  • Lolita Fashion, Like Other Japanese Subcultures, Developed As a Response a to Social Pressures and Anxieties Felt by Young Women and Men in the 1970S and 1980S
Lolita: Dreaming, Despairing, Defying Lolita: D, D, D J New York University a p As it exists in Japan, Lolita Fashion, like other Japanese subcultures, developed as a response a to social pressures and anxieties felt by young women and men in the 1970s and 1980s. Rather than dealing with the difficult reality of rapid commercialization, destabilization of society, n a rigid social system, and an increasingly body-focused fashion norm, a select group of youth chose to find comfort in the over-the-top imaginary world of lace, frills, bows, tulle, and ribbons that is Lolita Fashion. However, the more gothic elements of the style reflect that behind this cute façade lurks the dark, sinister knowledge that this ploy will inevitably end, the real world unchanged. Klaha did not show up to the performance, so Közi sang while playing guitar. "Beast of Blood" was one of the songs played. • TRANSCULTURAL SPACES in SUBCULTURE: an Examination of Multicultural Dynamics in the Japanese Visual Kei Movement
TRANSCULTURAL SPACES IN SUBCULTURE: An examination of multicultural dynamics in the Japanese visual kei movement Hayley Maxime Bhola 5615A031-9 January 10, 2017 A master’s thesis submitted to the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies Waseda University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts TRANSCULTURAL SPACES IN SUBCULTURE 2 Abstract of the Dissertation The purpose of this dissertation was to examine Japanese visual kei subculture through the theoretical lens of transculturation. Visual kei (ヴィジュアル系) is a music based subculture that formed in the late 1980’s in Japan with bands like X Japan, COLOR and Glay. Bands are recognized by their flamboyant (often androgynous appearances) as well as their theatrical per- formances. Transculturation is a term originally coined by ethnographer Fernando Ortiz in re- sponse to the cultural exchange that took place during the era of colonization in Cuba. It de- scribes the process of cultural exchange in a way that implies mutual action and a more even dis- tribution of power and control over the process itself. This thesis looked at transculturation as it relates to visual kei in two main parts. The first was expositional: looking at visual kei and the musicians that fall under the genre as a product of transculturation between Japanese and non- Japanese culture. The second part was an effort to label visual kei as a transcultural space that is able to continue the process of transculturation by fostering cultural exchange and development among members within the subculture in Japan. Chapter 1 gave a brief overview of the thesis and explains the motivation behind conduct- ing the research.

  • An Unusual Hansel and Gretel by Minako Tomoka a Malice Mizer Short Story Mana and Klaha Wandered Through the Forest, Utterly
An Unusual Hansel and Gretel By Minako Tomoka A Malice Mizer Short Story Mana and Klaha wandered through the forest, utterly lost in the sea of trees. They seemed to be walking around in circles, having strayed far off the path they originally entered from. Klaha, a nobleman, normally would never be caught dead tromping through the woods, but his effeminate boyfriend Mana insisted that they went out into the forest to pick blackberries for a pie he planned to bake. Despite his frail appearance, in his billowy black dress and thigh-high stockings, Mana was a man of very few words- in fact, Klaha had only heard him speak on a few rare occasions the whole time they had been together. He was also quite assertive when he wanted something, which was why they were currently wandering around in the woods, completely lost. Sunlight was growing dim, and night would soon fall. If they didn't find their way home soon, they could be left clambering around in the dark, or even worse, forced to spend the night in the cold forest with the wolves and bears, neither of which was an appealing prospect. "If you had just listened to me and stayed on the path, we wouldn't be in this situation right now," Klaha complained. His elegant, expensive black clothes had been torn up by brambles and thorns. The wilderness didn't suit an aristocrat like him. Mana said nothing, as to be expected, and instead led Klaha out into a clearing where a small house stood.

The ones of the capital, Santiago de Chile, were of the most interest due to their size and were categorized as urban tribes. Among them, one stood out due to its members' outrageous hairstyles, dark makeup and clothing, androgyny, and the language of the music to which they listened: visuals, the name given to Chilean fans of the Japanese music genre visual kei.

  • Jfl Learners in the U.S.: Identity, Japanese Popular
JFL LEARNERS IN THE U.S.: IDENTITY, JAPANESE POPULAR CULTURE, AND LANGUAGE LEARNING by NATSUKI FUKUNAGA ANDERSON (Under the Direction of Betsy Rymes) ABSTRACT This is a qualitative study of a small subset of Japanese as a Foreign Language (JFL) students who are interested in Japanese popular culture and language, focusing on language-in- use. The purpose of this study is to understand the multiple ways contemporary Japanese culture is experienced by JFL college students who are also secret fans of anime and Japanese popular culture. In particular, this study is interested in the critical aspect of the relationship between JFL learners’ experiences and its impact on their individual identities in everyday life. Informed by discourse and identity theories, this study will investigate aspects of contemporary Japanese popular culture that JFL students are attracted to and engaged in, and explore Japanese learners’ social identities through multiple media and in different contexts: 1) photographs taken by participants, 2) individual photo-elicited interviews, and 3) a series of group discussions of Japanese popular culture texts. The central questions guiding the study are as follows: 1) How do JFL students narrate their identities as Japanese popular culture fans in diverse social situations? 2) How do JFL students narrate their critical stance on both Japanese and U.S. societies? By understanding how learners of Japanese construct their own identities using individual agency, and how the process is mediated by both Japanese language and popular culture texts, this study will contribute to new and dynamic understandings of Japanese culture and JFL learning as experienced by Japanese learners in the U.S.

ISSN 2029-2074 JAPANESE POPULAR CULTURE IN LATVIA: LOLITA AND MORI FASHION Agnese Haijima University of Latvia Keywords: cultural exchange in the global era, Lolita, Mori fashion, Japanese popular culture in Europe, kawaii culture. Pagrindinės sąvokos: kultūriniai mainai globalioje eroje, Lolita, Mori mada, japonų populiari- oji kultūra Europoje, kawaii kultūra.
