The 4-year-old son of Candy Ride (ARG), saddled by Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen , won for the third time in his last four races and the Stephen Foster victory secured the colt a starting spot in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (GI) at California’s Del Mar Race Course on Nov. 4. The race was part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In Classic Division” series of races, which awards winners of its races an automatic berth in Breeders’ Cup Classic along with traveling expenses for the journey to Southern California. Gun Runner covered the Stephen Foster’s 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:47.56 – the fifth-fastest running of the Stephen Foster. Funny Cide’s Epic Kentucky Derby Victory is Ten Years Old By Bill Heller Can it be ten years since a three-year-old gelding named Funny Cide, and a yellow school bus carrying a group of high school friends who owned him, rearranged the racing industry’s position on New York- breds? “I don’t believe it,” his retired Hall of Fame jockey Jose Santos said Tuesday. “It went by too fast.” Funny Cide’s trainer, Barclay Tagg, agreed: “I do have trouble believing that.” Asked what’s the first thing that comes to his mind when someone asks him about Funny Cide, Jose said, “That he was the best three-year-old in my racing career.” These days, Jose has a new career running a feed company, Instride International, which began operating in 2012 and now serves three Florida tracks: Calder, Gulfstream Park and Palm Meadows. “Basically, I’m running the whole thing,” Jose said. “I’ve been selling to the trainers. They are friends of mine.” His client list includes a bunch of New York trainers who winter in Florida, including Todd Pletcher, John Kimmel, Linda Rice, Rick Violette and John Terranova. Funny Cide, a son of Distorted Humor out of Belle’s Good Cide by Slewacide, was bred by WinStar Farm and foaled at Joe and Anne McMahon’s Thoroughbred farm just outside Saratoga Springs. He was originally purchased for $22,000 before Tagg bought him for $75,000 for Sackatoga Stable, an entity formed when several old friends got together for a Memorial Day barbecue in their home town of Sackets Harbor.

LThe same words today could describe octogenarian Ron McAnally, John Henry’s Hall of Fame trainer and poster boy for the geriatric set. McAnally, who celebrated his 82nd birthday on July 11, ages gracefully while continuing to pump out Grade 1 stakes winners. Seated at a Clocker’s Corner table one morning in June near the end of the extended Santa Anita Park meet and looking forward to Del Mar, McAnally made only a few minor concessions to Father Time while continuing his lifelong love affair with his job. “As long as I’m alive, that’s all I know how to do,” said the soft-spoken trainer of the regimen that keeps him young: showing up at the track early every morning seven days a week. “I don’t play golf, tennis, or cards.” McAnally admitted that he does not move as smoothly as he did when he was 41, largely the John Henry’s trainer and Hall of Famer Ron McAnally has just turned 82 years old result of partial knee replacement surgery in 2012, but the anticipation of his next stakes win keeps a bounce in his step and a glint in his eye. “Dan Landers, my assistant since 1995, has Ron McAnally: been my right arm, especially since the knee surgery,” said McAnally, who conditions 15 horses at Santa Anita and another four at Pomona with Jose Miranda, an employee for 42 years.
