34 CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2009 MUSEUMS ARE TRANSFORMATIONAL PLACES. Just ask the thousands of kids-turned-adults who have participated in Carnegie Museum of Art’s Saturday Art Classes throughout its 80-year history. Or the young adults who literally take over The Warhol for one week a year in a creative explosion appropriately called Youth Invasion (see page 12). Or the tens of thousands of families and individuals who become mem- bers of Carnegie Museums each year so they can experience true quality time, whether it be roaming with the dinosaurs in Dinosaurs in Their Time or gazing at the stars in Buhl Digital Dome.

That anyone can walk into one of our four museums and be inspired, challenged, and transformed is all the more important at times like these, when hope and inspiration aren’t exactly in great supply. Last year, a record number of people did exactly that—nearly 1.2 million, our highest annual admissions.

Throughout the pages of this special salute to donors and volunteer leaders, we feature the names and stories of the many individuals and organizations who recognize the transformational power of Carnegie Museums. They make it possible for us to do what we do, even when economic pressures challenge the very existence of institutions such as ours. We thank them and honor them.

Among those ardent supporters are Bob and Irene Bozzone, who so passionately share with Carnegie Science Center a mission to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and technologists. An engineer himself, Bob enjoyed a long career at , and he knows from first-hand experience what an early appreciation for science can mean to a child. What’s more, Bob and Irene and their 10 grandchildren are frequent visitors to Carnegie Museums, and the Science Center is a favorite place of discovery for them.

In 2007, the Bozzones donated $400,000 to fund the first planetarium show at the Buhl Digital Dome. More recently, they donated another $1 million in support of roboworld™, opening June 13 (the cover story in this issue of the magazine). We look forward to welcoming the Bozzone Family to this first-of-its-kind exhibit!

Others who have given so generously of their time and energy over the past year are the members of our 2008 Leadership Team: Chris Carson, Chair of the Annual Fund Toto Fisher, Chair of the Major Gifts Committee Snyder, Chair of the Individual Gifts Committee Hugh Van der Veer, Chair of the Corporate Committee

With the help and seemingly endless enthusiasm of these wonderful volunteer leaders and their committees, we raised $23.7 million in total contributions in 2008, including $7.1 for our Annual Fund—all despite a particularly challenging second half of the year. These gifts help strengthen an already strong foundation on which we are building our future, one that continues to be full of extraordinary opportunity.

On behalf of our staff, the board of trustees, and the many individuals who benefit from all that our four museums bring to the community, we thank the many donors, members, and volunteers who are continuing a long tradition of giving to Carnegie Museums. Your support inspires us daily!

THROUGHOUT THE EASTERN UNITED STATES, art museums, house museums, and art schools have benefited from the generosity of the Richard C. von Hess Foundation. At Carnegie Museum of Art, a recent gift is supporting the much-anticipated renovation and reinstallation of the Galleries, home to the museum’s beloved decorative arts collection.

“The Bruce Galleries project has all of the ingredients we look for: an important collection, intellectual sophistication, strong leadership, and a creative approach to interpreting art,” says Anne Genter, a trustee of the foundation.

An avid collector, artist, and historic preservationist, Richard C. von Hess was the longtime art director for Lancaster-based Armstrong Cork Company (now Armstrong World Industries). He’s perhaps best known for restoring, along with his wife Louise Tinsley Steinman, the important 18th-century Wright’s Ferry Mansion in Columbia, Pa., which is filled with some of the most extraordinary Pennsylvanian furniture made prior to 1750. Shortly before his death in 1997, von Hess established his foundation and asked Anne, his good friend, to serve as one of its trustees.

A Sewickley resident skilled in historic restoration and interior design, Anne is a longtime supporter of Carnegie Museum of Art and co-chair of its new Decorative Arts and Design Forum. In less than a year, the group has grown to more than 200 members and counting.

Anne says she feels fortunate to be part of the Bruce Galleries project. “It is a beautiful and thought-provoking installation. I think people are going to be just delighted with what they see.”
