RUN THEME; ‘ IT NEVER RAINS IN WOODSIDE.’

The day dawned bleak and overcast, and as we made our way to the clubrooms, light rain began to fall. We were pleased we decided to take our “modern” instead of the MGB. Our dog was also pleased, as it meant that she could join us for a day out. A total of 17 vehicles set out, with a run along South Road, under the Gallipoli Underpass and the new elevated tram- stop. We turned right into James Condong Drive, then headed east along North Terrace and into the city. This showed us Woodside, June 2010 how far advanced the stage 2 tramline extension is. We then travelled east along Magill Road, and after a few turns, we arrived at our morning tea stop at Hazeiwood Park, Bumside. Quite a lot of interest was shown in Jenny and John Badcock’s newly aquired International 4WD truck. It certainly appears to have the ability to take any heavy work required. As we left the park, it was good to see 3 Toyota Coronas and 3 Zephyrs on the run. The trip up Greenhill Road to Balhamiah was enjoyable, and probably due to the weather, there wasn’t too much traffic, so our older vehicles didn’t have to contend with any “tailgat- ing”, which is often a problem on that road. After travelling through the towns of Summertown, Uraidla, Carey Gully and Oakbank, we arrived at the Woodside Oval, Woodside, June 2010 which was to be our lunch venue. As the rain came down in- termittently, we set up our chairs in the shed adjacent to the Skate Park. As none of us thought to bring our skate boards, we just enjoyed our lunch and caught up on the latest news. I believe some of the ladies had a sing-along to the tune of “Twinide Twinkle Little Star!!! After lunch, some of the members headed off to the nearby Chocolate Factory, while we left to visit Robyn’s sister Mar- lene Wigzell, a past member, in Bridgewater. It was an enjoyable run, and we are sure our Club Captain Edd Gray was having a good laugh around a swimming pool in Cairns, at the thought of snding 30 of his “FRIENDS’ on a run to the Hills, in the rain, in June! Seriously, thanks for an enjoyable run Edd. Woodside, June 2010, and a red Zephyr Robyn, John & Beau Sommers.

Last year saw our 25th Anniversary year celebrated with a Dinner at Urrumbira. That made me think of the many people that it takes to run our Club. Yes, we have elected officers and a very cohesive Com- mittee, but there are many people who contribute during the year who are not elected. If you refer to the list of officers in the magazine, the appointed officers are listed. But wait, - there’s more, there are the extra contributors who look after Ladies Day activities, members who knit, assemble, make quilts, supply wool, stuffing and collect and distribute the ‘Trauma Bears’ for the Emergency Services. I don’t know how many this Club has made over the years, but it must be approaching the 10,000 mark. We had dedicated members in the past, who looked after the grounds of the Complex by mowing lawns etc, but thankfully this is now done by the Marion Council. There are people who assemble the magazine and deliver it to the Post Office, external Auditors, representative members who attend various meetings such as the Federation, CCC, Glandore complex and Council meetings, Motorfest and many more. It would not be an exaggeration to say it takes over 30 members to run this Club. Thank you. This year the Camp-Out week was to the Riverland. A real highlight with a week of great activities. The number of members attending the monthly Club Runs has been very consistent during the past year and is gratifying to the organisers. Looking to the future, I see this Cub continuing to improve, it is financially sound and with the proposed improvements by the Council in the near future, the ‘home’ is going to be even better. Please consider the future of the Club and contribute by nominating at the Annual General Meeting next month to have your input on the future direction of this Club. THE MAN WHO MADE MG Cecil Kimber was born on the 12th April 1888 at Dul- wich a London suburb. At the age of eight his family moved to Manchester where his father opened a branch of the family print- ing business. The Kimbers had money but trade declined, and there was no talk of university for young Kimber when he left the Stockport Grammar School. lnstead~ he trained as a sales- man in the business and devoted his spare time to dashing about on second hand motorcycles, as I am sure many here tonight did, I know I did. Still in his early twenties, he was run into by a car at a Cheshire crossroads; one knee and hip were so badly smashed that he narrowly escaped losing his right leg and limped for the rest of his life. Quite substantial damages were awarded to Cecil, who celebrated by buying a brand-new Singer 10 in 1913. Somehow he wangled for it an Irish registration, NI 191, knowing the lo- There is some debate over when MG started. Others dispute this and believe that MG only properly began trading in 1925. The first cars which were rebodied Morris models used coach- work from Carbodies of Coventry and were built in premises in Alfred Lane, Oxford. Demand soon caused a move to larger premises in Bainton Road in September 1925, sharing space with the Morris radiator works. Continuing expansion meant another move in 1927 to a separate factory in Edmund Road, Cowley, Oxford, near the main Morris factory and for the first time it was possible to include a production line.

In 1928 the company had become large enough to war- rant an identity separate from the original Morris Garages and the M.G. During this time at AC he was working as the chief buyer with Rene as his secretary. In 1918 he moved again to E G Wrig- ley Ltd of Birmingham, the well known suppliers of steering gears and transmissions. During his time there, Wrigleys became involved with the Sanderson project, and the enthusiastic Kimber invested his own little nest egg too. He lost the lot, and was virtually pen- niless when on 1921 William Morris, the future Lord Nuffield appointed him sales manager of the Morris Garages in Oxford. 1939 TB Midget July 2010 Page 12 The MG Story

This is a famous car to all MG entuisiasts. Old Speckled Hen took its unusual name from an MG car which was used as a runaround for workers in the MG factory. Over years of service, the car became covered in flecks of paint, gain- ing it acclaim in the town and earned it the nickname “Owid Speckled ‘Un”, translated into Old Speckled Hen for the brown ale first brewed by Morland in 1979 when the brewery was asked by MG to create a commemorative beer for the factory’s 50th anniversary~-~. Ian Williams was a personnel officer at the MG factory in Abingdon in 1979 and it was he who thought of using the name for the new ale.
