Modules included, inter allia, Strategic Theory, Conflict Transformation & Resolution, Defence Analysis, Research Methods in International Relations, Politics of the Environment. My dissertation investigated the role of Greece as a stabiliser in the Balkans and intra-Balkan relations through a comparative politics framework. 1998-2001 I obtained my Ph.D. from Exeter University, Centre for European Studies, under the supervision of Prof. Bogdan Szajkwoski, Director of the Centre for European Studies. My PhD Thesis focused on the institutional, structural and ideological problems for the application of a Common Foreign and Security Policy during the early decommunization process in south-eastern Europe and the application of incompatible policies. The actual Ph.D. Thesis title is “Greece, Common Foreign and Security Policy and the European Union: Interaction Within and Between a Zone of Peace & a Zone of Turmoil as an Explanatory Factor”. I used two case studies through which I looked into the ideological, institutional and structural problems that affected the formulation of a CFSP, with a view to pinpointing the divergence of national interests (based on a comparative politics approach), as well as the dissimilar strategic settings from which EU member states operated. The viva examiners were Professor Vesselin Popovski (Exeter University, then Master’s Coordinator at the Centre for European Studies) and Professor James Gow, external examiner (King's College, London, UK). September - November 2000 I was selected and participated in a seminar series on European integration- enlargement policies-EU institutions, organized by the European Commission and hosted by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I graduated successfully in November 2000. February - April 1999 I was selected and participated in a seminar series focusing on the European integration process, covering related areas such as politics, economics, institutional integration, environmental, social and EU governance issues and EU enlargement. The seminar was organized by the European Commission and was co-sponsored by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I graduated successfully in April 1999. Positions Held 2013 (September 1st) – June 2016 Head of the Department of International and European Studies, University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Greece (www.uom.gr) 2014-02/2017 Director, MA in European Union Youth, Education and Culture Policies. The program was originally titled European Union Youth Policies. Upon my taking over the duties and the changes I proposed to the Department and University Senate it was renamed in its actual tile and included a number of new courses expanding its focus on culture and education policies of the EU. 2013 – Associate Professor of European Studies, Department of International & European Studies, University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Greece 2006-2009 Assistant Professor of European Studies, Department of International & European Studies, University of Macedonia. I received tenure in September 2006. I got tenure in 2009. June–September 2005 Associate Research Fellow, Luxembourg Institute of European and International Studies, where I conducted research on the democratic deficit in the EU and its institutions. Sept. 2004-Febr. 2005 Visiting Lecturer, University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Greece, Department of International & European Studies. January 2002-2003 I worked as a translator and side editor for Tourikis publishers (GR). The latest work I translated in Greek and side-edited was World Politics 1945- 2000 by Peter Calvocoressi (originally published by Longman) Sep. 2001–June 2003 Visiting Faculty Fellow, Russe University (Bulgaria), Department of European Studies. My duties included teaching international relations theory, European integration theory (including transition issues-democratization), academic English and tutoring post-graduate students. I lectured in universities across Bulgaria on EU-Russian relations, European integration, transitional societies, democratization, human rights, meritocracy, less mature democracies and supported Local Fellows and students engaged in academic research. I also organized sessions on academic writing. I taught International Relations Theory and European Integration Theory to 1st, 2nd & 3rd year students at the Departments of European Studies and International Economic Relations. Teaching was taking place completely in the English language. I was responsible for the courses syllabi and the selection of teaching material. I also had administrative duties and acted as a liaison between the local university and Western European, Canadian and American universities with a view to establishing exchange programs on undergraduate and postgraduate level. Sept - Jan 2001 I taught academic writing (in English) at the Department of International Economic Relations (first, third and fourth year students), Russe University, Bulgaria. January-August 2001 Professor at the Greek Navy (“Kanellopoulos” Recruitment Centre) where I taught English military / naval terminology. Oct. 2000-Sept. 2001 Professor at the NCOs Naval Academy of the Greek Navy where I taught English naval terminology. My duties involved submitting proposals for the revised curriculum of the Academy. My contract was renewed for the 2001- 2002 year but I had to resign since I decided to accept a university position in Bulgaria.
