Brošuru O 90 Godina Hotela Esplanade Raskošna povijest hotela Esplanade Od 1925. godine Esplanade Zagreb Hotel je najpoznatiji i najluksuzniji hotel u Zagrebu i regiji, a u travnju 2015. obilježio je okruglih 90 godina svojeg postojanja. Njegova bezvremenska otmjenost, elegancija i šarm kojima je davne 1925. privukao putnike poznatoga Orient Expressa i danas ga čine elitnim odredištem te kulturnom i povijesnom ikonom Zagreba. Poznat kao hram udobnosti i gastronomije, i u svojim devedesetim godinama drži korak sa suvremenošću, istovremeno njegujući harmoniju tradicije i prošlih vremena. Izgrađen za putnike orient expressa Početkom 20. stoljeća, dva najpoznatija hotela toga vremena su postala premala za sve veći broj putnika koji su stizali u Zagreb poznatim Orient Expressom. Kako bi se zadovoljile potrebe grada uesplanade razvoju, izgradnja novog, luksuznog hotela nametnula se kao prioritet. Hotel je trebalo izgraditi na širokom terenu (španj. ), u neposrednoj blizini željezničkog kolodvora – tada jedine poveznice s Europom i ostatkom svijeta - koji je bio jedna od postaja slavnog Orient Expressa na relaciji Pariz-Venecija-Istanbul. Godine 1917. je raspisan međunarodni natječaj kojem su pristupili brojni izvrsni arhitekti toga vremena, uključujući slavnog Švicarca Adolfa Loosa koji, međutim, nije pobijedio na natječaju. Pobijedio je Nijemac Otto Rehnig, čije je izvorne nacrte preradio Dionis Sunko, kojega danas smatraju arhitektom ovog remek-djela arhitekture “Belle Époque”. Gradnja najvećeg hotela u Zagrebu je trajala samo 26 mjeseci. Na svečanom otvorenju, 22. travnja 1925., okupilo se oko 200 uvaženih uzvanika, među kojima i zagrebački gradonačelnik Heinzel. Novinari su hotelu predviđali blistavu budućnost na međunarodnom planu, a među prvim gostima se našao i gospodin Glück (njem. sreća), koji je pobudio nadu da će se predviđanja i ostvariti. A tako je i bilo! Luksuzan, sofisticiran, otmjen Uistinu, prvi se gosti nisu imali na što požaliti jer je hotel bio luksuzan, sofisticiran, izuzetno ugodan i opremljen najnovijim dostignućima suvremene tehnike. Na raspolaganju im je bilo dvjesto soba s tekućom hladnom i toplom vodom, sto kupaonica, telefon u svakoj sobi, mnogobrojni apartmani i saloni, restorani s izvanrednom kuhinjom te raskošna plesna dvorana ukrašena jonskim stupovima i skulpturama. O tome koliku je ulogu Esplanade imao u tadašnjem društvenom životu najbolje svjedoči donedavno uvriježeno mišljenje da je “prekoračiti njezin prag doživljaj vrijedan spomena unucima”. Stoga ne čudi da je niz generacija sa strahopoštovanjem govorio o elegantnim i mističnim prostorima hotela. Zlatne godine esplanade Najčešći gosti Esplanade su bili novinari, u neprestanoj potrazi za zanimljivim ljudima i događanjima. Otmjeni balovi koji su se priređivali u Esplanadi dugo su smatrani najvećim društvenim prigodama u gradu. S obzirom na svoj imidž i priče o događajima koji se tamo odvijaju, Esplanade je postao učestalo mjesto odvijanja radnje mnogih pripovjedaka; jer hotel je, kako navode tadašnji znalci, “neodoljivo privlačio nezadovoljne žene i njihove ljubavnike”. Još se i danas pamti prvi striptiz na ovim prostorima, koji se dogodio na oproštajnoj zabavi nekog talijanskog grofa, kada su neke od prisutnih dama skinule odjeću i cipele i ostale samo u donjem rublju. Ovaj “najmodernije uređeni hotel u srednjoj Europi” privlačio je mnoge poznate osobe. Među prvim gošćama je bila i slavna zvijezda nijemog filma, malo kasnije kazališna i filmska glumica, Gitta Alpár, čiji su obožavatelji satima opsjedali hotel. Isto se ponovilo uoči dolaska Crne Venere, kraljice pariških cabareta, Josephine Baker. Popis poznatih gostiju u to vrijeme proširili su europski kralj cipela Bata, najveći filmski ljubavnik toga doba Vladimir Gajdarov, Lady Ashby, predsjednica Međunarodne alijanse za ženska prava, Charles Lindbergh, prvi čovjek koji je preletio Atlantik, te francuski pisac Jules Romains. I kraljevske su visosti voljele ovaj hotel: španjolski kralj Alfons XIII, iznimno bogati princ od Nepala, te već onda Anthony Orson bivši kralj Egipta, Abbas Hilmi, također su bili gosti Esplanade. Quinn Welles Ratne godine Prvih dana okupacije 1941. hotel je bio potpuno prazan: posljednji su gosti netragom nestali, ali uskoro su došli novi - njemački časnici. U hotelu se smjestilo glavno zapovjedništvo Gestapa i stožer Wehrmachta za Balkan. No, i u tim tmurnim danima, zabilježena je jedna svijetla točka: gostovanje poznatog opernog pjevača Beniamina Giglia. Nakon drugog svjetskog rata u hotelu je kraće vrijeme bila smještena javna kuhinja, ali već je početkom pedesetih godina započelo prvo veće renoviranje zgrade. Jedan od prvih gostiju u renoviranom hotelu bio je poznati talijanski operni pjevač Mario del Monaco, koji je zajedno sa suprugom odsjeo u Esplanadi 1957. godine. Nekoliko godina kasnije, Esplanade je uključen u svjetsku mrežu Inter-Continental Hotel Corporation. Zvjezdana prašina u esplanadi Ulaskom u visoko društvo najboljih svjetskih hotela započinju zlatne godine za Esplanade. Hotel postaje središtem društvenog i kulturnog života grada Zagreba, gdje se održavaju brojna događanja, stručni skupovi, modne revije, gastronomska natjecanja i sl. Od brojnih poznatih lica, koja su u proteklih četrdesetak godina odsjela u Esplanadi, teško je izdvojiti tek nekoliko. Tu su bili: Giuseppe De Santis, Anita Ekberg, Silvana Pampanini, Yul Brynner, Jack Palance, Rossana Podestà, Belinda Lee, Gérard Philipe, Moira Orfei, Orson Welles, Liv Ullmann, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Arthur Rubinstein, Domenico Modugno, Charles Aznavour, Maria Callas, Maya Plisetskaya, Arthur Miller, Francis Ford Coppola, Anthony Quinn, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Aram Khachaturian, Henryk Szeryng, Pelé, Curd Jürgens, Yves Montand, Simone Signoret, Stewart Granger, Erroll Garner, Ike i Tina Turner, Joan Baez, Cliff Richard, Gian Maria Volonté, Barbara Mikulski, Pablo Casals, David Oistrakh, Clay Regazzoni, Nelson Piquet, Bob Charlton, Ingemar Stenmark, Irina Rodnina, Fats Domino, Sir Rudolf Peierls, Morgan Fairchild, Bob Guccione, Woody Allen, Catherine Deneuve, Gary Oldman, Armand Assante, Michael York, George Soros, Éva Marton, Juan Antonio Samaranch, Sadako Ogata, Lucia Aliberti, Garry Kasparov, Susan Sontag, Eros Ramazzotti, Alain Finkielkraut, Jane Seymour, Omar VivienLeigh Eros Sharif, Paulo Coelho, B.B. Rudolf Kirchschläger, Matteotti Mário Soares, Maurice Couve de Murville, Aldo Moro, Martín Torrijos, Alain Juppé, Francesco Cossiga, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Turgut Özal, Süleyman Demirel, Hans-Dietrich Genscher i brojna druga poznata lica iz svijetaincognito politike. zabilježena su u knjizi gostiju. Naravno, bilo je i poznatih lica, državnika i političara koji su u hotelu boravili Miss Samantha Esplanade Fox Kompletnom renovacijom esplanadi vraćen prvotni sjaj Nakon teških ratnih dana u devedesetima, kada su u Zagrebu boravili uglavnom inozemni novinari i mirovne misije, Esplanade ulazi u novo životno razdoblje. Godine 2002. hotel gostima zatvara vrata kako bi uslijedila cjelovita renovacija. Zagrebački projektant i međunarodni stručnjaci za oblikovanje hotela sa sjedištem u Londonu, MKV Design, na čelu s nagrađivanom dizajnericom interijera Mariom Vafiadis, imali su misiju obnoviti hotel i vratiti mu prvotni sjaj. Pronalaženjem izvornih nacrta i fotografija,Art Deco te preprojektiranjem većeg dijela hotela, napokon se pronašla prava ravnoteža između neoklasicističkog i stila postojeće zgrade i uvođenja suvremenih elementa primjerenih jednom luksuznom hotelu na početku 21. stoljeća. Nakon dvije godine opsežnih i zahtjevnih radova i obnove, hotel Esplanade je predan na upravljanje luksuznoj međunarodnoj hotelskoj grupaciji te je svečano otvoren 11. studenoga 2004. pod nazivom Regent Esplanade Zagreb. U poznatom sjaju i novom ruhu, hotel nastavlja slijediti svoju nadaleko poznatu tradiciju diskretne i elegantne usluge na visokoj razini, koju su gosti oduvijek cijenili. Novi hotelski trendovi, savršen spoj bezvremenske elegancije i tradicije hotela sa suvremenim, dinamičnim dizajnom i funkcionalnošću lansiraju Esplanade u sâm vrh najluksuznijih hotela u regiji, ali i u svijetu. Esplanade ponovno preuzima titulu središta društvenog života grada, hotel postaje omiljeno okupljalište poslovnih ljudi, poznatih osoba, novinara i svih onih koji su štovatelji iznimne usluge i luksuznog ambijenta. Obnovljeni hotel je svojim raskošnim i otmjenim ambijentom, ali i poznatim šarmom, nastavio privlačiti brojne osobe iz javnog života grada i svijeta showbiza, poput glumaca, umjetnika, pjevača, političara i kraljevskih obitelji. Hotel je, tako, u posljednjem desetljeću ugostio brojne članove megapopularnih bendova poput Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Franz Ferdinand, U2, R.E.M., Backstreet Boys, Pet Shop Boys, Guns N’ Roses, Offspring, Snow Patrol. The hotel industry, hotels and hotel chains, as well as the features of the Croatian hotel industry from 2009 to 2017 are first defined. Next, the categories of catering establishments from the "hotels" category in the Republic of Croatia, reflecting the minimum technical conditions and structure of hotel deals from 2009 to 2017, are determined by means of examples of the five-star hotels in Zagreb.

Whilst perhaps not as breathtaking or glamourous as some of its European counterparts, there is a wealth of cultural and historical riches to be discovered from quirky museums, opera and music venues, galleries, a vibrant restaurant and cafe scene and, with its compact size, there is the added advantage that many sights can be explored by foot. Although little over two hours flying time from the UK, rather than a rushed city break, we have allowed for a five night stay thereby allowing time for some excursions out of the city to the surrounding areas as well as for some independent exploration and to enjoy the attentive service and luxury of the wonderful Esplanade Zagreb Hotel.

Loved by Orson Welles and often described as a “pocket-sized Vienna” or as a “fairytale capital”, the city features a unique blend of old and new. Whilst perhaps not as breathtaking or glamourous as some of its European counterparts, there is a wealth of cultural and historical riches to be discovered from quirky museums, opera and music venues, galleries, a vibrant restaurant and cafe scene and, with its compact size, there is the added advantage that many sights can be explored by foot. Although little over two hours flying time from the UK, rather than a rushed city break, we have planned a five night stay thereby allowing time for some excursions out of the city to the surrounding areas as well as for some independent exploration and to enjoy the attentive service and luxury of the wonderful Esplanade Zagreb Hotel.

    HOTEL HISTORY At the beginning of the 20th Century, the two best – known inns of the time became too small for the increasing number of travellers arriving in Zagreb on the famous Orient Express train. As the recently opened Palace hotel, on Zrinjevac Square, could not satisfy the needs of a growing town, the building of a new luxurious hotel became a necessity. The hotel was to be built on a large field, near the railway station – at that time the only link with Europe and the rest of the world. In 1917 the international tender was opened, with participation of many outstanding architects of that time, including the famous Swiss Alfred Loos, who however did not win the contest. The winner was a German Otto Rhenig, whose original plans have been alternated by Croatian well known architect Dionis Sunko, who today is considered as architect of this masterpiece of belle epoque building. The name “Esplanade”, meaning “field” has been given to the Hotel. A TOUCH OF CLASS The building of the hotel was completed in only 26 months. Nearly 200 guests were at the gala opening on the 22nd of April 1925. Among the “distinguished guests were the district prefect, the Mayor of Zagreb Mr. Heinzel, consuls, bankers, journalists and many others in that beautiful hotel with a touch of class”. Newspapers wrote: “The hotel is worldly appointed, luxurious, sophisticated, extremely comfortable and equipped with the latest achievements in modern techniques.
