Introduction to Portraiture Through the Centuries
• The aim of the course is look at nineteenth-century British art in new ways and so to dispel the myths. One of these myths is that France was the only country in the nineteenth century where artists innovated and another is that British art was wholly derivative from French art. These myths first arose in the early twentieth century because of the rapid changes that took place in Britain at the end of the Victorian period. The anti-Victorian rhetoric was fuelled by a small number of British commentators and art historians who valorised French art and criticized British art. I will show that Victorian art was lively, innovative and exciting and reflected the history and culture of the period. • Art reflects the social conventions and expectations of the period and in Britain’s rapidly changing industrial society there were many controversial innovations and styles. We shall see how Britain's lead in the industrial revolution and its growing population and wealth led to new markets for art. It also led both to a new confidence offset by a respect for the classical period and a nostalgia for an imagined romantic medieval period. The gradual emancipation of the poor, workers and woman was reflected in a number of art works of the period. • My background: a degree in art and architecture from Birkbeck College, followed by an MA from the Courtauld Institute where I specialised in nineteenth century art and a PhD from the University of Bristol. I have published various papers including parts of two books and I have spoken at conferences here and in the USA. -

CRAYTON Page | 1 One of the earliest controversies involving the now historic presidential campaign of Barack Obama was largely an unavoidable one. The issue beyond his control, to paraphrase his later comment on the subject, was largely woven into his DNA.2 Amidst the excitement about electing an African-American candidate to the presidency, columnist Debra Dickerson argued that this fervor might be somewhat misplaced. Despite his many appealing qualities, Dickerson asserted, Obama was not “black” in the conventional sense that many of his supporters understood him to be. While Obama frequently “invokes slavery and Jim Crow, he does so as one who stands outside, one who emotes but still merely informs.”3 Controversial as it was, Dickerson’s observation was not without at least some factual basis. Biologically speaking, for example, Obama was not part of an African- American family – at least in the traditional sense. The central theme of his speech at the 2004 Democratic convention was that only a place like America would have allowed his Kenyan father to meet and marry his white American mother during the 1960s.4 While 1 Special thanks to Vincent Brown, who very aptly suggested the title for this article in the midst of a discussion about the role of race and politics in this election. Private collection -15- ALTHOUGH AMERICANS' REGARD FOR 19TH CENTURY European art has never been higher, we remain relatively unfamiliar with the artworks produced for the academies that once dominated the scene. This is due partly to the 20th century ascent of modernist artists, who naturally dis couraged study of the academic system they had rejected, and partly to American museums deciding to warehouse and sell off their academic holdings after 1930. In these more even-handed times, when seemingly everything is collectible, our understanding of the 19th century art world will never be complete if we do not look carefully at the academic works prized most highly by it. Our collective awareness is growing slowly, primarily through closer study of Paris, which, as capital of the late 19th century art world, was ruled not by Manet or Monet, but by J.-L. Gerome and A.-W. Classic Poetry Series Dante Gabriel Rossetti - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Dante Gabriel Rossetti(12 May 1828 – 9 April 1882) Rossetti was born, the son of an Italian patriot and political refugee and an English mother, in England. He was raised in an environment of cultural and political activity that, it has been suggested, was of more import to his learning than his formal education. This latter was constituted by a general education at King's College from 1836 to 1841 and, following drawing lessons at a school in central London at the age of fourteen, some time as a student at the Royal Academy from 1845 onwards. Here he studied painting with William Hollman Hunt and John Everett Millais who, in 1848, would set up the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with Rossetti, Rossetti's younger brother and three other students. The school's aspirations, in this its first incarnation, was to paint true to nature: a task pursued by way of minute attention to detail and the practice of painting out of doors. Rossetti's principal contribution to the Brotherhood was his insistence on linking poetry and painting, no doubt inspired in part by his earlier and avaricious readings of Keats, Shakespeare, Goethe, Sir Walter Scott, Byron, Edgar Allan Poe and, from 1847 onwards, the works of William Blake. 'The Germ' lasted however for only four issues, all published in 1850. In 1854 Rossetti met and gained an ally in the art critic John Ruskin and, two years later, meetings with Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris set a second phase of the Brotherhood into movement. -

Pre-Raphaelites and the Book February 17 – August 4, 2013 National Gallery of Art Pre-Raphaelites and the Book Many artists of the Pre-Raphaelite circle were deeply engaged with integrating word and image throughout their lives. John Everett Millais and Edward Burne-Jones were sought-after illustrators, while Dante Gabriel Rossetti devoted himself to poetry and the visual arts in equal measure. Intensely attuned to the visual and the liter- ary, William Morris became a highly regarded poet and, in the last decade of his life, founded the Kelmscott Press to print books “with the hope of producing some which would have a definite claim to beauty.” He designed all aspects of the books — from typefaces and ornamental elements to layouts, where he often incorporated wood- engraved illustrations contributed by Burne-Jones.
