Footnotes TIZNOW, away in good order, moved up early while working his way inward to force the pace, gained a slight advantage just prior to going a quarter, went along under careful handling while battling with ALBERT THE GREAT, was headed by that one approaching the end of the backstretch, regained the lead soon after, then, under strong pressure, gamely withstood GIANT'S CAUSEWAY through a long drive. GIANT'S CAUSEWAY, reluctant to load into the gate, had to be blindfolded when loaded by the assistant starters. He drifted out a bit at the start, recovered to follow the leaders five or six wide, was put to a drive nearing the five-sixteenths pole, gained about even terms for the lead outside of TIZNOW in the upper stretch, then wasn't quite good enough in a strong try. CAPTAIN STEVE settled inside soon after the start, was steadied behind horses on the first turn, saved ground while rallying into the stretch, angled outside of ALBERT THE GREAT in the final sixteenth and, while unable to threaten the top two, determinedly earned his position. ALBERT THE GREAT checked in tight while being bumped at the start, moved up rapidly along the rail to contest the early pace, battled inside TIZNOW along the backstretch, surged to the front gaining a slim lead nearing the far turn, fought gamely along the rail into upper stretch then weakened under pressure in the final eighth. LEMON DROP KID, well placed from the outset while maneuvering inside, raced forwardly into the stretch but came up empty. FUSAICHI PEGASUS, in hand early and seven or eight wide most of the way, failed to rally. CAT THIEF, bumped at the start and forced out slightly, was steadied on the first turn when LEMON DROP KID leaned in, then saved ground, to no avail. VISION AND VERSE tracked the leaders within easy striking distance while between horses four or five wide but flattened out when straightened for the drive. GANDER, in contention while five or six wide much of the way, was empty when the test came. PINE DANCE, outrun until approaching the stretch, came out eight wide entering the stretch but failed to produce a closing response. DUST ON THE BOTTLE trailed until the stretch and passed tired rivals. GUIDED TOUR, in tight at the start, was checked nearing the first turn while in behind rivals, was a bit rank and steadied sharply entering the backstretch, then failed to seriously menace. GOLDEN MISSILE came out at the start bumping CAT THIEF, settled in behind horses four wide and gave way readily nearing the stretch.
