Mathias Delplanque
MATHIAS DELPLANQUE Composer - Sound artist Born in 1973 in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). Lives in Nantes (France) Solo projects : Mathias Delplanque, Lena, Bidlo. Ensembles : The Floating Roots Orchestra, Keda, PLY. Collaborations : Rob Mazurek, Black Sifichi, E’Joung-Ju, Myra Melford, Shahzad Ismaïly, Ben Goldberg, Steve Argüelles, Charlie O, Sylvain Chauveau, Stéphane Garin, Stephan Mathieu, Julien Jacob, Iris Lancery, Jean-Luc Thomas, Toma Gouban, Alice Lewis, Charles-Eric Charrier, Cyril Secq, Orchestre du Ballet Royal du Cambodge, Jérémie Ternoy, Philippe Foch, David Sanson, Philippe Petit, Neil Carlill, Jérôme Paressant, Colyne Morange, Daniel Givens, D’Incise, Charlélie Couture, John Sellekaers, Emmanuelle Gibello, Eddie Ladoire, Guillaume Ollendorff, Soizic Lebrat, Christophe Havard, Groupe Entorse, Stomach Company, Tamara Stewart Ewing, Chicaloyoh… done under his own name (developed on records, performances or sound installations, and being either based on field recordings or containing instrumental parts) all directly deal with the question of the relation between space and music : music as architecture, spaces made out of sound etc… Initially a pure sequenced studio production, Mathias’s music transformed with the years into a more improvised and flexible creation. Showing a real interest in live electronic music, he developped a very personal approach of electronic improvisation, based on the use of multiple controlers that engage the body in the production of electronic performances. His live creations generally combine electronic sounds and acoustic instruments treated and sampled in real time. Mathias Delplanque won several grants (Cultures France, CNC, DRAC Pays de La Loire, Franco-American Jazz Exchange, French Embassy in India…), and made several artistic residencies in various countries (France, Canada, India, USA…). -
Revue De Presse-Mathias Delplanque
Mathias Delplanque Press review - Mathias Delplanque: “Passeports” Lena: “Circonstances / Variations 1-4” Mathias Delplanque: “Parcelles 1-10” Lena & The Floating Roots Orchestra: “Lost-Wax” Mathias Delplanque: “La Plinthe” Mathias Delplanque: “L’Inondation” Mathias Delplanque: “Le Pavillon Témoin” Mathias Delplanque: “Ma Chambre Quand Je N’y Suis Pas (Montréal)” Lena: “The Uncertain Trail” Lena: “Floating Roots” Lena: “Lane” Mathias Delplanque: “Passeports” (Bruit Clair / Cronica Electronica, 2010) Musicmachine (01/11) 2010 saw the release of Mathias Delplanques' Passeports, a study in the sounds of transportation. Using a combination of field recordings of various transit (harbors, planes and train stations) woven together with various organic, electronic and domestic sounds; Delplanque composes a hymn to movement. The seven pieces represented here are Passeport 1 through 7; each contains field recordings of transit from France (cities Nantes and Lille) and India (Dieppe). Bits of clicks, pops and beeps lace each piece; feelings induced range from chilling to sacred to mysterious. In fact that seems to pepper the entire release: mystery. Every bit of static and hum entwined with the sounds of wind, birds, conversations and urban sounds distorts our reality. You're never quite sure where you are, if it's an actual place or a fantasy. The field recordings are obviously real, but the way Delplanque constructs his compositions around them lends itself to a dream like aura. Nowhere is that better represented on "Passeport 5" an ethereal aura is transposed over wind, static and hum. It sounds simple but the affect on the listener has a spiritual quality to it. With "Passeport 1" we are embraced in a chilling setting, not menacing but again, mysterious. -
Spectrum Magazine Archive
- 1 - Spectrum Magazine (ambient / industrial / experimental music culture) Issue 4# review archive All reviews originally published in Issue 4#, released September, 2000 Spectrum Magazine Issue 4#: review archive - 2 - Ah Cama-Sotz (Bel) “Poison” 10”ep 1999 Old Europa Cafe Topics covered on this blue vinyl include the legacy of political assassinations under Stalin’s rule including the poisoning experimentations undertaken by Lavrenti P. Beria (lovingly referred to as Stalin’s butcher), presented as versions 1 and 2 of the EP’s title. Side A presents abrasive sweeping noise inter-spread with ominous treated keyboard sounds and treated/ echoed radio voices, creating a juxtaposition of deep atmospheres and intense sounds. Retaining the same sound throughout, layers of the sounds and intensity of tones are explored over the lengthy piece. This track reminds me to an extent of the noisier tracks that Predominance have created (just minus the vocals) on the Hindenburg 12”ep. More subdued overall Poison II works on the same dual sound principle yet has a more drawn out drone production and less abrasive sound textures explored over its likewise lengthy course. Lastly, the cover is nothing really to get exited about, with reasonably plain visuals printed on blue card. Ah Cama-Sotz (Bel) vs. Frames a Second (Bel) “Ankh-Deceptive Rate” 7” ep 2000 Nocturnus Another release by this Spectre side label that sees the collaboration of two artists, where each providing the other with source material, from which a track then recorded. Ah Cama-Sotz is up first, with ‘Ankh’ being a mid paced noise and beat fest, containing a certain groove to the static and programming. -

Mathias Delplanque Ma Chambre Quand Je N'y Suis Pas (Montréal
Mathias Delplanque Ma chambre quand je n'y suis pas (Montréal)" (Mondes Elliptiques 2006) Press review Heathen Harvest Today I’m going to behave. For the first time, in a very long time, I’m not going to swear in a review. Nor will I be sarcastic or use any childish humour to gloss over the fact my writing skills are non existent. There will be no abstract layouts or references to any artists living or dead. This I promise you. But I’m not doing this for you the visitor to these words. I’m not even doing it for myself. I’m doing this out of respect. I’m doing this for Mathias Delplanque. The artist who participated in the creation in one of my favourite pieces of music ever to have been released. I am, of course, referring to the supremely sublime ‘Hidden Doors’ CD release. A recording that anyone who dare calls themselves a music lover must own. ‘Ma chambre quand je n’y suis pas ( Montreal )’ is essentially an experiment in sound. I’m no good at the technical side of how these recordings are made so, with your approval, I’ll use the press release supplied with this recording to explain all. ‘The piece is based on the recording of “silences”, i.e. the recording of sound produced in spaces with no human presence. The sound of an “empty” Studio Cormier was therefore used as the material for the production of this piece. The sound takes were done during the quietest moments of the day, by means of microphones placed strategically throughout the Studio by the artist. -
“Le Pavillon Témoin” (Low Impedance 2007) Press Review
Mathias Delplanque “Le Pavillon Témoin” (Low Impedance 2007) Press review Monochrom.net (01/08) Somebody once said: if you have one riddle to solve, you will end up with two more. So, thinking in the other direction, maybe if you chose to build two riddles, you might end up with one solved? The world that Mathias Delplanque builds on “le pavillion témoin” (The Show House, transl.) is filled with enigma. First off, this is far from being unpleasant music. The instruments are finely tuned to each other, structures flow in and out as if from nowhere, the mix of electronics and analogue instruments is intriguing and sometimes the whole piece sets into a nice shuffle that is harmonious and warm, while at other places time seems to stand still while some sounds seem to hang in the air all by themselves. There are harmonicas, accordions, cellos, guitars and what else. But if you get beyond the point of music that runs by itself in the background while you ease yourself onto your lazychair with probably the latest novel by Paul Auster or Philip Roth, there are questions coming up that can not easily be answered. What do those children’s samples mean? Why the creaking floorboards and the tuned down vocals? The constant hissing in the background seems to get stronger, does that mean something is arriving? Okay, so judging from the song titles the idea is to walk around this house, but why then is there a “secret diary” attached? Can it really be spring on the moon? Why the melancholy? Does a house tell a story and is there a literary side to architecture and how would it connect to compositional art? Question do not always mean danger or evil, this is only something our culture has brought us to believe. -
