Drosselmeyer First in Classic No One Saw This Coming SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2011 732-747-8060 $ TDN Home Page Click Here OH MY! DROSSELMEYER FIRST IN CLASSIC STARS GATHER AT FASIG-TIPTON Twelve months ago, there were tears in Mike Smith=s With the racing world still fired up over a fantastic two eyes after his desperate charge days of the Breeders= Cup World Championships, Fasig- aboard Zenyatta (Ire) (Street Cry Tipton aims to continue the momentum with its {Ire}) fell short in the GI Breeders= November Sale beginning this afternoon at 4 p.m. As Cup Classic. The Hall of Fame usual, the event can claim perhaps the world=s highest reinsman was breathless last night concentration of top-quality horseflesh over the span of just three or four hours. No fewer than 23 individual lots after his relentless ride got at the sale either produced a 2011 Breeders= Cup starter, Drosselmeyer (Distorted Humor) up were siblings of, or raced under the Twin Spires on Friday in time to deny the valiant Game On or Saturday themselves. "I'm fired up--I'm very excited,@ Dude (Awesome Again) in the Horsephotos Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning Jr. said when $5-million finale. AThe key to this asked about the 2011 book. AA consignor and I were horse is to keep him moving,@ said talking the other day, and they talked about how busy it Smith, who hadn=t been in Drosselmeyer=s irons since [has] been over the last 10 days. And I said, 'Hey, if you the pair won the 2010 GI Belmont S. AIf you put on the and are aren't fired up over [that], we need to go find brakes, it messes him up. I knew I was going to wheel something different to do.=@ Cont. p26 out, so I just kept him going. And I was able to save ground on both turns.@ Cont. p2-4 NO ONE SAW THIS COMING All eyes were on Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) in her bid GI BC Classic Drosselmeyer (Distorted Humor) for an unprecedented fourth victory in the GI TVG GI BC Mile Court Vision (Gulch) Breeders= Cup Mile, but Court GI BC Juvenile Hansen (Tapit) Vision (Gulch) had other ideas. GI BC Turf St Nicholas Abbey (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) Dismissed at 64-1, the 2010 GI BC Sprint Amazombie (Northern Afleet) GI Woodbine Mile hero dashed GI BC Dirt Mile Caleb’s Posse (Posse) past the popular bay mare, GI BC Juvenile Turf Wrote (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) then held off a strong surge GII BC Turf Sprint Regally Ready (More Than Ready) from Turallure (Wando) to win GII BC Marathon Afleet Again (Afleet Alex) Reed Palmer photo by a whisker. "I was far back early, but I knew they were going quick, and I figured that gave me a chance,@ said winning rider Robby Albarado. A[Trainer] Dale [Romans] told me to be sure to keep him running at the end.@ Cont. p7-8 HANSEN HOLDS OFF UNION RAGS When they turned for home in the GI Grey Goose Breeders= Cup Juvenile, even-money Union Rags (Dixie Union) ranged up on the outside and looked to have pacesetter Hansen (Tapit) at his mercy. But the free-running grey had other ideas. He dug in gamely down the stretch and defied announcer Trevor Denman=s conviction in Union Horsephotos Rags, flashing home a determined head in front. AWe pointed to the Breeders' Cup before he ever ran,@ said winning trainer Mike Maker. AI only told that to the owners, and they're as crazy as I am.@ Cont. p5-6 P TDN HEADLINE NEWS • 11/6/11 • PAGE 2 of 30 • thoroughbreddailynews.com Lisa Troutt, wife of WinStar owner Kenny Troutt, FEATURE PRESENTATION • GI BREEDERS’ CUP CLASSIC was on hand to accept the Classic trophy. AKenny has so believed in this horse the whole way through,@ she said. AWhen we went to the Belmont, and he couldn't make it there either. He was with our boys at a basketball tournament. He knew that morning. He said, >This horse has a great chance,= and he pulled it off... But he has so believed in this horse, and he just has a way of pulling it out. So we are very thankful, but very sad that Kenny is not here for this one.@ Keep ‘Em Coming... When the gates opened, leading Californian Game On Dude (Awesome Again) assumed his usual spot on the front end, with Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) shadowing him through splits of :47.84 and 1:12.82. Overseas raider So You Think (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) was surprisingly close in the early stages, while Drosselmeyer was well behind. Uncle Mo never seemed to be traveling all that well, and Game on Dude was swamped with challengers as they entered the stretch. To Honor and Serve (Bernardini) loomed boldly for a few strides, but packed it in, and it was left to his less- fancied stablemate to deliver the best and final salvo. Drosselmeyer, who had been the subject of rave morning reviews, kept on coming and would not be denied by the ultra-game ADude.@ P TDN HEADLINE NEWS • 11/6/11 • PAGE 3 of 30 • thoroughbreddailynews.com Saturday, Churchill Downs BREEDERS' CUP CLASSIC-GI, $4,545,000, CDX, 11-5, 3yo/up, 1 1/4m, 2:04 1/5, ft. 1--DROSSELMEYER, 126, c, 4, by Distorted Humor 1st Dam: Golden Ballet (MGISW, $732,145), by Moscow Ballet 2nd Dam: Golden Jewel Box, by Slew o' Gold 3rd Dam: Miss Storm Bird, by Storm Bird ($600,000 yrl '08 KEESEP). • Funny Cide's Epic Kentucky Derby Victory Is Ten Years
Funny Cide’s Epic Kentucky Derby Victory is Ten Years Old By Bill Heller Can it be ten years since a three-year-old gelding named Funny Cide, and a yellow school bus carrying a group of high school friends who owned him, rearranged the racing industry’s position on New York- breds? “I don’t believe it,” his retired Hall of Fame jockey Jose Santos said Tuesday. “It went by too fast.” Funny Cide’s trainer, Barclay Tagg, agreed: “I do have trouble believing that.” Asked what’s the first thing that comes to his mind when someone asks him about Funny Cide, Jose said, “That he was the best three-year-old in my racing career.” These days, Jose has a new career running a feed company, Instride International, which began operating in 2012 and now serves three Florida tracks: Calder, Gulfstream Park and Palm Meadows. “Basically, I’m running the whole thing,” Jose said. “I’ve been selling to the trainers. They are friends of mine.” His client list includes a bunch of New York trainers who winter in Florida, including Todd Pletcher, John Kimmel, Linda Rice, Rick Violette and John Terranova. Funny Cide, a son of Distorted Humor out of Belle’s Good Cide by Slewacide, was bred by WinStar Farm and foaled at Joe and Anne McMahon’s Thoroughbred farm just outside Saratoga Springs. He was originally purchased for $22,000 before Tagg bought him for $75,000 for Sackatoga Stable, an entity formed when several old friends got together for a Memorial Day barbecue in their home town of Sackets Harbor.
