This course is a part of the new Flexible, Open and Distance Education curriculum. The learning outcomes are student-centred and allows for them to be demonstrated and assessed. It maintains the rationale, goals, aims and principles of the national curriculum and identifies the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that students should achieve. This is a provision by Flexible, Open and Distance Education as an alternative pathway of formal education. The course promotes Papua New Guinea values and beliefs which are found in our Constitution, Government Policies and Reports. It is developed in line with the National Education Plan (2005 -2014) and addresses an increase in the number of school leavers affected by the lack of access into secondary and higher educational institutions. Flexible, Open and Distance Education curriculum is guided by the Department of Education’s Mission which is fivefold: to facilitate and promote the integral development of every individual to develop and encourage an education system satisfies the requirements of Papua New Guinea and its people to establish, preserve and improve standards of education throughout Papua New Guinea to make the benefits of such education available as widely as possible to all of the people to make the education accessible to the poor and physically, mentally and socially handicapped as well as to those who are educationally disadvantaged. The college is enhanced to provide alternative and comparable pathways for students and adults to complete their education through a one system, many pathways and same outcomes. It is our vision that Papua New Guineans’ harness all appropriate and affordable technologies to pursue this program. I commend all those teachers, curriculum writers, university lecturers and many others who have contributed in developing this course. DR. UKE KOMBRA, PhD Secretary for Education 4 GR 12 APPLIED ENGLISH U12.3 INTRODUCTION UNIT 12.3 INTRODUCTION This unit provides students with the opportunity to explore further issues and develop opinions through studying various non-fiction genres, at the same time enabling them to celebrate the lives of Papua New Guineans and their contributions to their culture and nation. Students develop critical understanding of the construction and conventions of biography and autobiography. They also gain insights into the lives, cultures and subcultures of other world citizens and challenges they have faced and overcome. Students extend their knowledge of genre types and their specific language use through reading, viewing and listening to non-fiction genres. 5 GR 1212 APPLIED APPLIED ENGLISH ENGLIS U12.2H U12.3 LEARNING OUTCOMES TITLE LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the unit the students: read texts containing representations of lives of well-known or inspiration figures and: - identify the narrative techniques employed - analyse features of autobiographical and biographical texts - identify and critically appraise language conventions and features used in autobiographical and biographical texts take notes on the distinctive features of a biography research a biography; evaluate the extent of truth and bias in the text compare difference in literary style and structure of a biography to style and structure used in fiction interview a person to gain biographical details apply narrative techniques and language conventions write a biography. revisit features of film making and make notes view a ‘biopic’ (a biographical film) summarise the gist of the film identify and evaluate how the film is biased in favour of or against certain characters use language structures and conventions appropriately and effectively to speak and write about the genres Timeframe You will need approximately ten weeks to finish this unit – six weeks for formal study and four weeks for self-directed study – to complete all the recommended activities and assignment. If you set an average of three hours per day, you should be able to complete the unit comfortably by the end of the assigned week. Try to do all learning activities and compare your answers with the ones provided at the end of the unit. If you do not get a particular exercise right in the first attempt, you should not get discouraged but instead, go back and attempt it again. If you still do not get it right after several attempts then you should seek help from your friend or even your tutor. Do not pass any question without solving it first. 6 GR 11 APPLIED ENGLISH UNIT 11.2 STUDY GUIDE Study Guide Below are the steps to guide you in your course study. Step 1: Carefully read through each module. In most cases, reading through a lesson once is not enough. It helps to read something over several times until you understand it. Step 2: There is an instruction below each activity that tells you to check your answers. Turn to the marking guide found at the end of each module and mark your own written answers against those listed under the Answers to Activities. Do each activity and mark your answers before moving on to the next part of the module. Step 3: After reading the summary of the unit module, start doing the Practice Exercise. Refer to the module notes. You must do only one practice exercise at a time. Step 4: Below each Learning activity, there is an instruction that says: Check your answers at the end of this unit before moving on. Turn to the marking guide at the end of the Unit and mark your own written answers against those listed under the Answers to Learning Activity. Step 5: When you have completed a practice exercise and marked your answers, go back to the module and correct any mistakes you may have made before moving on to the next Unit. Step 6: Study the entire module following Steps 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Here is a sample Study Timetable for you to use as a guide. Refer to it as a reminder of your study times. Shepard became a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright (Buried Child) and an Academy Award-nominated actor (THE RIGHT STUFF), while Dark was a homebody who supported himself with odd jobs. Through the decades, they stayed bonded by family ties. Dark married an older woman named Scarlett and Shepard married her daughter. For years, the two couples lived together, until Shepard broke away for a relationship with Jessica Lange in 1983, leaving Johnny to help father his first son. Nevertheless, he and Dark continued writing to each other, amassing hundreds of letters. Director Treva Wurmfeld began filming the two friends in 2010 during a period of transition and reflection for Shepard. At the time, he had quietly ended his relationship with Lange and agreed to publish his correspondence with Dark. The task required them to meet and sift through years of their shared history, stirring memories both good and bad.

APPLYING THE CONCEPT OF LIFELONG ACTION LEARNING Learning and Development for a Better World INTRODUCTION Ortrun Zuber-Skerritt’s contemporary ideas about Lifelong Action Learning (LAL) are grounded in the work of the Global University for Lifelong Learning (GULL). This chapter profiles Ortrun’s contribution to the LAL concept and to GULL’s work since its launch in 2007. The chapter also outlines how Ortrun’s personal and scholarly insights have helped to shape an inclusive approach to learning and development that encourages and strengthens low income and subsistence communities. As a vehicle for LAL, GULL aims to harness the potential of people to bring about positive change and in particular, greater self-reliance and financial independence. It is a self-directed process of learning and growth that can be shared with others. The importance of LAL is also reflected in sustainable transformation – a form of practical ‘self-help’ that yields on-going personal and community benefits. Ortrun’s substantial contribution to the literature on aspects of Action Learning and Action Research (ALAR) is internationally recognised and widely acknowledged by people all over the world who draw on her work. To shed light on why her contribution is so significant, I aim to highlight some of the ways in which Ortrun’s generosity of spirit, visionary thinking and commitment to action underpin her many books. The chapter opens with a personal tribute to Ortrun (modelling action leadership) and continues by tracing her contribution to GULL’s work with reference to five books she has authored, co-authored and edited since 2009.

Heban 2015 Abstract Since the earliest days of cinema filmmakers have experimented with the temporal nature of the art form during capture, manipulation, and exhibition. This thesis paper serves as a reflective documentation of the development process for the depiction of spatial and temporal scales in the animated short film Here Be Giants. Drawing from cinematic conventions and shaped by the malleable nature of the medium of digital animation a visual language was developed to convey qualities of scale and time essential to the narrative. A foundation for decision making during the development process was informed by project-based exploration including photographic, animation, and live action video as well as influences from cinema, video games, painting, and sculpture. The result of this reflexive research is a tripartite of categories of visual cues that include environmental and atmospheric elements (clouds, the sun, star trails, etc.), reminiscent subject matter (tree growth in seconds rather than years), and cinematographic considerations (depth of field and motion blur). These categories were used to develop representations of scales of time along the spectrum of human real-time to geologic time. The result is an animated short film with a purposeful visual language steeped in cinematic convention and reinterpreted through digital animation to actualize parallel narrative strands of a human interpersonal narrative and landscape mythology.
