03 Wood – the material that success is carved from

The uses of wood are endless. Be it furniture, houses, industrial halls, bridges or towers – wood has accompanied humankind for many thousands of years. And not without reason. Because its advantages over other materials are beyond dispute. Here are just a few examples: Foto: Griffner Haus 04 Non-ageing qualities Wood that has been protected against weathering will not age. That’s why – with correct maintenance – buildings will not lose their value. You only need to think of old half-timbered structures dating from the 13th century.

Great heat-retention capacities Its special cell structure makes wood a poor conductor. That’s why it’s especially good for heat insulation.

Better fire resistance With the proper structural measures to provide protection against fire, wood will, for instance, resist the effects of fire longer than steel beams and concrete structures are able to.

Renewable resources Wood grows back again. It is therefore an inexhaustible source and comes with an impressive ecological record to boot.

Compliant with current CO2 requirements

One cubic metre of primolam used in a building, for example, will keep one tonne of CO2 out of the atmosphere. Which is just one of the reasons why it is able to meet the CO2 requirements that currently govern the construction of public buildings in a variety of countries. And that have, for example, already passed into law in France, Slovenia and the Austrian provinces of and Carinthia.

These are a few reasons why timber is such a good material for construction. But because we’re also able to enhance its properties, there are also many more reasons. But find out for yourself! 05 Weinberger – the making-of

1854 Weinberger’s success story began with a farm in the Austrian province of Carinthia, which also included some forested property. Four generations ago, it was decided to exploit that capital through commerce. The business based in the Valley increased its ability to add value by building a small sawmill. The following decades were characterised by the expansion of the site and extensions to the sawmill. A log yard was created, for instance, and parquet production was commenced as was the construction of the machining plant for profile boards and timber for building. All investments were designed to help the company develop into a high-tech wood-processing company.

08 Bilam and trilam of the highest strength

Our manufacturing technologies enable us to produce bilam and trilam that is 10 % stronger than usual. A study by Holzforschung Austria confirmed our unique standing where the production of B11-strength bilam and trilam beams is concerned. Naturally, we manufacture B10 and B13 bilam and trilam as well, also in accordance with the Z-9.1-440 ap- proval, which became the equivalent of the general technical approval by the Deutsche Institut für Bautechnik in January 2006. This approval means that we are able to produce bilam and trilam possessing a coefficient of elasticity parallel 2 to the fibre with an E0,mean of 11,600 N/mm . This value is comparable to that of GL24-strength glued laminated timber. The major benefit: greater strength and even higher maximum loads for the most demanding of uses in a wide range of areas.

Glued log-house planks in a variety of profiles

We manufacture our log-house planks from heartwood-free Austrian wood that is dried to the moisture content that standards require for indoor use. Their outstanding feature is that from the outside only the joint’s straight line is visible along the length. This exclusive visual effect is achieved through the use of edge finger jointing. A special tool is used to create tongue-and-groove profiles to an accuracy of 1/100 mm. The great benefit: planks from different production batches may be easily joined together. Profile accuracy is one of the most important demands we make on quality. So it’s all the more important to know what that means – the explanation is simple: just imagine you’re using a knife to create a profile. The knife will become blunt after a while. So you sharpen it. But sharpening the knife alters its geometry. And will therefore affect the shape of the profile. So the only way to pre- vent that is to change the knife. And that’s exactly what we do at Weinberger. And are thus able to guarantee absolutely accurate profiles.

Glued laminated timber and duo structural timber

Our philosophy regarding quality is also based on our ability to provide one-stop shopping in specific areas to all cus- tomers. Which is also why the properties of our glued laminated timber almost equal the properties of bilam and trilam qualities. Wood of the highest quality sourced from the best of growing regions

The area around our Reichenfels location in Carinthia’s Lavant Valley, for example, is an excellent growing region. For this reason alone we have been able to establish ourselves as a top supplier of quality timbers destined for use in visible areas. We are also able to supply Scandinavian pine which possesses fine fibres and particularly attractive growth patterns. All this in conjunction with the special care that we take in addressing our customers’ individual requirements as well as production by lists and different types and combinations of wood (e.g. spruce/larch, log planks) count among our major strengths.

Bilam and trilam of the highest strength

The Z-9.1-440 general technical approval issued by the Deutsche Institut für Bautechnik has been in force since January 2006. This approval means that we are able to produce bilam and trilam possessing a coefficient of elas- 2 ticity parallel to the fibre with an 0,meanE of 11,600 N/mm . This value is comparable to that of GL24-strength glued laminated timber.

Flat and edge finger jointing

Flat finger jointing is beneficial to both visual and technical demands. But we are also able to offer our customers an additional extra in the log-house segment: our edge finger jointing. The benefit: joints only become visible as a discreet line along the length at second glance.

10 Precisely planed with special tools

It used to be customary to use standard tools, e.g. back-toothed profile planing blades. But these blades’ geometric properties would also change every time they were sharpened. That’s why the angle as well as the precision and fit of the tongue-and-groove joints used to vary. Our new generation of tools, however, is based on a revolutionary system that prevents these inaccuracies. That’s why our customers appreciate the absolutely precise fit and variety of combinations that are possible with our log-house planks – regardless of the production batch and date.

Limitless variety of finishes

We do not think of customer requests just as jobs that have to be done, we rather see them as obligations. Which is why we’re able to supply an almost unlimited variety of finishes: be it larch, thermally treated wood, be it steamed, planed, brushed or chopped. We are, for instance, able to create rustic or antique finishes by treating bilam and trilam beams in our special steaming processes. Chopping and brushing, on the other hand, are also able to create unique finishes that are particularly popular with end users in the log-house segment.

Formaldehyde-free gluing

Wood is a natural product. And it should stay that way. That’s why we only use formaldehyde-free adhesives. Which – where emissions are concerned – means that we leave wood the way nature created it. And it goes without saying that we meet all the test and certification requirements.

11 Vertical and horizontal finger jointing

The principle

Finger jointing is a special method of joining wood along its length that utilises the principle of wedging. It uses a standardised profile with many small wedges that is pressed with great force into a corresponding opposite profile. It’s already impossible to take this force-fit joint apart again by hand. It is then possible through the application of glue to create joints that may be subjected to permanent loads and whose structural properties can be calculated. The only difference between horizontal and vertical finger jointing is the cutting angle that is rotated by 90°.

Vertical finger jointing

Vertical or upright finger jointing is the conventional method used. Compared with the horizontal method, its benefit lies in its rapid production that results from the fact that the shorter board sides are machined. Which helps reduce sales prices. The profile on this economic and rational joint remains visible where the connection is made.

Horizontal or lateral finger jointing, on the other hand, is a special method of production by which the longer section of the board is machined. Weinberger enhances this profile with an edge finger jointing that has no effect on plank strength. The result: a straight joint in the shape of a discreet line that only becomes noticeable on closer scrutiny. This is another reason why Weinberger is an appreciated partner in modern and demanding log-house construction.

Weinberger commenced its wood-pro- cessing operations in 1929 when it opened up a small sawmill in Reichen- fels in Carinthia’s Lavant Valley. These small beginnings developed into to- day’s extraordinarily modern high-tech production site. This is also where this long-established family-run company has its official headquarters.

The works in Carinthia is where motivated skilled workers manufacture bilam, trilam and log-house planks on state-of-the-art machines. The quality of the products and services provided from here has enabled Weinberger to become the market leader. This is also where the ware- houses that always contain around 1,000 m³ of finished products for lightning-fast delivery to customers at all times are located.

Great innovative power is also typical for Weinberger. And it is noticeable in many details. For instance, in glue application. The glue here is not poured but applied using high-pressure sprays (35 to 60 bars). And in finger jointing where highest precisions are achieved through individual pressing because all the separate jointing points are aligned before they are pressed together. The result? Naturally “Best of Wood à la Weinberg- er”.

14 Best of wood comes from Carinthia and Salzburg

We manufacture glued laminated tim- ber and ceiling elements in Abten- au in Salzburg. Surrounded by high mountains, we work right where the high-quality alpine spruces that we use grow. This timber constitutes the foun- dation for our products, which convince with, among other things, high levels of form stability, dimensional accuracy and resilience.

It goes without saying that you must fulfil all the necessary prerequisites if you promise glued laminated timber of the highest of qualities. That’s why our production hall in Abtenau is home to all the modern equip- ment that our experienced workers need to manufacture high-quality end products. But perfect engineering by itself is, of course, not enough for best-of-wood quality.

The timber itself must also pass the strict scrutiny of our quali- ty inspectors even after it has been successfully scanned with X-rays (MiCROTEC GOLDENEYE). And that’s why our skilled workers monitor the finger-jointing process with trained eyes. Just to make sure that top- class quality and a perfect appearance are actually ensured bit by bit after the exacting final inspection. And, where necessary, we will use the brilliant “shuttle method” at the retouching station to help nature along.

The past

Previously, log houses could only be built with settling compensation. This meant that large glass fronts and windows could only be realised with elaborate structural measures. The same applied to gable construction and connections to brick structures and uprights.

The vision

The time had come to eliminate these disadvantages and realise the vision of walls that didn’t settle. The particular challenge was to develop the appropriate manufacturing methods. The central approaches taken constituted the attempt, on the one hand, to utilise the very good structural properties that wood possesses along its grain and, on the other hand, to meet the demand of maintaining the typical appearance of wood.

The solution: Bilam forte – the log-house plank by Weinberger that doesn’t settle

After much development work, we became the first company to find a technical solution for commercial mass pro- duction. The solution integrates the wood and its stabilising properties along its grain into the inside of the log-house plank. This ingenious method guarantees that the structure won’t settle and preserves the desired appearance.
