La Palma Car Show/& Pacific Southwest Zone Meet.

As you know we need raffle items for the event. With the added people from the Arizonian Pacific Zone Meet there is a need to have as many items for the raffle tables as possible. Of course, there will be the food table with all of the familiar items.

Take a check at all of the items you have saved for a white elephant gift to see what you can donate for the raffle table. I am believing there a need for as many raffle items as we can locate with the combination of the La Palma Car Show & Southwest Pacific Zone Meet.

The Child and his mother: A curios child asked his mother: “Mommy, why ae some of your hairs turning grey? The mother tried to use this occasion to teach her child: “It is because of you, dear. Every bad action of yours will turn one of my hairs grey!” The child replied innocently: “now I know why grandmother has only grey hairs on her heard.:

Clever Kids: A police officer found a perfect hiding place for watching for speeding motorists. One day, the officer was amazed when everyone was under the speed limit, so he investigated and found the problem. A 10 year old boy was standing on the side of the road with a huge hand panted sign which said “Radar Trap Ahead,” A little more investigative work led the officer to the boy’s accomplice: another boy about 100 yards beyond the radar trap with a sign reading “Tips” and a bucket at his feet full of change.

HEMMINGS FEATURE Captains of Cool - Studebaker Why outwardly stable people just go crazy over By Jim Donnelly from November 2013 issue of Hemmings Classic Car https://www.hemmings.com/stories/article/captains-of-cool-studebaker

In This Article It's a wild thing to watch, really. You figure that South Bend, Indiana, is a personification of middle-American stability and conservatism. The cars that were produced there, by a company whose roots were in hewing wagons for the pioneers, reflect those values. Dignified, reliable, elegant, but never out of line or improper. And yet, hundreds upon hundreds of Studebaker fanatics are flatly in love with them.

1937 This is what you take away from any gathering of Studebaker owners, even if they're just sitting around somebody's living room or deck: unforced, innocent affection, the kind of emotional purity that welds a lifelong bond among people who love the products of this proud, fallen independent. Stude' owners not only love their cars, they love each other. It's a good feeling that swells exponentially when the Studebaker Drivers Club holds its homecoming every five years in South Bend. Presented in conjunction with the Owners.

Volume 20 March 2021 P. 10

Association International and the Antique Studebaker Club, this is a very big deal, attracting close to 600 show cars to be judged, and attendees from as far as .

Not to complain, but last year's event was difficult from a coverage standpoint, which is mainly a reference to the heat--relentlessly in the upper 90s with sodden humidity. The attendees didn't seem to mind, though. They strolled happily, made new friends and proudly showed cars that were beautifully restored, all-original or, sometimes, not even complete. A Studebaker meet is devoid of one-upsmanship, ego and put-on enthusiasm. You'd love going to one. Now let's have some owners tell you themselves why they do what they do. 1937 Studebaker Dictator Jim and Shellie Neiburger Stillwell, Kansas

"Up until the year 1937, "dictator" was still a relatively benign word, and Studebaker used it as the name of this model line, but due to the coming of World War II, they changed the model name the following year to "Commander." The car is terrific, just wonderful. This is its first time out for showing. We only finished it in the last two weeks, after having been working on it for more than 1937 Studebaker State President four years."

"This is a Canadian Sports , made in Hamilton, Ontario. Studebaker used GM engines such as this 283 cu in V-8 for the last year of Canadian production. Studebaker said it was made by McKinnon Industries, but it's basically a Chevy engine. Nothing wrong with that, though, the 283's a great engine. It features vinyl bucket seats, and the vinyl top was standard on the last Daytona models. I like Studebakers mainly because they're different. I'm from a 1940 1966 Studebaker Daytona Bill Pressler small town in Pennsylvania--Greenville--that originally had Kent, Ohio a pretty strong Studebaker dealer. I used to see Larks all over town, and I always thought they were just different."

Volume 20 March 2021 P.11

"When we first got this car, you literally had to lift the doors up to try to swing them closed. My wife, Joanne, and I restored virtually this entire car all by ourselves. She sewed the interior, while I picked the material for the patterns. We did all the fitting, including the dash, which is the most challenging part. She also gets credit for the color choices, since she's a lot more color conscious than I am. My first Studebaker was a 1964, and I fell in love with them, and with the driver’s club. I decided to do a 1963 Studebaker before we're all done cruising, and it had to be a Studebaker. We drove it Avanti R2 here from Ontario."

1960 VIII Bob Easton Welland, Ontario, Canada

1913 Studebaker Steve Hallien Fort Wayne, Indiana "I like Studebakers because they're sturdy cars. Studebaker, any Studebaker, would always give you more than what you expected. This AA35 Touring car is fun to drive. It has a three-speed transmission, a transaxle at the back, four cylinders, 35 horsepower, and it still runs really well. I restored the car myself, with some help." 1959 Ed Davies Akron, Ohio "This model 8E7 pickup is a half-ton truck with the long bed. It has a 259-cu in V-8 with a two- barrel carburetor, plus electrically operated overdrive on the three-speed manual transmission. I don't have any idea how many of these trucks are still around, but there are quite a few that were saved. I love the Studebaker meet. I come to it all the time, plus I come out every May when the Studebaker Drivers Club has its big swap meet here in South Bend." 1955 Regal Larry Mitchell Granger, Indiana "Because I live right next to South Bend, ever since I was a kid, I've always liked Studebakers. I've probably owned 15 to 20 different Studebakers over the years. This one has the 259-cu.in. V-8 engine with an automatic transmission. I don't know what it is about these cars, there's just something about them. I belong to the Chevrolet club, too, but Studebaker guys just really stick together: They help each other out, get parts for each other, do all kinds of stuff together, like this." 1937 Studebaker State President Jerry Kurtz York, Pennsylvania "The engine is a 250-cu in straight flathead eight. The body style is considered a three-passenger , and it has dual side mounts. I'm still in the process of restoring it. It's not quite finished. only drove it for the first time two weeks ago. I also own a 1939 K15M Studebaker soda truck that once delivered Coca-Cola in New York City. When I was 17 years old, I wanted a car with running boards--why, I have no idea. But I went to the junkyard, and the only car there that I could afford that had running boards was a 1937 Studebaker. So, I bought it when I was 17, my first car. And I

Volume 20 March 2021 P. 12 soon found out that with this group, it's all about the people, not about the cars. They're great people, and that's why I work with Studebakers." 1940 Studebaker Champion Tom York Port Charlotte, Florida "This is a business coupe, with the basic flathead straight-six and a three-speed manual transmission without overdrive. It also has opera seats, one down and one up. When they're both flipped down, they face each other. It's a rare item." 1963 R2 Bill Patterson Kingston, Ontario, Canada "This is the R2, which means the supercharged 289-cu in V-8. It's been converted to a five-speed, as opposed to the four-speed, so that's not stock--it's a Ford Motorsport T-5. The car was originally an automatic, and I thought it would be fun to have a car that's fun to play with, shift-wise. Unfortunately, age has taken over, and I now get leg cramps, and as a consequence, the manual shift can be a little bit of a problem occasionally. Back in 1963, I bought a Studebaker Hawk new in Canada, and drove it for many years. In fact, I just sold it in 2004, still all-original. So I've been with Studebaker for many years. Early on, I learned the collector value of these cars, and I always yearned for an Avanti, but the new retail price for one was 7,500 Canadian dollars, which was way out of my league in those days. It wasn't until the late Seventies that I was able to buy and restore my first Avanti." 1950 Studebaker Champion Al Kirsits South Bend, Indiana "My best friend, in Houston, Texas, built this for me according to my design. I saw some old archival films from the Fifties of the South Bend Fire Department and saw that we'd had some bullet nose chief's cars. So I wanted to do a period reproduction of one. There are a few things here that are different from the prototype, although it's faithful in terms of the revolving lamp on the top, which they called the aircraft beacon. The engine is the original flathead straight-six, bored .040 over. We added air conditioning and switched the car over to 12 volts." 1937 Studebaker Coupe Express Tom and Brenda Lewis Princeton, Louisiana "This is one of about 3,500 Coupe Express models manufactured that year, the first factory pickups for Studebaker. We're still in the process of putting it completely together. Basically, all the wiring still needs to be done, the wipers need to go in, the instruments need to go in, the three fenders and the bed, and hopefully we'll be ready for the Studebaker International Meet next year. One time, I brought a project pickup like this, a Hudson pickup, to a Hudson meet, and there were more people around that incomplete pickup than there were around the restored cars parked right next to it all day long." 1964 Studebaker Daytona Al Henry Mishawaka, Indiana "I like Studebakers, well, because I grew up with Studebakers. My father worked for Studebaker, my uncles worked for Studebaker, and it seems like that was all we ever had: Not just in our family, but all our neighbors also had Studebakers. Plus, I've always had good luck with them. They look right, they drive well, so I keep right on driving them. I bought this Daytona convertible the way it is, from a friend who had it for seven years and didn't use it much, so I made him an offer and got the car. It's powered by a 289-cu.in. V-8, has power steering, front power disc brakes, and an automatic transmission." 1961 Studebaker Lark VIII Regal Ted Hurd Streetsboro, Oh

BCOIE Highlight for the March 2021 edition - Window Roller Repair: After about 4 cycles the clips pop off? NEW!

Question:

Can anyone help with '61 hawk window rollers? The arms are ok and the studs going through the window frame seem ok. I currently have "c" clips on the outside of studs holding the window frame in place. After about 4 cycles they pop off. The factory original were gone so I don't know what I'm looking for.

Raymond Fichthorn

There is a very high-carbon washer that is supposed to be on each stud. It is a specific size, and much THINNER than a standard washer. You MUST have that size/type washer, or they will pop off.

Note: This is probably for most pre 1962 cars. Post '62 used nylon rollers.
