Prez-Sez: BY: FRANK LILLIG

I always enjoy Transportation Days at The Illinois Railway Museum in Union. Of course, there are some years I have not gotten there, but 1st Sunday in August remains a high priority. This year we had really great weather.

Avanti, Studebaker and showed up in good numbers. Many members came out for this event. See the minutes for those who attended the meeting. I know some were there but did not attend. We enjoyed seeing members of the Rock River group, some with dual membership. I enjoyed visiting with Ed and Gladys Stastny. It’s been too long since we last visited. Bill Mitchell showed up in a 1965 Wagonaire – the first time I remember seeing him driving a Studebaker. Studebaker on Facebook I first started to use Facebook a few years ago as a way to keep up with my children, their spouses and grandchildren. Since then I’ve expanded to other relatives, friends and various groups. I seldom post something directly, but I often ‘like’ or comment on something. When Paul Windish started to post some photos from his trip last month to the international meet in Dover, Studebakers and other automo- tive groups have become very frequent occurrences on my screen. There’s the Studebaker Addicts (International), the STUDEBAKER, American Automobiles…, Old Cars Weekly, Avanti Owners Association, and others. Studebakers are present in a variety of vehi- cles: pedal driven children’s autos, buses, trucks, sedans, , station wagons, military and rescue vehicles, even a motorcycle hid- den between early 50s rear fenders. A variety of material is present as well: old ads, eBay and other for sale listings, current vehicles, long stored collections rusting away, restoration or modification in process, from early 1900s electric to 2008 Avanti, showroom to race track, service bay to paint booth, questions and answers. Vehicles presented come from the world-wide Studebaker community and beyond, from Black Hawk members those from other continents, in English, etc. International Drive Your Studebaker Day, September 13, 2014 Last year I missed this event because an aunt passed away in California and I felt compelled to be there with my cousins. I hope that I’m able to participate in events this year. Brian Clauss has again arranged for us to be on the Lunch Hour news segment at WGN tele- vision on Friday, September 12. Let Brian know if you’ll be there: E-mail [email protected] On Saturday, September 13, we have options: From Jack Willis: Gordy Buetsch would like to invite the Black Hawk chapter to join the RRVCSDC to a picnic at his house, 1 PM to ? Bring lawn chairs and a dish to pass. Gordy will supply the meat, soda, silverware and plates. Bring a Studebaker if you can, brand X or whatever. (just come) He invites friends from a disbanded Hot Rod Club he used to belong to, besides our chapter, usually 50 cars and 100 people. It is always a fun and relaxing day. Best to Map-Quest it. RSVP to Jack: [email protected] Wisconsin Region has an unofficial gathering in East Troy, near the East Troy Electric Railroad. Riding the rails is optional. Check the website, http://www.easttroyrr.org/, for schedules and prices. They’ll gather in the afternoon at J Lauber’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor, 2012 Church Street. John Lauber is a WDSDC member with 4 Studebakers. Caravan down Main Street at 4:00 PM to Gus’s Drive In for the Saturday evening cruise. Fur- ther details on these events will be coming via email. For those without email, please keep in touch with officers and activity directors. Al- so, we’re open to suggestions for gathering points, possibly breakfast gatherings along the way to each event. I do enjoy being with the Black Hawk group, Frank! 4

Editalk: A Look Back At Summer BY: JIM KOENIGSMARK

As I write this column I wonder where summer went. Here we are with the September Starliner. This summer was especially busy for Alice and I. With 2 meets back to back in June, that started the summer off. Then there is all the work moving all the things we have accumulated over the years, and keeping up with the garden and fields that need mowing. At the end of July we went to Davenport, Iowa for the Bix Jazz festival. The middle of August we drove our 1977 Miller-Meteor hearse to Rochester, MN. for the Professional Car International Meet. It was nice to be riding up front instead of in the back. There were 2 Studebakers at the meet, a 1915 hearse and a 1954 Ambulet. There were also several Packard hearses. One of the tours we went on was to the Mayo Clinic. It was nice to see that as a tourist and not as a patient. Another tour was of the Hormel Museum and the research center in Austin, MN. There were samples of Spam, I had not had that in over 50 years. After eat- ing it I remembered why. It was quite a sight to see, all the am- Photo from F. He warned that the '65 was in better condition than the useful hobby for the past quarter century. '66 and that the '66 needed an engine replacement. I never the less chose the final year model, thinking I would thus always have the newest Studebaker, sort of the ultimate Studebaker. Scott, the member who had designed the Black Hawk Chap- ter logo, gave me some copies of Turning Wheels and the Star- liner. He suggested that I join both the national Studebaker Drivers Club and the local chapter, which I did. In a parking lot examination of the car by knowledgeable members after a Chapter meeting, I learned that the V-8 was a 1971 307 rather than the proper 283 and that it had 202 Cama- ro heads. This explained the car's desire to cruise at 85 mph and its poor gas mileage. Eventually the tired, leaky engine was replaced by an appropriate rebuilt 283 which was both slower and more thrifty. After other meetings I learned something of the car's history. It was sold by the Canadian factory to Lloyd Hildreth Motors of Muskogee, Oklahoma where it served as a demonstrator. When Studebaker production ended in March, 1966 it became Mrs. Hildreth's personal car for a number of years. Black Hawk member Ron Pavlak bought the car from Mrs. Hildreth and brought it to Chicago. It went through several hands here before finding a home with Scott. After I bought the car a few mechanical tweaks had it running reasonably well. It certainly was a better car than the 1963 Chevy I once owned. The more I drove it the better I liked it. I decided to restore it. It went to Tom Papirez at Ernie's Auto Body in East Chicago, Indiana and I went about finding parts. Turning Wheels showed that Newman and Altman was having a clearance sale of 1966 NOS parts at bargain prices. New fenders at $25 each, similarly inexpensive new bumpers, new chrome script and other goodies were soon on their way to East Chicago. Other advertisers provided more pieces. One of the best aspects of the show was the judging. In addition to the official judging procedure, the show in- cluded the Hagerty Youth Judging Program. Designed to bring the world of classics to a kid friendly level, seven potential AACA/BHC members were given the basics of judging and guided through the show field to pre-selected vehicles. They were given the opportunity to interact with owners and learn the history and fun facts of each vehi- cle. A simplified scorecard helped the team to choose their top two choices. All of the seven participants had close BHC ties . . . two of Al & Diane Benning’s grand- sons, Josh and Tommy Benning, the son and daughter of Don and Gisela Cuddihee, Paul and Tara, and the three oldest granddaughters of Don & Nancy Juday, Tia and Calleigh Juday and Julia Bielanski.
