Observations on some species of Hygrocybe subgenus Cuphophyllus Eef Arnolds Biological Station, Wijster (Drente), Netherlands* The nomenclature of the violaceous of grey species Hygrocybe subgenus Cuphophyllus and the taxonomic position of H. subradiata are discussed. One new species is described and onenew combination is made, viz. Hygrocybe radiata and H. flavipes. In Europe usually two species with a grey violaceous to lilac pileus are distinguished within Hygrocybe subgenus Cuphophyllus Donk (= Camarophyllus sensu auct.), named H. subvio- lacea (Peck) Orton & Watl. and H. lacmus (Schum.) Orton & Watl. The former species is characterized by an entirely white stipe and aromatic smell, whereas the latter species has a yellow base of stipe and no characteristic smell. Recently, Raid& Boertmann (1988) demonstrated that the name Agaricus lacmus Schum. has been since Schumacher did mention (1803: 333) currently misinterpreted not a yellow base of stipe in the original description and an unpublished, authentic plate by that author shows white lacmus Schum. is an entirely stipe. Consequently, Agaricus an earlier synonym ofHygrophorus subviolaceus Peck (1900: 82) and H. lacmus sensu auct. (with a yellow stipe base) should have a new name. According to Raid & Boertmann (1988) the oldest available name is Hygrophorus flavipes Britz. This epithet was not yet combinedin Hygrocybe and thereforethe following combina- tion is proposed: Hygrocybe flavipes (Britz.) Arnolds, comb. nov. — Basionym: Hygrophorus flavipes Britz., Hymenomyc. Stidbayern 8: 10, fig. 69. 1891. Some authors (Clemengon, 1982; Bon, 1984) distinguished two species with a yellow base of stipe, differing in spore size only: Camarophyllus lacmus sensu C16mengon with ellip- soid to lacrimiform of 6.5-8 x 4.5-6 and C.

Molecular data supporting all examined collections as V. dunensis expand its known geographic distribution. A revised morphological characterization and a phylogenetic analysis of all Volvariella species sequenced to date are provided. Key words — Agaricomycetes, ITS, phylogeny, Volvariella volvacea Introduction The genus Volvariella Speg., which is composed of saprotrophic or mycotrophic agarics, has been historically considered a member of the family Pluteaceae Kotl. & Pouzar (Singer 1986). The genus is characterized macroscopically by a pink spore-print, free lamellae, and a universal veil that forms a saccate volva at the base of the stipe and microscopically by the inverse hymenophoral trama (Singer 1986). Results from earlier molecular studies (Moncalvo et al. 2002, Matheny et al. 2006) led to questions about its monophyly and phylogenetic position in the Pluteaceae. More recent research focused on the Pluteaceae (Justo et al. 2011) showed that Volvariella is polyphyletic with two major clades. The large-spored, viscid species belonging to the V.

The hillside wetland at Vega Reservoir is larger, but lacks the diversity of wetland types found at Unaweep Seep. No other wetland observed during this survey matches the diversity of species and wetland habitat at Unaweep Seep. A 1983-84 study of the Bureau of Land Management Grand Junction Resource Area found that Unaweep Seep had the richest plant, bird, and small mammal life in the Resource Area (BLM 1999). The Audubon Society has declared this area an Important Bird Area in Colorado (National Audubon Society 2000). The site includes the Unaweep Seep state designated Natural Area an unusual hillside wetland ecosystem of marshes, wet meadows, and seeps. Dense stands of coyote willow (Salix exigua) occupy the seep's uppermost source area. Most of the seep is dominated by beaked spikerush (Eleocharis rostellata) with sporadic stands of river birch (Betula occidentalis) occurring on the lateral fringe of the seep. A large population of the giant helleborine orchid ( Epipactis gigantea) occurs on the lower part of the slope amid spikerushes and underneath the canopy of the river birches.     SOMANEWS From the Sonoma County Mycological Association VOLUME 28: 7 MARCH 2016 SOMA Speaker: Catharine Adams March 17 At the Sonoma County Farm Bureau “How the Death Cap Mushroom Conquered the World” Cat Adams is interested in how chemical ecology in- fluences interactions between plants and fungi. For her PhD in Tom Bruns’ lab, Cat is studying the inva- sive ectomycorrhizal fungus, Amanita phalloides. The death cap mushroom kills more people than any oth- er mushroom, but how the deadly amatoxins influ- ence its invasion remains unexplored. Previously, Cat earned her M.A. with Anne Pringle at Harvard University. Her thesis examined fungal pathogens of the wild Bolivian chili pepper, Capsi- cum chacoense, and how the fungi evolved tolerance to spice. With the Joint Genome Institute, she is now sequencing the genome of one fungal isolate, a Pho- mopsis species, to better understand the novel en- zymes these fungi wield to outwit their plant host.     by Michael Hopping IMPATIENCE IS INHERENT TO THE HUMAN CONDITION. Who doesn’t want to skip over the blah, blah, blah and get on with things? Okay, let’s do that. If you’re new to mushrooming be advised that this is a pastime where impatience is not your friend. And now, back to our regular programming. Imagine a nature scene. Is it dominated by plants and animals? Ordinarily, they are the most obvious creatures around. The fungi that also surround us tend to be invisible. Exceptions include the reproductive acts we call mushrooms. Those are staged by thready fungal networks, mycelia, living underground, in wood or on decaying matter. The “roots” sometimes seen at the base of mushrooms are links between the fruiting body and parent mycelium. Think of mushrooms as apples and the attached threads as multiple stems. Mushrooms can be picked, if done responsibly, without endangering the creatures that produce them. But fungi aren’t plants. A mycelium, like an animal, must obtain the sugar needed to power its cellular engines from outside sources. Some species partner with plants—the payoff for the plant being water and minerals courtesy of fungal extensions on its root system. Others fungi are parasites. Still others recycle dead material. The largest single organism on Earth may be a mycelium of Armillaria solidipes, a parasitic type of honey mushroom. This wispy monster occupies 3.4 square miles in the Blue Mountains of Oregon; its age is estimated at 2400 years. Mushroom cultivators are attuned to the health and behavior of the mycelia they farm.
