He is constantly working to expand the concept of the contemporary percussionist through adventurous programming, diverse commissions and engaging performances that feature exciting electronic and visual elements. Dr. Pate works to create an inviting concert environment grounded in personal emotions and topics where audiences can experience these works both visually and aurally in a way that is familiar to them. ERIC BYERS, CELLO FRIDAY, AUGUST 25 • 7:30-8:10 PM ANA Chapel PROGRAM: Esa-Pekka Salonen: Knock, Breathe, Shine Josquin De Prez: Canon Eric Byers: Sloth Canon Judah Adashi: My Heart Comes Undone Daniel Bjarnason: Bow to String Giovanni Sollima: Lamentatio BIO: Called “ideally eloquent” by the Los Angeles Times, cellist Eric Byers (of the Calder Quartet) enjoys a versatile career as a chamber musician, soloist, and composer. He has appeared on stages around the world including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Wigmore Hall, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Edinburgh Festival, Melbourne Festival, Ojai Festival, Kennedy Center, Disney Hall, Mozarteum, and Esterházy Palace. Recognized with top prizes at many competitions, Byers made his solo debut at age 18 with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Byers is a member of the Calder Quartet which was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2014. 2 3 4 5 MATT MCBANE AND FRIENDS FRIDAY, AUGUST 25 • 8:30-9:30PM ANA Chapel PROGRAM: MUSICIANS: All compositions by Matt McBane Matt McBane, violin and compositions within Eric Byers, cello Infi ll Aron Kallay, piano and keyboard Stabilize Devin Hoff , bass 56 Corey Fogel, drums Disjoined Bora Yoon, voice Fleet Well Ride Despite this Pain, it’s Spring BIO: Matt McBane is a composer whose music ranges from visceral rhythms and complex grooves to delicate melodies and rich textures, freely and intuitively incorporating a wide array of infl uences including: minimalism, experimentalism, European classical music, art rock, jazz, fi lm music, fi ddle music and electronic music. Matt is the violinist and composer for his Brooklyn-based band, Build, described by New York Magazine as a “rocking post-classical quintet which takes inspiration from minimalist chamber music, instrumental rock, modal jazz, and more.” Build’s two albums on New Amsterdam Records have been critically acclaimed and regularly played on radio stations across the country including NPR. Tonight’s concert will feature new music for the instruments of Build performed by LA-based musicians. DOLLSHOT FRIDAY, AUGUST 25 • 10:15-11:00PM St Michael’s Church MUSICIANS: Rosalie Kaplan, voice • Noah Kaplan, saxophone Devin Hoff , bass • Shawn Baltazor, drums PROGRAM: New music from their forthcoming album Lalande on Underwolf Records BIO: Dollshot is Rosie and Noah, husband and wife, a beguiling voice and a killer sax. Lalande, their forthcoming album, is a dark hallucination of delusional melodies stretched over grinding romantic chords, melted and retuned. A lush synthesis of dream-pop and death jazz, Lalande is an avant-noir fantasy of future and memory. 4 5 CHRIS DOUTHITT SATURDAY, AUGUST 26 • 12:30-1:00PM St Michael’s Church MUSICIANS: Chris Douthitt, guitar and voice • Rosalie Kaplan, voice Noah Kaplan, saxophone PROGRAM: Songs by Chris Douthitt BIO: Christopher Douthitt is a composer, guitarist, and songwriter from Spokane, Washington. His compositions draw on many traditions, from 20th century classical to American primitive guitar to free electronic improvisation to spoken word. He is interested in the use of electro- acoustic techniques to explore the intersections and points of tension between compositional architecture and visceral live performance. KAMINI NATARAJAN SATURDAY, AUGUST 26 • 1:15-1:45PM St Michael’s Church MUSICIANS: Kamini Natarajan, voice • Lalit Mahant, tabla Dr. Varsha Agarwal, santoor PROGRAM: Traditional Indian classical music to be announced from stage BIO: Kamini Natarajan’s musical journey started in central India with her mother Uma Natarajan. She started learning intricacies and nuances of Indian Classical Music since she was 6 yrs old. She would spend hours coming up with various improvisations at different time signatures. At the age of 10, Kamini started training under one of the most loved and respected musicians of India, Pt. Krishna Kant Shukla and Shri Rajeev Sharma. She graduated in Vocal music and was on Top position at her University. After years of rigorous training, Kamini started performing at various National level music festivals and her performances were adjudged as “Outstanding” by experts in the field. Kamini was one of the youngest graded artist from All India Radio, Indore (India). She regularly appeared in National Television of India. 6 7 PETER KUHN TRIO SATURDAY, AUGUST 26 • 2:00-2:40PM St Michael’s Church MUSICIANS: Peter Kuhn, saxophone • Kyle Motl, bass Nathan Hubbard, drums BIO: Peter Kuhn made a name for himself in New York City’s “Loft Scene” in the mid to late 70’s. He played and recorded with Frank Lowe, Billy Bang, Lester Bowie, William Parker and others in that rich musical period with his music documented on Hat Hut (“Ghost of a Trance”), Soul Note (“The Kill”) his own label Big City Records (“Livin’ Right”). His two 2016 releases on NoBusiness Records were received with great critical acclaim. The double CD “No Coming, No Going” (William Parker, Denis Charles, Toshinori Kondo and Arthur Williams) was included in the NPR critics poll “Reissue/Rara Avis 2016” category and “The Other Shore”, which featured this trio (Nathan Hubbard and Kyle Motl) was included on the Best Release of 2016 lists by Dusted Magazine, Jazz Right Now (Cisco Bradley), Jazz Right Now (Paul Acquarro) and SoundDiego’s Top 10 Jazz Albums of 2016 by Robert Bush. APERTURE DUO SATURDAY, AUGUST 26 • 3:40-4:20PM Heritage Hall MUSICIANS: Adrianne Pope, violin • Linnea Powell, viola PROGRAM: Andrew Tholl: hold still while the world turns* (2017) Noah Meites: Water and Power* (2016) Clara Ianotta: Limun (2011) George Aperghis Rasch (2001) * commissioned by Aperture Duo BIO: Aperture Duo curates fearless programs that explore new sounds, voices, and techniques through the lens of violin and viola chamber music. Founded in 2015 by violinist Adrianne Pope and violist Linnea Powell, Aperture Duo has quickly become a mainstay of the Los Angeles new music scene. Equally at home interpreting old and new music, Aperture Duo has commissioned over thirteen new works as part of a repertoire that spans W.A. Mozart to Salvatore Sciarrino. Aperture Duo’s performance credits include Tuesdays @MonkSpace, Carlsbad Music Festival, Music at Boston Court, L.A. Signal Lab, Synchromy, LA Downtown Art Walk, Brooklyn’s Home Audio Concert Series, Craft in America Center’s Window Concert Series, and the Eureka! MusicalMinds of California Graduate Student Conference. Aperture Duo has designed educational outreach concerts with wild Up and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and has been in residence at Avaloch Farm Music Institute. This season, Aperture Duo will be in residence at the California Institute of the Arts. 6 7 8 9 THOLL/FOGEL/HOFF SATURDAY, AUGUST 26 • 4:40-5:20PM Heritage Hall MUSICIANS: Andrew Tholl, violin • Corey Fogel, drums/percussion Devin Hoff, bass PROGRAM: Songs by Chris Douthitt Works from their album “Conditional Tension” on Populist Records BIO: The improvising trio made up of violinist Andrew Tholl, percussionist Corey Fogel, and bassist Devin Hoff have worked with each other through the years in various circumstances and combinations, including as members of experimental pop artist Julia Holter’s recording and touring ensemble. Their debut album CONDITIONAL TENSION was released in 2016 on Los Angeles’ Populist Records. The work documents the group on one evening, composed and recorded live at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, California. The performances captured on this album showcase the trio exploring two different states: “sensitivity to initial conditions,” recorded with acoustic and unamplified instruments, dives deep into a world of timbral possibilities, while “reasonable strategies for tense conjugation” utilizes electric instruments to allow for an onslaught of sonic experimentation. BORA YOON SATURDAY, AUGUST 26 • 6:00-6:40PM St Michael’s Church MUSICIAN: Bora Yoon, voice, viola, piano, toys, electronics PROGRAM: Bora Yoon performs her original works. BIO: Described by the New York Times as “mesmerizing” and by KoreAm Journal as “totally unique.. ..expect the unexpected,” Korean-American composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Bora Yoon is an interdisciplinary artist who conjures audiovisual soundscapes using digital devices, voice and found objects and instruments from a variety of cultures and historical centuries – to formulate an audiovisual storytelling through music, movement and sound. 8 9 All Relationships, Families and Ventures begin with the greatest of hopes and intentions Then life happens...
