, Zac, Brayden, Caleb, Will, Jax, Riley, Ben and Tristan.

Their first game was against Bulli High. The boys worked well together and were far more superior in both defence and attack. They defeated Bulli High convincingly 10-1.

The second game was against Lamberton High from the Hunter Region. This Region is well known to be very strong and past medallists in waterpolo. The boys were matched by the other team in defence and attack and fought to the very end. They were determined to prove themselves and narrowly defeated Lamberton 5-4. The boys had a two-hour break until the next game. If they won this match they were through to the medal playoffs.

This game was against Tuggerah Lakes. Tuggerah Lakes had to defeat us by a two-point margin to get through to the medal playoffs too. Three minutes into the game it was 2-0. The boys were trying so hard to cover every possible play. There was not much room for error. Although we dominated in possession we just could not get the ball in the goal. Unfortunately, the boys lost 6-3. They were eliminated by one point and their chances of going through to the medal rounds had ended. We were SOOOO CLOSE!

The boys took the defeat well and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship. They supported each other and encouraged one another throughout the game. The team Lamberton that we had beaten in our first game ended up with the silver medal. If only we got a few extra points.!!! Strive For Excellence Sydney East Under 15’s KO Waterpolo WOO HOO!!! It was a great day and learning experience for the girls.

The boys KO Waterpolo team had three games to play on the day. They were against, Sydney Boys, Port Hacking and Cronulla.

The boys won their first game easily against Sydney Boys 12-3. Their second match was a tough match against Port Hacking High. This is where the boys displayed their excellent attacking skills. Special mention to Ben who was amazing in goals stopping 90% of the balls that came hurtling towards him.

Their third game was just as tough against Cronulla. The boys displayed a high level of skill and teamwork, which resulted in a 3-1 win. Strive For Excellence

Peer Support Another activity conducted on the day was a creative building project where a group of 4-5 students would create an ensemble for their peer because they didn’t have an outfit for a fancy dress party. We used newspapers, Popsicle sticks, straws and coloured cardboard paper. The dressed students then had a fashion parade and showed off the outfits their peers created. The outfits showcased induced laughter and a communal feeling throughout the Year 9 students present.

The last thing the students participated in was a de-briefing session where the leading teacher of the group read through what a Peer Support leader is expected to uphold. Matters such as, what Peer Support is all about, how peer support works, what a peer support leader does, how to manage your group and what to do if a situation goes south. The peer support program overall, allowed the Year 9 students to work with other students they haven’t worked with and for them to grow socially, confidently and how to work with younger students. On Monday, 27 November, 64 self-nominated Year 9 students participated in a Peer Support training program. The Peer Support program was created to Stephanie & Georgia provide the new Year 7 students with a Year 9 Students relatable and friendly peer, to support them in growth and development in their new school community. The program also benefits the Year 9 students by allowing them to grow and develop skills such as: leadership, responsibility, time management, confidence, trust, curiosity, integrity, honesty, communication, flexibility, organisation, team work, positivity, problem solving, respect, and the ability to accept other’s opinions.

The training program involved different confidence building activities, like organising an activity for our peers. For example, Red Light, where the peer leader would call out a relatable statement and if you can do or like something that is stated you move forward a step; e.g. I can whistle, if the student could whistle they would move forward. The first student to reach the leader will then be able to read out a list of statements. Strive For Excellence

More Photos from Peer Support Strive For Excellence Tackling Bullying

On Wednesday, 29 November, we were visited by some Sharks players who talked to us about how to tackle bullying. The talk was organised by Sharks NRL representatives Huw Ellis, Kurt Capewell and Kate Mullally who assisted him in the talk. They talked us through the many types of bullying and backed it up with an educational video. The video taught us that bullying can happen anywhere, whether on the playground or at home. We learnt that 1 in 4 people get bullied and that only half of those people actually report it.

Bystanding is a term we learnt about throughout the talk. Bystanding is seeing someone being consistently bullied and not doing anything about it. A bystander may just sit and watch or encourage the bullying by laughing. Huw Ellis even shared his own bullying story, telling us that through that time he felt alone and isolated. People he thought were his friends bullied him about his hair. Even to this day he still carries the scars of the hurtful words people had said to him. He gave an analogy of how bullying effects people showing the students a piece of paper, untouched and unwrinkled, he began to crush the piece of paper and unfolded it, showing all the creases and scars that could not be reversed. They also showed us a few steps on how to stand strong in the face of bullying. The first was, stand up tall like the goal posts on a footy pitch. The second was, stay calm like a referee. Next, you should remain confident like the captain and leave all on the field. Lastly, report it. They demonstrated this technique during roleplays with the help of our peers. Kurt Capewell did not follow the these rules when a group of Year 7’s excluded him and he walked off in a far worse state then Kate Mullally, who, when presented with the same situation, dealt with it by using the methods above.

Cronulla Sharks are actively trying to stop bullying. Bullying is a huge problem and must be stopped. We are so thankful we have this oppurtinity to be educated on some serious issues in our society by such influencial people.

Dont be a bystander. Anyone can be a hero.

Year 7 & 8 Extra Curricular Dance participated in Sydney Stars on Show on Saturday 4th October. Their Lyrical piece placed 1st and Hip Hop placed 2nd. Both teams received a distinction score! Our program is non-audition based, giving all our junior students the opportunity to perform. Special thanks to guest teacher and choreographer Jenna Taylor for her contribution to the team this year.

“Sharp Short Dance, is an audition only based choreographic competition, inviting aspiring young dance choreographers and performers 21 years and under to present a short dance work showcasing their talents.

The festival inspires and educates young performers to strive for their own artistic excellence and encourages active participation in dance at all levels and styles”.

Year 9 Dance students Hollie and Taylor were also accepted, however did not participate due to school commitments. Congratulations to our girls on this fantastic achievement!

Just like these young performers, ex-student Deirdre-Murray Wallace participated in many opportunities through our dance program. She graduated in 2016, placing 1st in the State for HSC Dance.

This year, Deirdre graduated from full time Dance under Village Nation, working with a number of Industry professionals. The performance was fantastic and our Year 9 Dance students were privileged to have worked with her earlier this year as guest teacher.

Deirdre’s biggest encouragement is for our dancers to take as many performance opportunities as possible and develop a willingness to learn all the aspects of dance.

Our student achievements move beyond our school and we are proud of them.
