The Pulford Dinner at Garbet Hotel, Kinlochbervie, November 1951 (recently discovered by A & J Mackay, Scouriemore)

Have you heard of Pulford’s planters We were quite a tidy crew Coming daily out of Stoer? Boys from Scourie, Tarbet, Badcall Planting trees and cutting ditches and too In the bogs of Duartmore On our way to Kinlochbervie How they were so kindly bidden We kept adding to the score- By the Duke they served so well From Achrisgill and Rhivichie To a dinner at the Garbet – Badcall – Inchard and Ardmore Kinlochbervie’s posh hotel When at last we reached the Garbet Came the long awaited morning There as many more we found And the day’s work soon went o’er Men from Durness and from Shegra And they joined the bus for Scourie Oldshoremore and all around While their friends returned to Stoer Silently we took our place On their journey in the wagon At the festive table there How they chattered in their glee And we heard a speech of welcome Such a spread and lots of liquor From the Colonel in the chair Fags and transport were all free ‘Twas a dinner to remember – Neil was sure there would be dancing Food there was of every sort When the feasting should be done But the droothy ones among them All the dames of Kinlochbervie Thought the drinks were rather short Would be there to join the fun Looking at the sea of faces Donald, who was more modest Neil was looking rather hurt Thought the Duke would run them home For alas! For his ambitions (As they were but few in number) There was not a single skirt With the Wolseley from Kylestrome There were speeches rather lengthy At the Scourie pub we left them Now and then they had a song Where they had engaged a room But the going – it was heavy – To get ready for the evening And the hours seemed all too long While we did the same at home Was it the lack of drink or women- From the cases that they carried You can have your choice of that Came a gaily coloured stream – But the music lost its meaning Socks and ties and shirts and collars And the “do” was going flat Talcum powder and Brylecream But the hour was getting latish When we called to collect them And the boys were getting dry My, the boys were looking gay And they were not really sorry They had all put on their war-paint When ‘twas time to say goodbye And were ready for the fray Donald’s face as they were leaving Donald’s toilet was the winner Wore a disappointed look – With his freshly shaven face Pulford’s wagon was the “Wolseley” Though his “thatch” was getting thinner And John Angus was the duke Every hair was in its place When we mustered for the journey Please complete order form and return with correct fee in an envelope to the box in the shop by the end of November.
