The mission of our wine program is to offer our guests what we feel represents some of the greatest wine estates of the world. We look for the very highest level of quality and value in order to acquire spectacular bottlings. After over two decades, we have traveled as a staff to many of the birthplaces of these world class estates. We hope to present to guests at any level of wine appreciation a wonderful and diverse selection of offerings that have all been stored, aged, and finally served properly while dining here at the Barolo Grill. After careful selection and collection, we hope to have created a program with a thoughtful curation of wines.

Champagne- In Champagne, there is a distinction that separates wine production into two major categories that a wine producer may follow…
Récoltant-Manipulant Champagne Houses (Grower-Producers) - producers that make wines only from grapes that they farm exclusively from their own land. Because their sparkling wines are crafted with grapes from specific parcels of land and blended in small lots, they tend to taste very distinct, and different every year.
Négociant-Manipulant Champagne Houses (often Grande Marque Producers) - the vast majority of Champagne produced, close to 90%, fall under this category. These producers are often much larger than Grower-Producers, and are usually easily recognizable brands – they may use grapes sourced by other vineyards to make their wines, and usually focus on blending grapes from different regions and vintages to produce a consistent taste every year.

The vast majority of Champagne houses fall under this category. These producers are often much larger than Grower-Producers, and are usually easily recognizable brands. Although many do own some of the vineyards they source fruit from, Négociant-Manipulants are best known for their ability to blend Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier from a wide variety of vineyards and vintages to achieve a consistent house style. From the entry-level bottlings to the tête de cuvées, these Champagnes can be some of the most delicious and compelling wines in the world.

Italian Whites of the North (Vini Bianchi del Nord)
White Wines of Italy
Trentino-Alto Adige This quiet bilingual Alpine region of Italy’s most Northern Provinces produces outstanding and familiar varietal white wines such as Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvigon Blanc in addition to very interesting wines from Müller Thurgau, Kerner and Gewurztraminer. In Terlano, wine growing goes back to pre-Roman times. Thanks to its fine climate and location above the flood plain, the area around Settequerce, San Maurizio and Gries was ideally suited to human settlement. Archeological finds, including ladles and bronze vessels from the 5th to the 4th centuries B.C., are indicative of early wine growing activity.

Friuli-Venezia-Giulia In this northeastern region bordering Austria and Slovenia, the hilly zones of Collio and Colli Orientali are producing some Italy's finest whites. Many varietals are produced here with great success, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco, and Pinot Grigio. Equally intriguing wines are Tocai (which, beginning with the 2007 vintage, is known as Friulano) and Ribolla Gialla.

Piemonte In this northwestern region bordering France, ‘Piemonte’ literally translates to ‘the foot of the mountains’ as the Alps separate here France and Italy. The lower and more regional foothills known as the ‘Langhe’ are soils mostly reserved for red wines. However, adjacent to this area are the sandy hills of the Roero producing fragrant Arneis and Favorita. International variatels are made often by producers wanting to make an impression on the wine world with their particular styles. The Cortese grape, famous in the town of Gavi, is often fresh and fruity, and Timorasso yields rich, textural whites from Tortona.

Marche Verdicchios from the hills near the Adriatic and from the small Apennine towns of Matelica and Jesi have achieved a great level of quality, and can be found in two different styles: Light and fresh, and a perfect accompaniment to the local fish dishes, or aged to reveal depth and complexity, as is the case with Bucci and Casalfarneto.

Umbria Umbria is a region much better known for red wine, but several great whites are made. Orvieto (also the name of a popular tourist town) was traditionally produced in a slightly sweet style, but is now usually a dry wine. In addition to local varietals like Grechetto and Trebbiano, some wineries have introduced international varietals with great success.

White Wines of the Old World (Vini Bianchi del Mondo) Austria Without question some of the greatest and most interesting white wines are produced directly to the north of Italy in neghboring country of Austria. Gruner Veltliner (the ‘Green Veltliner, which some suspect named from the Italian area of Valtellina) and Riesling show incredible personality and are truly stunning when paired with food.

Many agree that Italy's most important red wine is named after the small town of Barolo in the Langhe hills. A wine of great tradition with a somewhat troubled past, it is now produced with modern methods that yield a fresher, cleaner, and more balanced wine. Five villages produce distinct styles: Barolo and La Morra are most delicate and perfumed, Monforte and Serralunga are richer and more structured, while the wines of Castiglione Falletto strike a balance between the two. Styles have emerged that can be classified as Traditionalist or Modernist, though many have settled somewhere between the two in the past few years.

Elio Altare is one of Italy’s greatest winemakers; his wines have come to define the changes that have taken place in Barolo over the last 30 years. He inspired a generation of younger producers to commit to quality in the vineyards and bottle their own estate wines. The changes Elio championed in the 70’s: green harvesting, organic farming, and shorter macerations are commonplace today and have made Barolo a more rich, diverse and higher quality wine producing region. Altare Barolo, Barolo Arborina and Barolo Brunate are among the most prized wines of the area and put the supple, fragrant qualities of the commune of La Morra on display. In 2005 Elio released his first vintage of Barolo Cerretta, from the Serralunga commune in the eastern valley, where the soils influence the wines in very different ways than La Morra. It will be great to witness his hands and philosophies at play with vineyards from another commune.

One of the most outspoken and dedicated producers in Barolo was, up until his recent devastating passing, Domenico Clerico. He was born in Monforte d’Alba, the Barolo comune that is known for producing some of the strongest and most structured wines of Barolo. The soils in the eastern valley of Barolo are less fertile and are a collection of calcareous marl, limestone and sandstone. The Nebbiolo that grows in these parts has more color, aging potential and is bolder. In addition to having a larger-than-life personality, Domenico was a farmer’s farmer. These are some of the boldest and explosive wines you will ever have. The most famous cru of the winery is Ginestra. This bowl-shaped vineyard has a steep head wall and is protected from the northern winds; it is just beautiful to see. Pajana is a little-known sub plot of Ginestra where the exposure is a touch more easterly and the resulting wine tends to be a bit more elegant. Percristina (named for his daughter who tragically passed away at a young age) comes from a plot in the cru of Mosconi, also in Monforte.

Aldo Conterno is the son of the Giacomo Conterno, and the brother of Giovanni. He worked with his father and brother for years, but decided to create a winery of his own in 1969. He purchased a farm in the Monforte zone of Barolo, and has been making wine with his sons in this area ever since. Monforte is known for the famous Bussia zone, an area of vineyards known to make structured and age-worthy Barolos that manage to offer elegance and approachability not commonly found in these great wines. The classic Barolo is a blend of younger vines. Cicala, Colonnello, and Romirasco are all separate single vineyards. 'Granbussia' is a Riserva made in only the very best vintages. The wines are made in a traditional style, except for the use of rotofermenters, which help to extract more color and flavor.

The wines of Giacomo Conterno are some of the most traditional and long-lived in Piemonte. Roberto Conterno, Giacomo's grandson, currently makes the wine, but stylistically, little has changed over the generations. Purchased in 1974 and first bottled in 1978, Cascina Francia is the name of the 34.6 acre vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, from which only two Barolos are produced: Cascina Francia and Monfortino. The latter is a blend of the vineyard's best subplots, and is only released in outstanding vintages. Both are aged in large, old Slavonian oak casks- Cascina Francia for four years, and Monfortino for a minimum of seven. The wines can be tannic and austere when young, but given at least ten years, they consistently develop into profoundly complex, glorious examples of the brilliance Nebbiolo can achieve.

Daniele represents the fourth generation of Conterno family winemaking nobility. It all started with his great- grandfather, Pietro Conterno, then passed to his legendary grandfather, Giacomo, then on to his father, Franco who still works with Daniele in the vineyards based in the Bussia cru of Monforte.

Conterno Fantino was founded in 1982 by two friends, Guido Fantino and Claudio Conterno, whose own fathers, mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers had all earned their livelihood in the vineyard, making wine. The very high reputation they have built for themselves has never diminished the characteristic, grass-roots simplicity and sincerity that go into everything they do. The estate’s original nucleus is the cru of Ginestra: a historical one for Barolo, documented as far back as the 1800s. In 1989, Guido and Claudio acquired terrain from the nearby area of Bricco Bastia. Subsequent years continued in the same vein: cru by cru, with an aim towards expressing the individual terroirs fully and faithfully. Fabio Fantino, Guido’s son, now flanks him in crafting the wines, while daughter Elisa engages with clients. There is a future Conterno generation, too: Noemi and Matteo, still too young to do any actual work but already intrigued by the family heritage.

Chiara Boschis has some six hectares of vines under cultivation in the commune of Barolo, known for producing open, rich wines with great structure. She graduated with a degree in economics but gained experience while working with her brothers at the historical Borgogno estate. As one of few women winemakers in the Langhe, she is a force of unquestionable confidence, determination, patience and charm. She took over the reins at E. Pira e Figli in 1990 with a clear idea of what she wanted to accomplish: to marry the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability, enticing elegance, and lush, intense aromas. She achieves this goal through strict vineyard management, careful selection, and impeccable vinification techniques: shortened maceration, malolactic fermentation, and aging in barriques. Within the short time she has run the estate, she has quickly proved herself worthy of her peers, regularly garnering points well over 90 points from major international publications for all of her wines. Total annual production is a miniscule 2,000 cases.

The Palladino winery is an old building in the center of the village, surrounded by the vineyards of Serralunga d'Alba in the heart of the production of Barolo. Since 1870, wine and life have established a strong pair. The winery dates the house to 1870 and the cousins Maurilio and Mauro Palladino bought the winery in 1974 and started the wine production estate bottled in 1978, after a renovation. Maurilio’s niece Veronica is helping to carry on the tradition for the next generation of Palladino. These wines are quintessential Barolo and consistently produced at the highest quality year after year….

The Rivetti family story began in the 1890s when Giovanni Rivetti, grandfather to brothers Carlo, Bruno and Giorgio, left Piedmont for Argentina. Like many Italians at that time, he dreamed of returning as a rich and a powerful man, and perhaps even one day having the opportunity to make great wine in his homeland. Though Giovanni never did, his son, Giuseppe (nicknamed "Pin"), fulfilled the dream. Pin married Lidia, purchased vineyards, and began to make wine. In 1977 the family took up residence at LA SPINETTA (meaning "top of the hill") in Castagnole Lanze, located in the heart of the area well-known for Moscato d'Asti, a rather light and simple dessert wine at the time. The Rivettis believed, however, that Moscato had the potential for greatness and set out to prove it by producing the region's first single-vineyard Moscato wines: Bricco Quaglia and Biancospino.
In 2000 the family's ambition of adding a Barolo to the winery production became a reality. The Rivettis acquired vineyards in Grinzane Cavour where a state of the art cellar (LA SPINETTA Campè) was also constructed.

Patriarch Mario Vietti made the first Vietti wines in 1919, selling most of the production in Italy. His most significant achievement was to transform the family farm into a grape-growing and wine-producing business. Then, in 1952, Alfredo Currado (Luciana Vietti’s husband) continued to produce high quality wines from their own vineyards and purchased grapes. The Vietti winery grew to one of the top-level producers in Piemonte and was one of the first wineries to export its products to the USA market. Alfredo was one of the first to select and vinify grapes from single vineyards (such as Brunate, Rocche and Villero). This was a radical concept at the time, but today virtually every vintner making Barolo and Barbaresco wines offers “single vineyard” or “cru-designated” wines.

Until Domizio Cavazza founded the Produtori del Barbaresco in 1894, the wines of Barbaresco, despite significant differences, were all sold as Barolo. Although roughly one third the size of Barolo, Barbaresco wine styles vary widely between vineyards and producers. The wines of Barbaresco are generally regarded as being a shade softer and less powerful than those of Barolo, and require only two years of oak aging to Barolo's three. It is important to note the difference between traditional and modern producers in both Barbaresco and Barolo. Traditionalists employ longer fermentations, and age their wines in very large, old casks. Modernists prefer short fermentations, small French barriques, and use technology to extract more flavor. While these styles are quite different, both create wonderfully distinct wines of great character and depth.

Gaja makes three single-vineyard wines, each with unique characteristics. Sorì San Lorenzo, in the Secondine vineyard, was first released in 1967, and is known to be the most austere and powerful of the cru wines. 1970 marked the first vintage of Sorì Tildin, Gaja's plot in the Roncagliette cru, which combines great structure and finesse. Costa Russi, contiguous to Sorì Tildin, is the most round and elegant of the cru wines. Starting in 1996 all his single-vineyard Barbarescos are blended with 5-8% Barbera in order to strengthen the overall acidity of the wines. Doing this prevents the wines from bearing the "Barbaresco" designation, as they are required by law to be 100% Nebbiolo. However, his daughter Gaia who has worked alongside him for many years now has decided that they will return to 100% Nebbiolo as of the 2013 vintage. Gaja also makes a Cabernet Sauvignon called Darmagi, which means 'what a shame.' These words were uttered by Angelo's father when he ripped up old Nebbiolo vines to plant the Cabernet.

The Rivetti family story began in the 1890s when Giovanni Rivetti, grandfather to brothers Carlo, Bruno and Giorgio, left Piedmont for Argentina. Like many Italians at that time, he dreamed of returning rich and a powerful man, and perhaps even one day having the opportunity to make a great wine in his homeland. The Rivetti's believed, however, that Moscato had the potential for greatness and set out to prove it by producing the region's first single-vineyard Moscato wines, Bricco Quaglia and Biancospino. Over time, the family's vision became even grander, and in 1985 LA SPINETTA made its first red wine, Barbera Cà di Pian, with many great reds to follow. The first Barbaresco, Gallina, was produced in 1995 followed by Barbarescos Starderi, Barbera d'Alba Gallina in 1996 and and Barbaresco Valeirano in 1997. Barbera d'Asti Superiore entered the lineup in 1998.

Fattoria di Rodáno is located in the heart of Chianti Classico in the famed region of Castellina in Chianti. The original farm dates back to the Middle Ages. Its pristine vineyards spread over 100 hectares located at 200-300 meters above sea level. It is the perfect location to create classic, soulful Chianti Classico. The estate has been in the Pozzesi family since the 1950’s. Vittorio Pozzesi (President emeritus of the Chianti Classico Consortium) and his son Enrico manage the winery, advised by winemaker Giulio Gambelli.

The Fuligni Viscounts, a long-standing Venetian family, moved to England in the 14th century at the head of a troop of mercenaries at the service of Edward III. With the succession of the Absburg- Lorraine to the Grand Duchy, Luigi Fuligni was transferred to Tuscany as general of the new sovereignty and, around 1770, received an extensive concession of land in the Maremma from the Grand Duke, Pietro Leopoldo. Fuligni’s task was to see to the reclamation of the land as was the wish of the enlightened monarch. Giovanni Maria Fuligni settled in Montalcino at the beginning of 1900 and started to produce wine just as his family had previously done predominantly in the area around Scansano in the Maremma. The Fuligni Estate in Montalcino, directed by Maria Flora Fuligni consists of approximately 100 hectares of land at varying exposures to the sun. The vines, which extend over about ten hectares, are situated on the eastern part of the hill, a traditional area for Brunello. The cellars are located at Cottimelli (about three kilometers from Montalcino in the direction of Siena) in an original 18th century residence once the home of Medicean Grand Dukes.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was established by Marchese Lodovico Antinori of the Antinori family, behind one of Italy's most historic negociant firms, with the help of winemaker Tibor Gál. Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia is located on the Tuscan Coast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the section of the Northern Maremma between Livorno and the island of Elba. The vineyards extend over two adjacent areas that are separated by Bolgheri's famed Cypress Avenue. There are 99 hectares of vineyards in all, 41 surrounding the Tenuta, and the remaining 58 in an area known as Bellaria, which is closer to the sea. The vineyards are planted at altitudes ranging from 50 to 120 meters above sea level, on slopes ranging from 5 to 20°.
The vineyards of the estate were planted in 1981, producing the first vintage in 1985. A modern winery was built in 1987, and a second 56-hectare (140-acre) property was later added, Bellaria, situated north of Bolgheri. The property is adjacent to Tenuta San Guido, producer of Sassicaia which is considered the seminal "Super Tuscan", and Ornellaia has been suggested to be Lodovico Antinori's competitive answer to his cousin Nicolò Incisa's Sassicaia, and his older brother Piero Antinori's Solaia.

In the 1920s the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamt of creating a ‘thoroughbred’ wine and for him, as for all the aristocracy of the time, the ideal was Bordeaux. This is how he described it in a letter to the esteemed wine critic, Luigi Veronelli dated 11 June 1974: “…the origins of my experiment date back to the years between 1921 and 1925 when, as a student in Pisa and often a guest of the Salviati Dukes in Migliarino, I drank a wine produced from one of their vineyards…which had the same unmistakable “bouquet” as an aged Bordeaux….” In the 1940s, having settled with his wife Clarice on the Tenuta San Guido on the Tyrrhenian coast, he experimented with several French grape varieties (whose cuttings he had recovered from the estate of the Dukes Salviati in Migliarino) and concluded that the Cabernet had "the bouquet I was looking for." A wine made mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon was a fundamental change to the Tuscan and Piedmont tradition of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, respectively. The innovative decision to plant this variety at Tenuta San Guido was partly due to the similarity Mario Incisa had noted between Tuscan terrain and that of Graves in Bordeaux.
