Trebalo je malo vremena, nekoliko »umjetničkih« ispada i dosta teškog rada (tuđeg, ne mojeg), kako bismo ponovo pokrenuli The Regent Esplanade časopis, no smatrali smo da je važno da to napravimo kako bi se ‘naš glas ponovo čuo’. Trenutak je za nas idealan, jer ove godine slavimo još jednu veliku obljetnicu hotela Esplanade. Uz 85. godišnjicu hotela pripremili smo članak o povijesti Esplanade, primili smo dosta česti ti ki od naših uvaženih gosti ju i prijatelja, te iskoristi li priliku da zavirimo u knjigu gosti ju, kako bismo za vas izdvojili nama najdraže komentare poznati h i slavnih, koji su sve ovo vrijeme ovdje odsjedali. Naš je običaj da budemo diskretni, kada su u pitanju gosti , a naročito oni slavni, no za ovu prigodu morali smo napraviti malu iznimku, ali smo pri tome pazili da ne budemo indiskretni. Personally, I believe that the Ulysses Theatre has developed into a very serious theatre over ti me as more and more people have become in- volved in it. Of course, there’s another side to this story and that is a shameful story about the very limited resources which the Ministry of Culture is will- ing to provide for our theatre. I really think that someone needs to say that publicly and all that is related only to the fact that those who have the money and who are responsible for creati ng the Croati an cultural scene (minister Biškupić and the people around him) actually disap- prove of the idea of such a theatre. They are simply unable to separate their politi cal preferences or anti pathy for projects by an individual art- ist or a group of arti sts. The Ulysses Theatre has become one of the most important cultural events during the summer season and minister Biškupić has never even seen a single play.

You have lived in the US for a number of years now. But, you visited the States as soon as you started studying acti ng at the Academy. During my fi rst semester at the Academy I stayed in the States for a month and a half with my fellow graduate students. We toured the enti re country: Los Angeles, Kansas City, Minneapolis, New York... I was very enthusiasti c at the ti me. Back then, in 1966, the States were magical. Why is that so? Who do you think is responsible for that? I have heard that people are protesti ng, and rightf ully so, asking for shops and restaurants to be opened on Sundays. I think that might be the reason. Please, don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the Church but it seems to me that the Church is meddling in an unac- ceptable way here in Croati a, not only in politi cs but in the way our lives are arranged. How is it possible that someone can have so much power over people to consciously create the way people should live their lives. 23
