V, 6 Istenic 22/7/09 10:41 Página 855 THE EARLY ROMAN MILITARY ROUTE ALONG THE RIVER LJUBLJANICA (SLOVENIA) JANKA ISTENICˇ The River Ljubljanica in central Slovenia is a typical Karst river. It is just 38 km long, and flows from approximately south-west to north-east (Figs. 1 & 2) (Bitenc & Knific, 1997: figs. 1, 2; Isteniˇc, 2001: fig. 4). Its vigorous sources, typical of a Karst stream, rise on the western outskirts of Ljubljansko barje, just below the steep slopes of the Karst margin. From Vrhnika, less than 2 km from its sources, the Ljubljanica is already navigable, and in the approximately 20 km to Ljubljana, it flows through Ljubljansko barje (the Ljubljana Moors), a plain with several isolated low hills. Until drainage-work which began in the 18th century, this area was very marshy and difficult to cross. Even now, the central part of the Ljubljansko barje is subject to annual flooding. On its course through this region, the river is relatively narrow (up to c. 30 m wide) and slow-flowing, with steep banks and a deep bed (at low water level, 3,8 to 7,6 m; Sbrizaj 1903: 13) of silt, over clay sediments. At Ljubljana, it leaves the region of Ljubljansko barje, and flows over a gravel floor until it joins the River Sava. From the prehistoric period until the advent of the railway in the nineteenth century, there was busy traffic along the River Ljubljanica. In the prehistoric period, this river was a part of the “Amber route” from the northern Adriatic to the Baltic and an important stage in the so-called “Argonauts route” from the Black Sea to the Adriatic 1. -

Reviewing the evidence for environmental change and population history in the eastern Adriatic and western Balkans during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene Authors Suzanne E. Pilaar Birch, [email protected] Abstract The eastern Adriatic and western Balkans are key areas for assessing the environmental and population history of Europe during the Late Pleistocene and early Holocene. It has been argued that the Balkan region served as a Late Glacial refugium for humans, animals, and plants, much like Iberia and the Italian Peninsula and in contrast to the harsh conditions of Eastern and Central Europe. As post-glacial amelioration occurred and sea level rose, these regions to the north and west of the Balkan Mountains became forested and were populated by Mesolithic forager-fishers. Meanwhile, to the south, the domestication of plants and animals in the Near East began to cause large-scale environmental as well as lifestyle changes. Even as the Balkan Peninsula was a likely crossroads on the route for the spread of agriculture and herding from Southwest Asia into Europe, issues such as pre-Neolithic settlement, the discussion of human-environment interactions, and the role of climate events such as the 11.4, 9.3, and 8.2 ka cal BP in this critical landscape are often overlooked. -

Oleson, Department of Greek and Roman Studies Supervisor Dr. Gregory D. Rowe, Department of Greek and Roman Studies Departmental Member During the last stages of the Marcommani Wars in the late second century A.D., Roman literary sources recorded that the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius was planning to annex the Germanic territory of the Marcomannic and Quadic tribes. This work will propose that Marcus Aurelius was going to create a province called Marcomannia. The thesis will be supported by archaeological data originating from excavations in the Roman installation at Mušov, Moravia, Czech Republic. The investigation will examine the history of the non-Roman region beyond the northern Danubian frontier, the character of Roman occupation and creation of other Roman provinces on the Danube, and consult primary sources and modern research on the topic of Roman expansion and empire building during the principate. iv Table of Contents Supervisory Committee ..................................................................................................... -

Apsorus is located at the isthmus connecting Cres and Lošinj islands, which is 90 m wide at the narrowest part and dissected by a canal of supposed Roman age. A conspicuous low-lying wetland north of the city has been suggested to be a former sea passage and harbour area. -

Public transport in the Ljubljana Urban Region 1 Contents Address of Zoran Janković, President of the Council of the Ljubljana Urban Region and Mayor of Ljubljana 9Mayors of the Ljubljana Urban Region on public transport Lilijana Madjar: Yes, it is time for sustainable mobility in the Ljubljana Urban Region 15 Interview with Stephen Atkins by Jurij Kobal – Public transport is a key component 21 in the self-esteem of every European capital Views of the members of the select project group on public transport 25 Omega consult d. o. o.: ‘Expert guidelines for the regulation of regional public transport’ (a summary) 41117 Priority projects of the Ljubljana Urban Region 2 Zoran Janković Address of the president of the Council of the Ljubljana Urban Region and Mayor of the Municipality of Ljubljana Transport significantly contributes to contemporary development, as it overcomes distances and connects people. Apart from its indispensable role in everyday life, its long-term impact on society and the environment increasingly calls for attention. Functional, quality and professional transport management determines the development path both of the region and the State. Hence the project ‘Expert guidelines for the regulation of regional public transport’ is an excellent foundation for the regulation and establishment of quality public passenger transport on the principles of sustainable mobility by 2027. At the Municipality of Ljubljana we have set out a long-term programme for public transport and designed activities needed for its implementation. What are the most important projects through which we wish to achieve greater efficiency and safety in public transport, and the use of alternative fuels, as well as encourage cycling and walking? · By closing the city centre to traffic, newly re-designed public spaces such as Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg) and the Three Bridges (Tromostovje), Ciril-Metod Square (Ciril Metodov trg), Breg, Krakovo Embankment (Krakovski nasip), Špica and Trnovo Quay (Trnovski pristan) are intended for pedestrians and cyclists. -

Norris (Rhodophyta, Ceramiales) is an invasive macrophyte in the Mediterranean Sea, first recorded from the coast of Italy in 1986. This is a review of the geographic distribution and depth limits of W. setacea invasion in the Adriatic Sea since its first record in 1997. Algal turfs were collected and examined from different locations in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea from 2005 to 2009 by SCUBA diving and grab sampling. A total of 50 sites invaded by W. setacea were recorded in the Adriatic Sea; 40 new sites in this research and 10 from the literature records. Womersleyella setacea was recorded from 7 to 72 meters depth. Only sterile specimens without any reproductive structures were found. The magnitude of the invasion is discussed.
